Change into a lower gearingood time on long
and steep downhillgradients. This isespecially
impo rtant ifthe veh icle isladen. By doing so, you
will make use of the braking effect of the engine.
This relieves the load on the brake system and
prevents the brakes from overheating and wear-
ing too quickly.
If Distance Pilot DI STRONIC detects that there is
a risk of a co llision, you will be warned visually
and acoustically. Without your intervention, Dis-
tance Pilot DISTRONIC cannot prevent a co lli-
sion. An intermittent warning tone willthen
sound and the distance warning lamp willlight
up inthe instrument cluster. Brake immediately
in order to increase the distance to the veh icle in
front or take evasive action pro videdit is safe to
do so.
Distance Pilot DI STRONIC operates inthe range
between 0 mph (0 km/h) and 120 mph
(200 km/h).
Do not use Distance Pilot DI STRONIC while driv -
ing on roads with steep gradients.
Sin ce Distance Pilot DI STRONIC transmits radar
waves, itcan resemble the radar detectors of
the responsible authorities. You can refer to the
relevant chapter inthe Operator's Manual if
questions are asked about this.

Important safety notes
GWARNING
Distance Pilot DI STRONIC does not react to:
Rpeople or animals
Rstationary objects on the road, e.g. stoppe d
or parked vehicles
Roncoming vehicles and crossing traffic
As a result, Distance Pilot DI STRONIC may
neither givewarnings nor intervene insuch
situations. There isa risk of an accident.
Alwa ys pay careful attention to the traff icsit-
uation and be ready to brake.
GWARNING
Distance Pilot DI STRONIC cannot always
clearly identify other road users and co mplex
traff icsituations.
In such cases, Distance Pilot DI STRONIC may:
Rgive an unnecessary warning and then
brake the vehicle
Rneither givea warning nor intervene
Raccelerate or brake unexpect edly
There isa risk of an accident.
Continue to drive carefully and be ready to
brake, especially if Distance Pilot DISTRONIC
warns you.
GWARNING
Distance Pilot DI STRONIC brakes your vehicle
with up to 50% of the maximum possible
deceleration. If this deceleration isnot suffi-
cient, Distance Pilot DI STRONIC alerts you
wit h a visual and acoustic warning. There is a
risk of an accident.
Apply the brakes yourself inthese situations
and try to take evasive action.
!When Distance Pilot DI STRONIC or the
HOLD function are activated, the vehicle
brakes automatically in certain situations.

Parking Pilot is activated automatically when
driving forward. The system is operational at
speeds of up to approximately 22 mph
(35 km/h). While in operation, the system inde-
pendently locates and measures parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle.
Parking Pilot will only detect parking spaces
which are:
Rparallel or at right angles to the direction of
travel
Rthat are parallel to the direction of travel and
at least 59 in (1.5 m) wide
Rthat are parallel to the direction of travel and
at least 39.5 in (1.0 m)longer than your vehi-
cle
Rat right angles to the direction of travel and at
least 39.5 in (1.0 m) wider than your vehicle
iNote that Parking Pilot cannot measure the
length of parking spaces if they are at right
angles to the direction of travel. You will need
to judge whether your vehicle will fit into the
parking space.
When driving at speeds below 19 mph
(30 km/h), you will see parking symbol ;as a
status indicator on the instrument cluster. When
a parking space has been detected, an arrow
towards the right or the left also appears. Park-
ing Pilot only displays parking spaces on the
front-passenger side as standard. Parking
spaces on the driver's side are displayed as
soon as the turn signal on the driver's side is
activated. When parking on the driver's side,
this must remain activated until you confirm the use of Parking Pilot by pressing the abutton
on the multifunction steering wheel. The syst
em
automatically determines whether the parking
space is parallel or at right angles to the direc-
tion of travel.
A parking space is displayed while you are driv- ing past it, and until you are approximately 50 ft
(15 m) away from it.

Parking Pilot no longer supports you with steer-
ing interventions and brake applications. When
Parking Pilot is finished, you must steer and
brake again yourself. Parking Assist
PARKTRONIC is still available.
Parking tips:
RThe way your vehicle is positioned in the park- ing space after parking is dependent on vari-
ous factors. These include the position and
shape of the vehicles parked in front and
behind it and the conditions of the location. It
may be the case that Parking Pilot guides you
too far into a parking space, or not far enough
into it. In some cases, it may also lead you
across or onto the curb. Cancel the parking
procedure with Parking Pilot if necessary.
RYou can also prematurely select transmissionposition h. The vehicle redirects and does
not drive as far into the parking space. Should
the transmission change take place too early,
the parking procedure is canceled. A sensible
parking position can no longer be achieved
from this position.
Exiting a parking space
In order for Parking Pilot to support you when
exiting the parking space:
Rthe border of the parking space must be high
enough at the front and the rear. A curb stone is too small, for example.
Rthe border of the parking space must not be
too wide. Your vehicle can be maneuvered
into the parking space at a maximum angle of
45° to the starting position.
Ra maneuvering distance of at least 3.3 ft
(1.0 m) must be available.
Parking Pilot can assist you with exiting a park-
ing space only if you have parked the vehicle
parallel to the direction of travel using Parking
Pilot.

Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Important safety notes
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronic
parking aid with ultrasound. It monitors the area
around your vehicle using six sensors in the
front bumper and six sensors in the rear
bumper. Parking Assist PARKTRONIC visually
and audibly indicates the distance between your
vehicle and an object.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It is
not a replacement for your attention to your
immediate surroundings. You are always
responsible for safe maneuvering, parking and
exiting a parking space. Make sure that there

Traffic Sign Assist
General notes
Traffic Sign Assist displays the maximum speed
permitted to the driver in the instrument cluster.
The data and general traffic regulations stored in
the navigation system are used to determine the
current speed limit.
Traffic Sign Assist is a map-based system, and
for this reason, traffic signs put up temporarily
(e.g. near roadworks) are not detected. There is also no display for changing traffic signs.
Traffic signs with a restriction indicated by an
additional sign (e.g. in wet conditions) are also
shown.
The sign indicating the end of a restriction only
appears with the restriction in the instrument
cluster when:
RThe regulation must be observed with the
restriction, or
RTraffic Sign Assist is unable to determine
whether the restriction applies
If Traffic Sign Assist is unable to determine a
maximum permitted speed from any of the avail-
able sources, no speed limit appears in the
instrument cluster either.
Traffic Sign Assist is not available in all coun-
tries. In this case, display :appears in the
assistance graphic (
Ypage 231).
Important safety notes
Traffic Sign Assist is only an aid and is not always
able to correctly display speed limits. Traffic
signs always have priority over the Traffic Sign
Assist display.
The system may be either functionally impaired
or temporarily unavailable if the information in
the digital street map of the navigation system is
incorrect or out of date.

depends on the country in which you are driving. It is generally neither shown on the traffic sign
nor on the instrument cluster but must be taken
into account when observing the maximum per-
mitted speed.
