Driving
4-6.Driving tips
When using Eco drive mode, the
torque corresponding to the accelera-
tor pedal depression amount can be
generated more smoothly than it is in
normal conditions. In addition, the
operation of the air conditioning sys-
tem (heating/cooling) will be mini-
mized, improving the fuel economy.
( P.208)
The Eco-friendly driving is possible by
keeping the indicate of Hybrid System
Indicator within Eco area. ( P.72)
Shift the shift position to D when
stopped at a traffic light, or driving in
heavy traffic etc. Shift the shift position
to P when parking. When using the N
position, there is no positive effect on
fuel consumption. In the N position, the
gasoline engine operates but electric-
ity cannot be generated. Also, when
using the air conditio ning system, etc.,
the hybrid battery (traction battery)
power is consumed.
Drive your vehicle smoothly. Avoid
abrupt acceleration and decelera-
tion. Gradual acceleration and
deceleration will make more effec-
tive use of the electric motor (trac-
tion motor) without having to use
gasoline engine power.
Avoid repeated acceleration.
Repeated acceleration consumes
hybrid battery (traction battery)
power, resulting in poor fuel con-
sumption. Battery power can be
restored by driving with the acceler-
ator pedal slightly released.
Make sure to operate the brakes gently
and in a timely manner. A greater
amount of electrical energy can be
regenerated when slowing down.
Repeated acceleration and decelera-
tion, as well as long waits at traffic
lights, will lead to bad fuel economy.
Check traffic reports before leaving
and avoid delays as much as possible.
When driving in a traffic jam, gently
release the brake pedal to allow the
vehicle to move forward slightly while
avoiding overuse of the accelerator
pedal. Doing so can help control
excessive gasoline consumption.

When trouble arises
■Slip indicator
■Brake Override System warning light/Drive-Start Control warning light
(warning buzzer)*
*: This light illuminates on the multi-information display.
■Brake hold operated indicator
Warning lightWarning light/Details/Actions
Indicates a malfunction in:
The VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) system;
The TRAC (Traction Control) system; or
The hill-start assist control system
The light will flash when the VSC, TRAC or ABS system is operating.
Have the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer immediately.
Warning lightWarning light/Details/Actions
When the warning light flashes (and a buzzer sounds):
Indicates a malfunction in the Brake Override System or Drive-Start
Control
Have the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer immediately.
Indicates that the shift position wa s changed while depressing the accel-
erator pedal and Drive-Start Control was operated
Momentarily release th e accelerator pedal.
When the warning light flashes (and a buzzer does not sound):
Indicates that the accelerator and brake pedals are being depressed
simultaneously
Release the accelerator pedal and depress the brake pedal.
Warning lightWarning light/Details/Actions
(flashes)
Indicates a malfunction in the brake hold system
Have the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer.

●Malfunction in the EPS (Electric Power Steering) system
The electric power steering sy stem warning light comes on. ( P.335)
●Malfunction in the tire pressure warning system
The tire pressure warn ing light comes on. (P.340)
●Remaining fuel level is low
The low fuel level warning light comes on. ( P.338)
■If “Hybrid System Overheated Reduce d Output Power” is shown (LC500h)
This message may be displayed when driving under severe operating conditions. (For exam-
ple, when driving up a long steep hill.) Stop and check. ( P.366)
■If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Refrain from the Use of [N] Position” is
shown (LC500h)
The remaining charge for the hybrid battery (tra ction battery) is low. As the hybrid battery
(traction battery) cannot be charged when the shift position is in N, when stopping the vehi-
cle for a long period of time, shift the shift position to P.
■If “Traction Battery needs to be Protected Sh ift into [P] to Restart” is shown (LC500h)
The remaining charge for the hybrid battery (traction battery) is low, because the shift posi-
tion has been shifted to N for a long period of time. When moving the vehicle, shift the shift
position to P and restart the hybrid system.
■If “Shift to P Before Ex iting Vehicle” is shown
The driver’s door is opened without turning the engine switch
shift lever in any position other th an P. Shift the shift lever to P.
■If “Shift Is in N Release Accelerator Before Shifting” is shown
The accelerator pedal has been depressed when th e shift position is in N. Release the accel-
erator pedal and shift the shift position to D or R.
■If “Depress Brake when Vehicle Is Stoppe d Hybrid System May Overheat” is shown
(LC500h)
The message may be displayed when the accelerator pedal is depressed to hold the vehicle
while the vehicle is stopped on an uphill etc. The hybrid system may overheat. Release the
accelerator pedal and de press the brake pedal.
■If “Shift system malfunction Driving unavailable” is shown
There is a malfunction in the shift control system. Have the vehicle inspected by your Lexus
dealer immediately.
■If “Auto Power Off to Conserve Battery” is shown
LC500:
Power was turned off due to the automatic power off function. Next time when starting the
engine, increase the engine speed slightly an d maintain that level for approximately 5 min-
utes to recharge the battery.
LC500h:
Power was turned off due to the automatic power off function. Next time when starting the
hybrid system, operate the hybrid system for approximately 5 minutes to recharge the 12-
volt battery.
■If a message that indicates the need for the shift lever operation is shown
To prevent the shift lever from being operated incorrectly or the vehicle from moving unex-

■Treadwear
The treadwear grade is a comparative
rating based on the wear rate of the tire
when tested under controlled condi-
tions on a specified government test
course.
For example, a tire graded 150 would wear
one and a half (1 - 1/2) times as well on the
government course as a tire graded 100.
The relative performa nce of tires depends
upon the actual conditions of their use.
Performance may differ significantly from
the norm due to variatio ns in driving habits,
service practices and differences in road
characteristics and climate.
■Traction AA, A, B, C
The traction grades, from highest to
lowest, are AA, A, B and C, and they
represent the tire’s ability to stop on
wet pavement as measured under con-
trolled conditions on specified govern-
ment test surfaces of asphalt and
concrete.
A tire marked C may have poor traction
performance.
Warning: The traction grade assigned to
this tire is based on braking (straight
ahead) traction tests and does not include cornering (turning) traction.
■Temperature A, B, C
The temperature grades are A (the
highest), B, and C, representing the
tire’s resistance to the generation of
heat and its ability to dissipate heat
when tested under controlled condi-
tions on a specified indoor laboratory
test wheel.
Sustained high temperature can cause the
material of the tire to degenerate and
reduce tire life, and excessive temperature
can lead to sudd en tire failure.
Grade C corresponds to a level of perfor-
mance which all passenger car tires must
meet under the Fede ral Motor Vehicle
Safety Standard No. 109.
Grades B and A represent higher levels of
performance on the laboratory test wheel
than the minimum required by law.
Warning: The temperature grades of a tire
assume that it is properly inflated and not
overloaded.
Excessive speed, unde rinflation, or exces-
sive loading, either separately or in combi-
nation, can cause heat buildup and
possible tire failure.
