The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are designed to deploy when the vehicle suffers a moderate to severe fr
ontal impact. A typical
condition is shown in the illustration to the left. The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are designed to deploy only in certain moderateto severe frontal collisions within the shaded area between the arrows in the illustration to the right.
The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag will deploy if the impact to the vehicle’s main structure is above a sp
ecific threshold level.
The threshold level is approximately 15 mph (25 km/h) for a frontal co
llision straight into a
solid flat wall that does not bend or deform. Ifthe impact to the vehicle’s main structure is below this threshold level, the front airbags and driver’s knee airbag may not deploy. Thisthreshold level may also
be higher if the vehi-
cle hits something that absorbs the impact, either by bending or moving (for example,
another stationary vehi
cle, a pole or a guard
rail). The initial stage of airbag inflation is themost forceful, and can cause serious injury or death if you are too clos
e to the deploying air-
bag. Accordingly, it is important that youalways wear the available seat belt.

Use the emergency key in such circum- stances.Refer to “To operate without using the F.A.S.T.-key” on page 5-19. The F.A.S.T.-key is constantly performing reception operations
in its communication
with the vehicle. This means that the batteryis always running down, regardless of how often the F.A.S.T.-key is used. The battery life is about 1 to 2 years, depending on theusage conditions. Since the F.A.S.T.-key is constantly perform- ing reception operati
ons, the reception of
strong electromagnetic
waves can accelerate
the running down of the ba
ttery. Do not place

For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be
left in selector lever

Operation of the CVT

speed or idle speed is
high, or with the air
conditioning operating.Do not release the brak
e pedal until you are
ready to drive away. Depress the brake pedal
with the right foot at
all times. Using the left foot could cause driver move-ment delay in case of an emergency. To prevent sudden acce
leration, never run
the engine at high rpms when shifting from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting
on the brake pedal will
affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-mature wear of brake pads.
Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance
with driving condi-
tions.Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position “D” (DRIVE), “Ds” (DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING), “L”(LOW) or coast forward in the “R” (REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and in
creased brake pedal
and steering effort could
lead to an accident.
Do not rev the engine

pressed when the vehicle is stationary. This can damage the CVT. Also, when you depress

start assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf- ficiently depressed, if

loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is not designed to keep the vehicle stopped in
place on uphill slopes
for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not
rely on using the
hill start assist to ma
intain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not perform the
following operation
while the hill start assist is operating.[Except for vehicles equipped with the F. A . S . T. - k e y ] Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” or“ACC” position. [Vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key] Put the operation mode in OFF or ACC. Thehill start assist coul
d stop operating, which

The brake assist system
is a device assisting
drivers who cannot depress the brake pedalfirmly such as in em

and provides greater braking force.
If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied
with more force than
usual.

gearshift lever is in the following position.[When starting an uphi
ll slope forwards.]
The gearshift lever is in any position other than “R” (Reverse). (The hill start assist will operate, even if thegearshift lever is in the “N” (Neutral) posi- tion.) [When starting an uphill

The gearshift lever is in the “R” (Reverse) position. (The hill start assist
will not operate when
the gearshift lever is in the “N” (Neutral) position.) • On vehicles with CVT,
the selector lever is
in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). • The vehicle is comple
tely stationary, with
the brake pedal depressed. • The parking brake is released. The hill start assist wi
ll not operate if the
accelerator pedal is
depressed before the
brake pedal is released. The hill start assist also operates when reversing on an uphill slope. When the hill start a
ssist is activated, you
may feel the operating sound or vibrationfrom under the body. This is a normal result of the hill start assist operation, and does not indicate a problem.NOTE

Park your vehicle in a

ry to stop the vehicle
immediately, but th

Brake assist system
CAUTIONThe brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make
sure to always keep a
sufficient distance be
tween your vehicle and
a vehicle in front of you without relying toomuch on the brake assist system.NOTE
Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released.To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from the brake pedal. When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in smallmotions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brakeassist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal. When the anti-lock brake system warning light is illuminated, th

The anti-lock braking
system helps prevent
the wheels from locking up when braking. This helps maintain vehicle drivability andsteering wheel handling. When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces. Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situations where brakes are applied suddenly. Th
is system may also
prevent the wheels from locking whenyou drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.
When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat-ing and hear a unique
sound. It may also
feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, simply hold the brakepedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reduced braking performance.

WA R N I N GDo not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would makethe steering wheel extremely hard to turn,possibly resulting
in an accident.
NOTE
During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection f
unction may be acti-
vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This fu
nction will make the
steering wheel graduall
y harder to turn. In
this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal. If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with
the headlights on, the
headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The he
adlights will return to
their original brightness after a short while.
Electric power steering system warning light
CAUTION If the warning light appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your
choice as soon as pos-
sible. It may become ha
rder to turn the steer-
ing wheel.
Active stability control (ASC)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physicsfrom acting on the vehicle. This system, like any other system, has
limits and cannot help
you to maintain traction and control of thevehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accident
s. It is the driver’s
responsibillty to drive carefully, This meanstaking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four
wheels. Otherwise, the
ASC may not work properly.
