CAUTION
Objects such as chains, thin and glossy poles or low obstacles may end up in the "signalshadow" and then go temporarily undetectedby the sensors – the pulsating tone may thenunexpectedly stop instead of becoming aconstant tone as expected. The sensors cannot detect high objects, such as protruding ramps.
• In such situations, pay extra attention andmaneuver/drive the vehicle very slowly orstop the current parking maneuver –there may be a high risk of damage tothe vehicle or other objects since infor-mation from the sensors is not alwaysreliable in such situations.
CAUTION
In some circumstances, the Park Assist Sys- tem may produce false warnings due to exter-nal sound sources with the same ultrasonicfrequencies as those the system works with. Examples of such sources are horns, wet tires on asphalt, pneumatic brakes, exhaust noisefrom motorcycles, etc.
NOTE
When a trailer hitch is configured with the vehicle electrical system, the trailer hitch pro-trusion is included when the function meas-ures the distance to objects behind the vehi-cle.

Park Assist Camera *
The Park Assist Camera can help provide the driver when maneuvering in tight spaces by alert-ing the driver to obstacles using the camerascreen and graphics in the center display.
The Park Assist Camera is a support function that is automatically activated when reverse gearis engaged. It can also be started manually fromthe center display.

Recommended maintenance of thePark Assist Camera
Each of the Park Assist Cameras, located above the license plate, the grille and in both door mir-rors, require a certain degree of maintenance.
Clean the camera lenses regularly using luke- warm water and car washing detergent. Washgently to avoid scratching the lens.
NOTE
Keep the camera lens free of dirt, snow and ice to help ensure the best functionality. Thisis particularly important in poor light condi-tions.

Park Assist Pilot *
Park Assist Pilot (PAP 124
) helps the driver pull
into and out of parking spaces.
PAP first checks whether there is sufficient space and then steers the car into the space. The center display uses symbols, graphics and messages to inform the driver of what steps needto be taken and when.

The PAP function measures the space and steers the vehicle – the driver's role is to:
• keep close watch of the area around thevehicle
• follow the instructions on the center dis-play
• change gears (reverse/forward) – a"ping" sound indicates when the drivershould change gears
• regulate and maintain a safe speed
• apply the brakes and stop.

Brake Assist System
The brake enhancing system, Brake Assist
System (BAS), helps increase braking force andthereby reduce braking distance.
The system monitors the driver's braking habits and increases braking force when necessary.Braking force can be increased up to the point atwhich the ABS intervenes. The function is deacti-vated when pressure on the brake pedal isdecreased.
NOTE
When BAS is activated, the brake pedal will go down slightly more than usual. Press(hold) down the brake pedal as long as nec-essary. When the brake pedal is released, all braking ceases.

Braking on wet roads
Prolonged driving in heavy rain without braking may cause braking effect to be slightly delayedthe first time the brakes are applied.
This may also occur after washing the vehicle. It will then be necessary to apply greater pressureto the brake pedal. You should therefore maintaina greater distance to the vehicle ahead. Firmly apply the brakes after washing the vehicle or driving on wet roads. This helps warm up thebrake discs, enabling them to dry more quicklyand protecting them against corrosion. Considerthe current traffic situation when braking.

Braking on salted roads When driving on salted roads, a layer of salt may form on the brake discs and brake pads.
This could increase stopping distance. Maintain an extra large safety distance to the vehicleahead. Make sure to also:
• Apply the brakes from time to time to helpremove salt. Make sure braking does notpose a risk to any other road users.
• Gently apply the brakes when you have fin-ished driving and before driving again.

Maintenance of the brake system
Regularly check the brake system components for wear.
To keep the vehicle as safe and reliable as possi- ble, follow the Volvo service schedule specified inthe Warranty and Maintenance Records Informa-tion booklet. New and replaced brake pads andbrake discs do not provide optimal braking effectuntil they are "broken in" by driving a few hun-dred kilometers (miles). Compensate for thereduced braking effect by applying greater pres-sure to the brake pedal. Volvo recommends onlyusing brake pads approved for your Volvo.
CAUTION
The brake system's components should be regularly checked for wear. Contact a workshop for advice on how to do this or let a workshop perform the inspection- an authorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.

Parking brake The parking brake helps keep the vehicle sta- tionary by mechanically locking two wheels.
The parking brake controls are located in the tunnel console between the seats.
When the electric parking brake is being applied, a faint sound can be heard from the brake's elec-tric motor. This sound can also be heard duringthe automatic function check of the parkingbrake. If the vehicle is stationary when the parking brake is applied, it will only be applied to the rearwheels. If it is applied while the vehicle is moving,the normal brakes will be used on all four wheels.Braking will be transferred to only the rearwheels when the vehicle is almost stopped.

Fuel consumption is increased at high speeds - air resistance increases with speed.
• Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle- the heavier the load, the higher the fuelconsumption.
• Maintain the correct pressure in the tires andcheck pressure regularly.
• The type of tires used could affect fuel con-sumption - consult a retailer for advice onsuitable tires.
• Do not use winter tires after the winter sea-son has ended.
• Roof loads increase air resistance andincrease fuel consumption. Remove roofboxes, ski racks, etc. that are not in use.
• Avoid driving with the windows open.
• Using the trip computer's fuel consumptionindicators can help you learn how to drivemore economically.
Other factors that decrease fuel
consumption
• Dirty air cleaner.
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter.
• Incorrect front-end alignment.
• Incorrect wheel alignment.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems and equipment checked carefully before driving longdistances.
Check that:
• the engine is running properly and that fuel consumption is normal
• there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
• the brake pedal is functioning optimally
• all lights are working

adjust the headlight
height if the vehicle is carrying a heavy load
• tire tread depth and air pressure are at cor-rect levels. Change to snow tires when driv-ing in areas where there is a risk of snowy oricy roads.
• the start battery is sufficiently charged
• the wiper blades are in good condition
