When trouble arises

●Stop the vehicle in a safe pl ace on a hard, flat surface.
● Set the parking brake.
● Shift the shift lever to P (continu ously variable transmission) or R
(manual transmission).
● Stop the engine.
● Turn on the emergency flashers. ( →P. 282)
If you have a flat tire
Your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. The flat tire can be
replaced with the spare tire.

WARNING
■If you have a flat tire
Do not continue driving with a flat tire.
Driving even a short dist ance with a flat tire can damage the tire and the
wheel beyond repair, which could result in an accident.

When trouble arises

Stop the engine. Shift the shift lever to P (continuously variable
transmission) or N (manual transmission), and set the parking
brake.
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the front wheels.
Place wood, stones or some othe r material under the front wheels
to help provide traction.
Restart the engine.
Shift the shift lever to D or R (cont inuously variable transmission) or
1 or R (manual transmission) and release the parking brake. Then,
while exercising caution, depress the accelerator pedal.
■ When it is difficult to free the vehicle
If the vehicle becomes stuck
Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:

formance.
● Your Toyota vehicle is filled with “TOYOTA Genuine Manual Transmission
Gear Oil LV GL-4 75W” at the factory. Use Toyota approved “TOYOTA
Genuine Manual Transmission Gear Oil LV GL-4 75W” or an equivalent oil
of matching quality that satisfies the above specifications. Please contact
your Toyota dealer for further details.

Do you turn the key with the clutch pedal depressed firmly?

●Vehicles with a continuously variable transmission:
Is the shift lever in P? ( →P. 128)
●Is the steering wheel unlocked? ( →P. 129)
●Is the battery discharged? (→P. 315)
●Is the engine switch in the “ON” position?
If you cannot release the shift lever by depressing the brake pedal with the
engine switch in the “ON” position. ( →P. 135)
●It is locked to prevent theft of the vehicle if the key is pulled from the engine
switch. (→P. 128)
●Is the window lock switch pressed?
The power window except for the one at the driver’s seat cannot be oper-
ated if the window lock switch is pressed. ( →P. 106)
If you think something is wrong
The engine does not start
The shift lever cannot be shifted from P even if you depress
the brake pedal (vehicles with a continuously variable trans-
mission)
The steering wheel cannot be turned after the engine is
stopped
The windows do not open or close by operating the power
window switches
