Starting the engine
The engine can be started/switched off using the remote key and the START/STOP ENGINE
button.

WARNING
Before starting the engine:
• Fasten the seat belt.
• Check that the seat, steering wheel and mirrors are adjusted properly.
• Make sure the brake pedal can bedepressed completely. Adjust the seat ifnecessary.
WARNING
•Never use more than one floor mat at a time on the driver's floor. Before driving,remove the original mat from the driver'sseat floor before using any other type offloor mat. Any mat used in this positionshould be securely and properly anchoredin the attaching pins. An extra mat on thedriver's floor can cause the acceleratorand/or brake pedal to catch. Check thatthe movement of these pedals is notimpeded.
• Volvo's floor mats are specially manufac-tured for your car. They must be firmlysecured in the clips on the floor so thatthey cannot slide and become trappedunder the pedals on the driver's side.
1. Press the remote key into the ignition slot as far as possible, with the metallic key blade pointing outward (not inserted into the slot) 1

Press and release the START/STOP
ENGINE button. The autostart function will
operate the starter motor until the engine starts or until its overheating function stopsit. The starter motor operates for a maximum of 10 seconds. If the engine has not started,repeat the procedure.
CAUTION
If the engine does not start after the third try, wait for approximately 3 minutes before tryingto start it again to give the battery time torecover its starting capacity.
NOTE
Keyless drive *
To start a vehicle equipped with the keyless drive feature, one of the remote keys must bein the passenger compartment. Follow theinstructions in steps 2 and 3 to start the vehi-cle.

Jump startingFollow these instructions to jump start your vehi- cle's dead battery or to jump start another vehi-cle's dead battery using your vehicle.

Connecting the jumper cables
If the 12-volt auxiliary battery to be used is in another vehicle, check that the vehicles are nottouching to prevent premature completion of acircuit. Be sure to follow jump starting instruc-tions provided for the other vehicle. To jump start your vehicle:
1. Switch off the ignition (set the ignition to mode 0, see Ignition modes (p. 82)).
2. First connect the red jumper cable to the auxiliary battery's positive (+) terminal (1). 3. Fold back the cover over the positive (+) ter-
minal on your vehicle's battery (2), marked with a "+" sign, located under a folding cover.
4. Connect the black jumper cable to the auxili- ary battery's negative (–) terminal (3) and tothe ground point in your vehicle's enginecompartment (right engine mount at the top,on the outer screw) (4).
5. Start the engine in the assisting vehicle, then start the engine in the vehicle with dead bat-tery.
6. After the engine has started, first remove the negative (–) terminal jumper cable (black).Then remove the positive (+) terminal jumpercable (red).WARNING

CAUTION
Connect the jumper cables carefully to avoid short circuits with other components in theengine compartment.
WARNING
• Do not connect the jumper cable to any part of the fuel system or to any movingparts. Avoid touching hot manifolds.
• Batteries generate hydrogen gas, whichis flammable and explosive.
• Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do notallow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin,fabrics or painted surfaces. If contactoccurs, flush the affected area immedi-ately with water. Obtain medical helpimmediately if eyes are affected.
• Never expose the battery to open flameor electric spark.
• Do not smoke near the battery.
• Failure to follow the instructions for jumpstarting can lead to injury.

Transmission – Geartronic
Geartronic allows you to manually shift among your vehicle's forward gears. The manual posi-tion ( +S–) can be selected at any time.
Geartronic: manual shifting (+S–)To shift gears manually, move the gear selector to the side from D toward

panel will change from white to
orange and the number of the gear currently
being used (
1, 2, 3, etc.) will be displayed (see

This option indicates when to shift up or down to help conserve fuel. A white arrow will appearabove or below the number of the current gear toprompt the driver to shift up or down.
While driving
•
If you select the manual shifting position while driving, the gear that was being used inthe Drive position will also initially beselected in the manual shifting position.
• Move the gear selector forward (toward
+) to
shift to a higher gear or rearward (toward –)
to shift to a lower gear.
• If you hold the gear selector toward "
–", the
transmission will downshift one gear at atime and will utilize the braking power of the engine. If the current speed is too high forusing a lower gear, the downshift will notoccur until the speed has decreased enoughto allow the lower gear to be used.
• If you slow to a very low speed, the transmis-sion will automatically shift down.
Shiftlock: Neutral (N)
If the gear selector is in the
N position and the
vehicle has been stationary for at least 3 seconds (irrespective of whether the engine is running)then the gear selector is locked. In order to move the gear selector from N to
another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition must be in at least position II, see Ignition modes (p. 82).

