TOWING A TRAILER
WARNING: Towing trailersbeyond the maximum recommendedgross trailer weight exceeds the limitof your vehicle and could result inengine damage, transmission damage,structural damage, loss of vehiclecontrol, vehicle rollover and personalinjury.

Your vehicle may have electrical items,such as fuses or relays, related totowing. See Fuses (page 342).
Your vehicle's load capacity designationis by weight, not by volume, so youcannot necessarily use all availablespace when loading a vehicle or trailer.
Towing a trailer places an extra load onyour vehicle's engine, transmission, axle,brakes, tires and suspension. Inspectthese components periodically during,and after, any towing operation.
Load Placement
To help minimize how trailer movementaffects your vehicle when driving:
•Load the heaviest items closest tothe trailer floor.
•Load the heaviest items centeredbetween the left and right side trailertires.
•Load the heaviest items above thetrailer axles or just slightly forwardtoward the trailer tongue. Do notallow the final trailer tongue weightto go above or below 10-15% of theloaded trailer weight.
•Select a ball mount with the correctrise or drop and load capacity. Whenboth the loaded vehicle and trailerare connected, the trailer frameshould be level, or slightly angleddown toward your vehicle, whenviewed from the side.
When driving with a trailer or payload, aslight takeoff vibration or shudder maybe present due to the increased payloadweight. Additional information regardingproper trailer loading and setting yourvehicle up for towing is located inanother chapter of this manual. SeeLoad Limit (page 293).

WARNING: Driving while distractedcan result in loss of vehicle control, crashand injury. We strongly recommend thatyou use extreme caution when using anydevice that may take your focus off theroad. Your primary responsibility is the safeoperation of your vehicle. We recommendagainst the use of any hand-held devicewhile driving and encourage the use ofvoice-operated systems when possible.Make sure you are aware of all applicablelocal laws that may affect the use ofelectronic devices while driving.
WARNING: This system is an extradriving aid. It does not replace yourattention and judgment, or the need toapply the brakes. This system does NOTautomatically brake your vehicle. If you failto press the brake pedal when necessary,you may collide with another vehicle.
Note:The system is not a substitute for safedriving practices.
Note:You must always be aware of thevehicle and trailer combination and thesurrounding environment.
Note:The system does not detect or preventthe vehicle or trailer from making contactwith obstacles in the surroundingenvironment.
Note:Keep in mind that the front end of thevehicle swings out when changing thedirection of the trailer.
Note:The system relies on usermeasurements to determine stickerplacement and system limits. It is critical totake the key measurements correctly.Incorrect measurements can result in theimproper function of the system up to andincluding contact between the vehicle andtrailer.
Note:The system limits vehicle speed whenbacking up. The system is not a replacementfor proper use of the throttle and brakepedals.
Principle of Operation
This feature helps you to steer your vehiclewhen reversing with a trailer attached. Turnand hold the control knob in the directionyou want the trailer to go and the systemtakes over the steering. This allows you tofocus on checking the mirrors and operatingthe brake and accelerator.

2. Add a personalized name for the trailerusing the screen prompts. Use the downarrow to scroll to the desired letter andthen press the toggle switch to advanceto the next letter. Press OK to continue.
3.Select the type of trailer brake system forthe trailer you are adding.
4.Select the brake effort level for the trailer.
Note:The default option is low. Werecommend this for most trailers. If thetrailer's brakes require more initial voltage,or if you prefer more aggressive braking,then select the other options as required.
Some examples of conventional type trailersare below.
Note:You cannot use the system with thetypes of trailers marked with the cross.
The system only works with conventionaltrailers. It does not work with other typesincluding goose neck and fifth wheel.
Follow the information display prompts.
Step 3: Place the Sticker on the TrailerFrame
You must place the supplied sticker in anarea visible by the rear view camera.
Note:An assistant can help to carry out thefollowing procedure.
Note:Make sure nothing can obstruct therear view cameras view of the sticker. Forexample, items such as a jack handle orwiring.
Note:Position the sticker on a flat, dry andclean horizontal surface. For best resultsapply the sticker when temperatures areabove 32°F (0°C).
Note:Do not move stickers after you positionthem. Do not re-use any stickers if removed.
Note:You can purchase additional stickersthrough your authorized dealer.

