Deactivating and Activating the Belt-MinderFeature
WARNING
While the system allows you todeactivate it, this system is designedto improve your chances of being safelybelted and surviving an accident. Werecommend you leave the system activatedfor yourself and others who may use thevehicle.
Note:The driver and front passengerwarnings switch on and off independently.When you perform this procedure for oneseating position, do not buckle the otherposition as this will terminate the process.
Read Steps 1 - 4 thoroughly beforeproceeding with the programmingprocedure.
Before following the procedure, make surethat:
•The parking brake is set.
•The transmission is in park (P) or neutral(N).
•The ignition is off.
•The driver and front passenger safetybelts are unbuckled.
1. Switch the ignition on. Do not start thevehicle.
2. Wait until the safety belt warning lightturns off (about one minute). After Step2, wait an additional 5 seconds beforeproceeding with Step 3. Once you startStep 3, you must complete the procedurewithin 30 seconds.
3.For the seating position you are switchingoff, buckle then unbuckle the safety beltthree times at a moderate speed, endingin the unbuckled state. After Step 3, thesafety belt warning light turns on.
4. While the safety belt warning light is on,buckle and then unbuckle the safety belt.After Step 4, the safety belt warning lightflashes for confirmation.
•This will switch the feature off for thatseating position if it is currently on.
•This will switch the feature on for thatseating position if it is currently off.
CHILD RESTRAINT AND SEATBELT
MAINTENANCE
Inspect the vehicle seatbelts and child safetyseat systems periodically to make sure theywork properly and are not damaged. Inspectthe vehicle and child restraint seatbelts tomake sure there are no nicks, tears or cuts.Replace if necessary. All vehicle seatbeltassemblies, including retractors, buckles,front seatbelt buckle assemblies, bucklesupport assemblies (slide bar-if equipped),shoulder belt height adjusters (if equipped),shoulder belt guide on seat backrest (ifequipped), child safety seat LATCH andtether anchors, and attaching hardware,should be inspected after a crash. Read thechild restraint manufacturer's instructions foradditional inspection and maintenanceinformation specific to the child restraint.

Seatbelts

The Personal Safety System provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is able toanalyze different occupant conditions andcrash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a variety offrontal crash situations.
The Vehicle Personal Safety System consistsof:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front seat outboard seatbelts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors and seatbelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Passenger seat position sensor.
•Front passenger sensing system.
•Passenger airbag off and on indicatorlamp.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning lamp and tone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags, crashsensors, seatbelt pretensioners, frontseatbelt usage sensors, driver seatposition sensor, front passenger sensingsystem and indicator lights.
How Does the Personal Safety SystemWork?
The Personal Safety System can adapt thedeployment strategy of the safety devicesaccording to crash severity and occupantconditions. A collection of crash andoccupant sensors provides information tothe restraints control module. During a crash,the restraints control module may deploy theseatbelt pretensioners, one or both stagesof the dual-stage airbags based on crashseverity and occupant conditions.

Proper Driver and Front PassengerSeating Adjustment
WARNING
National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA) recommendsa minimum distance of at least 10 in (25 cm)between an occupant's chest and the driverairbag module.
To properly position yourself away from theairbag:
•Move your seat to the rear as far as youcan while still reaching the pedalscomfortably.
•Recline the seat slightly (one or twodegrees) from the upright position.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seatback, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increase
the chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash is greatlyincreased.
Children and Airbags
WARNING
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front of an activeairbag. If you must use a forward-facing childrestraint in the front seat, move the seat uponwhich the child restraint is installed all theway back.
Children must always be properly restrained.Accident statistics suggest that children aresafer when properly restrained in the rearseating positions than in the front seatingposition. Failure to follow these instructionsmay increase the risk of injury in a crash.

The restraints control module also monitorsthe readiness of the above safety devicesplus the crash and occupant sensors. Awarning indicator light in the instrumentcluster indicates the readiness of the safetysystem. If this warning indicator light is notfunctioning and there is another fault withinthe system, the message cluster coulddisplay an airbag failure warning. A tonesounds, a warning indicator light illuminates,or both, until the problem is repaired. Routinemaintenance of the airbag is not required.
A difficulty with the system is indicated byone or more of the following:
The indicator light will notilluminate immediately after youswitch the ignition on.
•The indicator light either flashes or staysilluminated.
•You could hear five tones thatperiodically repeat until the problem isrepaired.
•A message could appear in theinformation display.
If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the supplementalrestraint system serviced at an authorizeddealer immediately. Unless serviced, thesystem may not function properly in theevent of a crash.
The seatbelt pretensioners and the airbagsupplemental restraint system are designedto activate when your vehicle sustains frontalor sideways deceleration sufficient to causethe restraints control module to deploy asafety device or when a certain likelihood ofa rollover event is detected by the rolloversensor.
The fact that the seatbelt pretensioners orairbags did not activate for both front seatoccupants in a crash does not mean thatsomething is wrong with the system. Rather,it means the restraints control moduledetermined the crash conditions (forexample, crash severity, belt usage) werenot appropriate to activate these safetydevices.
•The design of the front airbags is toactivate only in frontal and near-frontalcrashes (not rollovers, side impacts orrear impacts) unless the crash causessufficient frontal deceleration.
•The seatbelt pretensioners are designedto activate in frontal, near-frontal, sideand rollover crashes.
•The design of the side airbags is to inflatein certain side crashes. Side airbagscould activate in other types of crashesif the vehicle experiences sufficientsideways motion or deformation.