Geartronic: Sport mode ( S)7
This transmission mode provides sportier shifting characteristics and enables a more active drivingstyle by making it possible to drive at higher rpmin each gear before shifting up. The engine alsoresponds faster when the accelerator pedal ispressed. To access Sport mode from Drive (
D), move the
gear selector to the left. The transmission will not switch to manual shifting mode until the gearselector is moved forward or rearward toward +or –. Sport mode can be selected any time.
NOTE
• On vehicles equipped with Sport mode, the transmission symbol in the main instrument panel will change from
D to S
when the gear selector is moved to the manual shifting mode. If the gear selectoris moved toward "+" or "-", the number ofthe gear currently being used will be dis-played, see Information displays – intro-duction (p. 71).
• Please be aware that using Sport modemay result in a slight decrease in fuel economy. Driving in
D can help improve
fuel economy.

Start/Stop – Auto-stop exceptions
In certain situations or conditions, the engine may not auto-stop when the vehicle comes to a
standstill, such as if:
Condition/situation The vehicle's speed has not reached a speed of approx. 6 mph (10 km/h) after the mostrecent auto-start or after the driver has startedthe engine. The driver unbuckles his/her seat belt.The main battery's charge is below the mini- mum level. The engine has not reached its normal operat- ing temperature. The ambient temperature is below approx. 25°F (-4°C) or above approx. 85°F (30°C). The windshield's heating function * is activated.
The climate system cannot keep the desired settings in the passenger compartment; theblower will operate at high speed. The vehicle is backing up.The main battery's temperature is below freez- ing or too high. The driver is turning the steering wheel hard.
Condition/situation The road's incline is very steep. A trailer's electrical system is connected to the vehicle. The hood has been opened A

The transmission has not reached its normal operating temperature. Atmospheric pressure is below a level equiva- lent to an altitude of approx. 4,900–8,200 ft
(1500–2500 m) above sea level. The actualpressure is also affected by current weatherconditions. The Adaptive Cruise Control's * Queue Assist
feature is activated. The gear selector is in the SB

ECO*
Eco is a function 10
developed by Volvo to give
the driver the opportunity to actively drive more economically and to help reduce fuel consump-tion.
IntroductionWhen Eco is activated, the fol- lowing functions are modified:
• The automatic transmission's shifting points
• The engine management system and accel- erator pedal response
• Stop/stop function (Start/Stop – introduction(p. 268)): the engine can auto-stop beforethe vehicle has come to a full stop
• Eco Coast functionality is activated: enginebraking is disabled
• Climate system settings: certain functions(e.g., air conditioning) will be temporarilyreduced or deactivated
NOTE
When Eco is activated, several climate system parameters are changed and the function ofcertain current-consuming systems will bereduced. Some of these functions can be restarted manually but full functionality will not berestored until Eco is deactivated.

When the engine is switched off, ECO is deacti- vated and must be reactivated each time theengine is started (with the exception of certainengines). The
ECO symbol will be displayed in the instru-
ment panel and the indicator light in the ECO
button will be on when Eco is activated.
Eco on or offWhen ECO is deactivated, theECO symbol will not be dis-
played in the instrument panel and the indicator light in the ECO button will be off. The
function will remain deactivated until the button is pressedagain.
Eco CoastEco Coast is an integral part of the Eco function and essentially deactivates engine braking, allow-ing the vehicle to roll freely.
NOTE
To function optimally, Eco Coast should pri- marily be used when the vehicle can coast asfar as possible.
When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the transmission is automatically disengagedfrom the engine and engine rpm will be reducedto the idle level (approx. 700-800 rpm), whichhelps reduce fuel consumption.