Note:The system does not function if yourhands are on the steering wheel. Removeyour hands to resume operation.
Follow the screen prompts to steer yourvehicle and trailer.
Note:You may have to drive forward tostraighten the trailer.
Take your hands off the steering wheel andturn the Pro Trailer Backup Assist controlknob instead. The knob acts as the steeringcontrol for the trailer.
Note:The more you turn the knob, thesharper the trailer turns.
Turn and hold counterclockwise to make thetrailer go left.
Turn and hold clockwise to make the trailergo right.
Note:Practice maneuvering with the systemin a safe open area first.
Note:Try backing up in a straight line andthen turning the knob slowly in the directionyou want to go.
Note:Quickly turning and releasing the knobresults in a jerky movement of the vehicle.
Release the knob when the trailer is movingin the direction you want. Control theaccelerator and brakes while the systemsteers your vehicle automatically to keep thetrailer moving straight back.
Note:You may have to use the knob tocorrect the trailer direction when attemptingto move the trailer straight back under someconditions.
Note:Your vehicle speed is automaticallylimited.
Note:When you release the knob or turn itto the center position, your vehicle followsthe trailer's path.
Troubleshooting
Note:The system requires a clear view ofthe sticker placed on the trailer. You mustkeep the camera lens and sticker clean forthe system to operate correctly.

This feature applies your vehicle brakes atindividual wheels and, if necessary, reducesengine power. If the trailer begins to sway,the stability control light flashes and themessage TRAILER SWAY REDUCE SPEEDappears in the information display. The firstthing to do is slow your vehicle down, thenpull safely to the side of the road and checkfor proper tongue load and trailer loaddistribution. See Load Carrying (page 288).

WEIGHTS
Note:Do not exceed the trailer weightfor your vehicle configuration listed inthe chart below.
Note:Make sure to take intoconsideration trailer frontal area. Do notexceed 36.5 feet² (3.39 meters²) if yourvehicle is equipped with the standardtowing package, or 60 feet² (5.57meters²) if your vehicle is equipped withthe optional heavy duty package.
Note:Exceeding this limitation maysignificantly reduce the performance ofyour towing vehicle. Selecting a trailerwith a low aerodynamic drag androunded front design helps optimizeperformance and fuel economy.
Note:For high altitude operation,reduce the gross combined weight by2% per 1,000 ft (300 m) starting at the1,000 ft (300 m) elevation point.
Note:Certain states require electrictrailer brakes for trailers over a specifiedweight. Be sure to check stateregulations for this specified weight. Themaximum trailer weights listed may belimited to this specified weight, as thevehicle’s electrical system may notinclude the wiring connector needed to
activate electric trailer brakes.
Your vehicle may tow a trailer providedthe maximum trailer weight is less thanor equal to the maximum trailer weightlisted for your vehicle configuration onthe following chart.
To calculate the maximum loaded trailerweight for your vehicle:
1.Start with the gross combined weightrating for your vehicle model andaxle ratio. See the following chart.
2.Subtract all of the following that
apply to your vehicle:
•Vehicle curb weight
•Hitch hardware weight, such as adraw bar, ball, locks or weightdistributing
•Driver weight
•Passenger(s) weight
•Payload, cargo and luggageweight
•Aftermarket equipment weight.
3. This equals the maximum loadedtrailer weight for this combination.
Note:The trailer tongue load figuresinto the payload for your vehicle.Reduce the total payload by the finaltrailer tongue weight.

