Driving
COROLLA iM_U (OM12M42U)
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
■When driving the vehicle
● Do not drive if you are unfamiliar with the location of the brake and ac\
cel-
erator pedals to avoid depressing the wrong pedal.
• Accidentally depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake
pedal will result in sudden acceleration that may lead to an accident.
• When backing up, you may twist your body around, leading to a diffi- culty in operating the pedals. Make sure to operate the pedals properly.
• Make sure to keep a correct driving posture even when moving the
vehicle only slightly. This allows you to depress the brake and accelera-
tor pedals properly.
• Depress the brake pedal using your right foot. Depressing the brake
pedal using your left foot may delay response in an emergency, result-
ing in an accident.
● Do not drive the vehicle over or stop the vehicle near flammable materials.
The exhaust system and exhaust gases can be extremely hot. These hot
parts may cause a fire if there is any flammable material nearby.
● During normal driving, do not turn off the engine. Turning the engine off
while driving will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the
power assist to these systems will be lost. This will make it more difficult to
steer and brake, so you should pull over and stop the vehicle as soon as it
is safe to do so.
However, in the event of an emergency, such as if it becomes impossible
to stop the vehicle in the normal way: →P. 283
● Use engine braking (downshift) to maintain a safe speed when driving
down a steep hill.
Using the brakes continuously may cause the brakes to overheat and lose
effectiveness. ( →P. 131, 137)
● Do not adjust the display, the positions of the steering wheel, the seat, or
the inside or outside rear view mirrors while driving.
Doing so may result in a loss of vehicle control.
● Always check that all passengers’ arms, heads or other parts of their body
are not outside the vehicle.
● Do not drive in excess of the speed limit. Even if the legal speed limit per-
mits it, do not drive over 85 mph (140 km/h) unless your vehicle has h\
igh-
speed capability tires. Driving over 85 mph (140 km/h) may result in tire
failure, loss of control and possible injury. Be sure to consult a tire dealer
to determine whether the tires on your vehicle are high-speed capability
tires or not before driving at such speeds.

To enter 7-speed sport sequential shiftmatic mode, shift the shift lever
to M. Gear steps can then be selected by operating the shift lever,
allowing you to drive in the gear step of your choosing.
Upshifting
Downshifting
The gear changes once every time
the shift lever is operated.
The selected gear step, from M1 to
M7, will be displayed in the meter.
However, even when in the M position, the gear steps will be auto-
matically changed if the engine s peed is too high, or too low.
■Gear step functions
●You can choose from 7 levels of engine braking force.
● A lower gear step will provide greater engine braking force than a higher
gear step, and the engine speed will also increase.
■ If the 7-speed sport sequential shif tmatic mode indicator does not come
on even after shifting the shift lever to M
This may indicate a malfunction in the continuously variable transmission
system. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.
(In this situation, the transmission will operate in the same manner as when
the shift lever is in D.)
■ When the vehicle comes to a stop with the shift lever in the M position
● The transmission will automatically downshift to M1 once the vehicle is
stopped.
● After a stop, the vehicle will start off in M1.
● When the vehicle is stopped, the transmission is set at M1.

■Before driving
Fully release the parking brake.
Driving the vehicle with the parking brake set will lead to brake components
overheating, which may affect braking performance and increase brake
wear.

◆Pre-collision warning
When the system determines
that the possibility of a frontal
collision is high, a buzzer will
sound and a warning message
will be displayed on the multi-
information display to urge the
driver to take evasive action.
◆Pre-collision brake assist
When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal colli-
sion with a vehicle is high, the system applies greater braking force
in relation to how strongly the brake pedal is depressed.
◆Pre-collision braking
When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal colli-
sion with a vehicle is high, the sy stem warns the driver. If the sys-
tem determines that the possibility of a collision is extremely high,
the brakes are automatically appli ed to help avoid the collision or
reduce the collision speed.
PCS (Pre-Collision System)∗
∗: If equipped
The pre-collision system uses the front sensor to detect vehi-
cles in front of your vehicle. When the system determines that
the possibility of a frontal collisi on with a vehicle is high, a warn-
ing operates to urge the driver to take evasive action and the
potential brake pressure is increased to help the driver avoid the
collision. If the system determin es that the possibility of a fron-
tal collision with a vehicle is extremely high, the brakes are auto-
matically applied to help avoid the collision or help reduce the
impact of the collision.
The pre-collision system can be disabled/enabled and the warning
timing can be changed. ( →P. 162)

Enabling/disabling th
e pre-collision system
Press the PCS switch for 3 sec-
onds or more.
The PCS warning light will turn
on and a message will be dis-
played in the multi-information
display, when the system is
turned off.
To enable the system, press the
PCS switch again.
The pre-collision system is
enabled each time the engine is
started.
■
Changing the pre-colli sion warning timing
Press the PCS switch to display the current warning timing in the
multi-information display. Each ti me the PCS switch is pressed in
the displayed state, the timing fo r the warning changes as follows:
If the operation timing setting has been changed, the setting will be
retained the next time the engine is started.
Far
The warning will begin to oper-
ate earlier than with the default
timing.
Middle
This is the default setting.
Near
The warning will begin to oper-
ate later than with the default
timing.

If the PCS warning light flashes or illuminates and a warning message is
displayed on the mult i-information display
The pre-collision system may be tem porarily unavailable or there may be a
malfunction in the system.
● In the following situations, the warning light will turn off, the message will
disappear and the system will become operational when normal operating
conditions return:
• When the area around the front sensor is hot, such as in the sun
• When the windshield is fogged up or covered with condensation or ice
(→ P. 199)
• When driving in conditions where the front sensor cannot detect an object, such as in the dark (at night on a road without street lights or other
lights, etc.), when bright light is shining into the sensor, or in snow or fog.
• When the front sensor or the area around either sensor is cold, such as in an extremely cold environment
• If the area in front of the front sensor is obstructed, such as when the hood is open
● If the PCS warning light continues to flash or illuminate or the warning mes-
sage does not disappear, the system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehi-
cle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.
■ If VSC is disabled
●If TRAC and VSC are disabled ( →P. 188), the pre-collision brake assist and
pre-collision braking functions are also disabled. However, the pre-collision
warning function will still operate.
● The PCS warning light illuminates and “VSC Turned Off Pre-Collision Brake
System Unavailable” is displayed on the multi-information display.

When driving on roads with white (yello w) lines, this function alerts the
driver when the vehicle might depart from its lane.
The LDA system recognizes visi-
ble white (yellow) lines with the
front sensor on the upper portion
of the front windshield.
When the system determines that
the vehicle might depart from its
lane, a warning is displayed on
the multi-information display and
the warning buzzer sounds to
alert the driver.
When the warning buzzer sounds,
check the surrounding road situa-
tion and carefully operate the
steering wheel to move the vehicle
back to the center within the white
(yellow) lines.