Heated oxygen sensorsThe heated oxygen sensors monitor the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. Readings are fedinto a control module that continuously monitorsengine functions and controls fuel injection. Theratio of fuel to air into the engine is continuouslyadjusted for efficient combustion to help reduceharmful emissions.

Economical driving
Better driving economy may be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid starts and stopsand adjusting the speed of your vehicle to imme-diate traffic conditions.
Economical driving conserves natural
resources
Observe the following rules: • Bring the engine to normal operating tem- perature as soon as possible by driving witha light foot on the accelerator pedal for thefirst few minutes of operation. A cold engineuses more fuel and is subject to increasedwear.
• Whenever possible, avoid using the vehiclefor driving short distances. This does notallow the engine to reach normal operatingtemperature.
• Drive carefully and avoid rapid accelerationand hard braking.
• Use the transmission's Drive (
D) position as
often as possible and avoid using kick-down.
• Using the engine's optional Eco function canhelp improve fuel economy. For additional information, see ECO
* (p. 273).
• Using the transmission's Sport mode may increase fuel consumption somewhat. Use the transmission's Drive (
D) position as often
as possible. For additional information about Sport mode, see Transmission – Geartronic (p. 265).
• Do not exceed posted speed limits.
• Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extra load)in the vehicle.
• Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tirepressure regularly (when tires are cold).
• Remove snow tires when threat of snow orice has ended.
• Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc, increaseair resistance and also fuel consumption.
• At highway driving speeds, fuel consumptionwill be lower with the air conditioning on andthe windows closed than with the air condi-tioning off and the windows open.
• Using the onboard trip computer's fuel con-sumption modes can help you learn how todrive more economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are:
• Dirty air cleaner
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
• Dragging brakes
• Incorrect front end alignment
Some of the above mentioned items and othersare checked at the standard maintenance inter-vals.

WARNING
Driving with the tailgate open: Driving with
the tailgate open could lead to poisonous exhaust gases entering the passenger com-partment. If the tailgate must be kept open forany reason, proceed as follows:
• Close the windows
• Set the ventilation system control to air flow to floor, windshield and side windowsand the blower control to its highest set-ting.
Handling and roadholdingAt the specified curb weight your vehicle has atendency to understeer, which means that thesteering wheel has to be turned more than mightseem appropriate for the curvature of a bend.This ensures good stability and reduces the riskof rear wheel skid. Remember that these proper-ties can alter with the vehicle load. The heavierthe load in the cargo area, the less the tendencyto understeer.
• Vehicle load, tire design and inflation pres-sure all affect vehicle handling. Therefore,check that the tires are inflated to the rec-ommended pressure according to the vehicleload. Loads should be distributed so thatcapacity weight or maximum permissible axleloads are not exceeded.
• At the specified curb weight your vehicle hasa tendency to understeer, which means that the steering wheel has to be turned morethan might seem appropriate for the curva-ture of a bend. This ensures good stabilityand reduces the risk of rear wheel skid.Remember that these properties can alterwith the vehicle load. The heavier the load inthe cargo compartment, the less the ten-dency to understeer.

Towing a trailer When towing a trailer, always observe the legal requirements of the state/province.
NOTE
For the maximum trailer and tongue weights recommended by Volvo, see Weights (p. 381)
• All Volvo models are equipped with energy- absorbing shock-mounted bumpers. Trailerhitch installation should not interfere with theproper operation of this bumper system.
Trailer towing does not normally present any par-ticular problems, but take into consideration:
• Increase tire pressure to recommended fullpressure, see the tire inflation decal on thedriver's door opening.
• When your vehicle is new, avoid towing heavytrailers during the first 620 miles (1,000 km).
• Maximum speed when towing a trailer:50 mph (80 km/h).
• Engine and transmission are subject toincreased loads. Therefore, engine coolanttemperature should be closely watched whendriving in hot climates or hilly terrain. Use alower gear and turn off the air conditioner ifthe temperature gauge needle enters the redrange.