ESSENTIAL TOWING CHECKS
Follow these guidelines for safe towing:
•Do not tow a trailer until you drive yourvehicle at least 1,000 mi (1,600 km).
•Consult your local motor vehicle laws fortowing a trailer.
•See any instructions that come withtowing accessories for the properinstallation and adjustment specifications.
•Service your vehicle more frequently ifyou tow a trailer. See ScheduledMaintenance (page 552).
•If you use a rental trailer, follow theinstructions the rental agency gives you.
You can find information on loadspecification terms found on the tire labeland Safety Compliance label as well asinstructions on calculating your vehicle's loadin the Load Carrying chapter. See Load Limit(page 293).
Remember to account for the trailer tongueweight as part of your vehicle load whencalculating the total vehicle weight.
Trailer Towing Connector (Vehicleswith a Trailer Towing Package and7–Pin Connector)
When attaching the trailer wiring connectorto your vehicle, only use a proper fittingconnector that works with the vehicle andtrailer functions. Some seven-positionconnectors may have the SAE J2863 logo,which confirms that it is the proper wiringconnector and works correctly with yourvehicle.

If the trailer safety chain hook has a latch,make sure the latch fully closes.
Trailer Brakes (If Equipped)
WARNING: Do not connect a trailer'shydraulic brake system directly to yourvehicle's brake system. Your vehicle maynot have enough braking power and yourchances of having a collision greatlyincrease.
Electric brakes and manual, automatic orsurge-type trailer brakes are safe if you installthem properly and adjust them to themanufacturer's specifications. The trailerbrakes must meet local and federalregulations.
The rating for the tow vehicle's brakingsystem operation is at the gross vehicleweight rating, not the gross combinedweight rating.
Separate functioning brake systems arerequired for safe control of towed vehiclesand trailers weighing more than 1500 lb(680 kg) when loaded.
Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (If
Equipped)
WARNING: Use the integrated trailerbrake controller to properly adjust thetrailer brakes and check all connectionsbefore towing a trailer. Failure to followthis instruction could result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, personal injury ordeath.
When used properly, the trailer brakecontroller assists in smooth and effectivetrailer braking by powering the trailer’selectric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes witha proportional output based on the towingvehicle’s brake pressure.
The controller user interface consists of thefollowing:
A: + and - (Gain adjustment buttons): Pressingthese buttons adjusts the controller's poweroutput to the trailer brakes in 0.5 increments.You can increase the gain setting to 10.0(maximum trailer braking) or decrease it to0 (no trailer braking). The gain settingdisplays in the message center.

The controller shows gain setting, output bargraph, and trailer connectivity status in theinformation display. They appear in theinformation display as follows:
•Trailer Brake Controller Gain (withouttrailer connected): Shows the current gainsetting during a given ignition cycle andwhen adjusting the gain. This alsodisplays if you use the manual controllever or make gain adjustments with notrailer connected.
•Trailer Brake Controller Gain Output:Displays when you push your vehicle'sbrake pedal, or upon use of the manualcontrol. Bar indicators illuminate in theinformation display to indicate theamount of power going to the trailerbrakes relative to the brake pedal ormanual control input. One bar indicatesthe least amount of output; six barsindicate maximum output.
•Trailer Connected: Displays when thesystem senses a correct trailer wiringconnection (a trailer with electric trailerbrakes) during a given ignition cycle.
•Trailer Disconnected: Displays,accompanied by a single audible time,when the system senses a trailerconnection and then a disconnection,either intentional or unintentional, duringa given ignition cycle. It also displays if atruck or trailer-wiring fault occurs causingthe trailer to appear disconnected. Thismessage can also display if you use themanual control lever without a trailerconnected. After disconnecting the trailerconnector, press the brake pedal forapproximately five seconds to allow thesystem to detect and update the trailerstatus.
B: Manual control lever: Slide the controllever to the left to turn on the trailer's electricbrakes independent of the tow vehicle's. Seethe following Procedure for adjusting gainsection for instructions on proper use of thisfeature. If you use the manual control whilethe brake is also applied, the greater of thetwo inputs determines the power sent to thetrailer brakes.
•Stop lamps: Using the manual controllever illuminates both the trailer brakelamps and your vehicle brake lampsexcept the center high-mount stop lamp,if you make the proper electricalconnection to the trailer. Pressing yourvehicle brake pedal also illuminates bothtrailer and vehicle brake lamps.
Procedure for Adjusting Gain
Note:Only perform this procedure in atraffic-free environment at speeds ofapproximately 20–25 mph (32–40 km/h).