Headlamp High Beam
Push the lever away from you toswitch the high beam on.
Push the lever forward again or pull the levertoward you to switch the high beams off.
Flashing the Headlamp High Beam
Slightly pull the lever toward you and releaseit to flash the headlamps.
AUTOLAMPS
WARNING
The system does not relieve you ofyour responsibility to drive with duecare and attention. You may need to overridethe system if it does not turn the headlampson in low visibility conditions, for exampledaytime fog.
When the lighting control is in the autolampsposition, the headlamps turn on in low lightsituations, or when the wipers turn on.
The headlamps remain on for a period oftime after you switch the ignition off. Usethe information display controls to adjust theperiod of time that the headlamps remainon.
Note: If you switch the autolamps on, youcannot switch the high beams on until thesystem turns the low beams on.

HEADLAMP EXIT DELAY
After you switch the ignition off, you canswitch the headlamps on by pulling thedirection indicator lever toward you. You willhear a short tone. The headlamps will switchoff automatically after three minutes with anydoor open or 30 seconds after the last doorhas been closed. You can cancel this featureby pulling the direction indicator toward youagain or switching the ignition on.
DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (If
Equipped)
WARNING
The daytime running lamps systemdoes not activate the rear lamps andmay not provide adequate lighting duringlow visibility driving conditions. Make sureyou switch the headlamps on, as appropriate,during all low visibility conditions. Failure todo so may result in a crash.
Type One - Conventional (Non-Configurable)
The daytime running lamps turn on when:
1. Switching the ignition on.
2. The transmission is not in park (P) forvehicles with automatic transmissions, orreleasing the parking brake for vehicleswith manual transmissions.
3. The lighting control is in the off, parkinglamp or autolamps positions.
4. The headlamps are off.
Type Two - Configurable
Switch the daytime running lamps on or offusing the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 109).
The daytime running lamps turn on when:
1. The lamps are on in the informationdisplay.
2. Switching the ignition on.
3. The transmission is not in park (P) forvehicles with automatic transmissions, orreleasing the parking brake for vehicleswith manual transmissions.
4. The lighting control is in the autolampsposition.
5. The headlamps are off.
The other lighting control switch positionsdo not turn on the daytime running lamps.
If the daytime running lamps are off in theinformation display, the lamps stay off in allswitch positions.
AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAM
CONTROL
WARNING

Lighting

POWER WINDOWS
WARNINGS
Do not leave children unattended inyour vehicle and do not let them playwith the power windows. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personal injury.
When closing the power windows,verify they are free of obstruction andmake sure that children and pets are not inthe proximity of the window openings.
Note:You may hear a pulsing noise whenjust one of the windows is open. Lower theopposite window slightly to reduce thisnoise.
Press the switch to open the window.
Lift the switch to close the window.
One-Touch Down
Press the switch fully and release it. Pressagain or lift it to stop the window.
One-Touch Up
Lift the switch fully and release it. Press orlift it again to stop the window.
Resetting One-Touch Up
To reset the one-touch up feature, lift andhold the control until the window is fullyclosed. Once the window is fully closed,release the control. Open the window andthen try to close it automatically. If thewindow does not close automatically, repeatthe resetting procedure.
Bounce-Back
The window will stop automatically whileclosing. It reverses some distance if there isan obstacle in the way.
Overriding the Bounce-Back Feature
WARNING
When you override the bounce-backfeature the window will not reverse ifit detects an obstacle. Take care whenclosing the windows to avoid personal injuryor damage to your vehicle.
Pull up the window switch and hold within afew seconds of the window reaching thebounce-back position. The window travelsup with no bounce-back protection. Thewindow stops if you release the switchbefore the window closes fully.

Loose Mirror
If your auto-folding mirrors are manuallyfolded or unfolded, they may not workproperly even after you re-position them.You need to reset them if:
•The mirrors vibrate when you drive.
•The mirrors feel loose.
•The mirrors do not stay in the folded orunfolded position.
•One of the mirrors is not in its normaldriving position.
To reset the auto-fold feature, use thepower-folding mirror control to fold andunfold the mirrors. You may hear a loud noiseas you reset the mirrors. This sound isnormal. Repeat this process as needed eachtime the mirrors are manually folded orunfolded.
Heated Exterior Mirrors
See Heated Windows and Mirrors (page136).
Memory Mirrors (If Equipped)
You can save and recall the mirror positionsthrough the memory function. See MemoryFunction (page 143).
Signal Indicator Mirrors
The outer portion of the appropriate mirrorhousing will blink when you switch on theturn signal.
Auto-Dimming Feature (If Equipped)
The driver’s exterior mirror automaticallydims when the interior auto-dimming mirrorturns on.
Lincoln Welcome Mat
Projection lights, on the bottom of the mirrorhousings, project an image onto the grounda short distance from the vehicle. SeeLighting (page 87).
Integrated Blind Spot Mirrors (If Equipped)
WARNING
Objects in the mirror are closer thanthey appear.
The blind spot mirror has a wide-angle mirrorinside the exterior mirror that can increasevisibility along the side of your vehicle.
Check the main mirror first before a lanechange, then check the blind spot mirror. Ifno vehicles are present in the blind spotmirror and the traffic in the adjacent lane isat a safe distance, signal that you intend tochange lanes. Glance over your shoulder toverify traffic is clear and carefully changelanes.
