Maintenance
The maintenance menu allows the user to set
reminders for various vehicle maintenance
intervals.
WARNING
The tire replacement indicator is not a sub-
stitute for regular tire checks, including tire
pressure checks. For additional informa-
tion, refer to “Changing wheels and tires” in
the “Maintenance and do-it-yourself” sec-
tion of this manual. Many factors including
tire inflation, alignment, driving habits and
road conditions affect tire wear and when
tires should be replaced. Setting the tirereplacement indicator for a certain driving
distance does not mean your tires will last
that long. Use the tire replacement indica-
tor as a guide only and always perform
regular tire checks. Failure to perform
regular tire checks, including tire pressure
checks could result in tire failure. Serious
vehicle damage could occur and may lead to
a collision, which could result in serious per-
sonal injury or death.

XENON HEADLIGHTS
WARNING
cHIGH VOLTAGE
∙ When xenon headlights are on, they pro-duce a high voltage. To prevent an elec-
tric shock, never attempt to modify or
disassemble. Always have your xenon
headlights replaced by a certified service
technician. It is recommended that you
visit an INFINITI retailer for this service.
∙ Xenon headlights provide considerably more light than conventional headlights.
If they are not correctly aimed, they
might temporarily blind an oncoming
driver or the driver ahead of you and
cause a serious accident. If headlights are
not aimed correctly, immediately take
your vehicle to a certified service techni-
cian and have the headlights adjusted
correctly.
When the xenon headlight is initially turned
on, its brightness or color varies slightly.
However, the color and brightness will soon
stabilize. ∙
The life of xenon headlights will be
shortened by frequent on-off operation.
It is generally desirable not to turn off
the headlights for short intervals (for ex-
ample, when the vehicle stops at a traffic
signal).
∙ If the xenon headlight bulb is close to
burning out, the brightness will drasti-
cally decrease, the light will start blink-
ing, or the color of the light will become
reddish. If one or more of the above signs
appear, it is recommended that you visit
an INFINITI retailer for service.

Your INFINITI has been designed to have
minimum maintenance requirements with
long service intervals to save you both time
and money. However, some day-to-day and
regular maintenance is essential to maintain
your INFINITI’s good mechanical condition,
as well as its emissions and engine perfor-
mance.
It is the owner’s responsibility to make sure
that the scheduled maintenance, as well as
general maintenance, is performed.
As the vehicle owner, you are the only one
who can ensure that your vehicle receives
proper maintenance. You are a vital link in the
maintenance chain.
Scheduled maintenance
For your convenience, both required and op-
tional scheduled maintenance items are de-
scribed and listed in your “INFINITI Service
and Maintenance Guide”. You must refer to
that guide to ensure that necessary mainte-
nance is performed on your INFINITI at regu-
lar intervals.
General maintenance
General maintenance includes those items
which should be checked during normal day-
to-day operation. They are essential for
proper vehicle operation. It is your responsi-bility to perform these maintenance proce-
dures regularly as prescribed.
Performing general maintenance checks re-
quires minimal mechanical skill and only a few
general automotive tools.
These checks or inspections can be done by
you, a qualified technician, or, if you prefer, an
INFINITI retailer.
Where to go for service
If maintenance service is required or your
vehicle appears to malfunction, have the sys-
tems checked and corrected by an INFINITI
retailer.
INFINITI technicians are well-trained spe-
cialists who are kept up-to-date with the
latest service information through technical
bulletins, service tips, and in-retailer training
programs. They are completely qualified to
work on INFINITI vehicles
beforethey work
on your vehicle, rather than after they have
worked on it.
You can be confident that an INFINITI retail-
er’s service department performs the best job
to meet the maintenance requirements on
your vehicle — in a reliable and economical
way. During the normal day-to-day operation of
the vehicle, general maintenance should be
performed regularly as prescribed in this sec-
tion. If you detect any unusual sounds, vibra-
tions or smell, be sure to check for the cause,
or it is recommended that you visit an
INFINITI retailer to do it promptly. In addi-
tion, it is recommended that you visit an
INFINITI retailer if you think that repairs are
required.
When performing any checks or maintenance
work, closely observe the “Maintenance pre-
cautions” in this section.

WARNING
∙ Operating the engine with the air cleanerfilter off can cause you or others to be
burned. The air cleaner filter not only
cleans the intake air, it also stops the
flame if the engine backfires. If the air
cleaner is not installed and the engine
backfires, you could be burned. Never
drive with the air cleaner filter off. Be
cautious working on the engine when the
air cleaner is off. ∙ Never pour fuel into the throttle body or
attempt to start the engine with the air
cleaner removed. Doing so could result in
serious injury.
To remove the filter from the air cleaner, push
the tabs
Aand pull the cover upward.
The viscous paper type filter element (if so
equipped) should not be cleaned and reused.
The dry paper type filter element (if so
equipped) may be cleaned and reused. Re-
place the air filter according to the mainte-
nance log shown in a separate maintenance
booklet.
When replacing the air filter, wipe the inside
of the air cleaner housing and the cover with
a damp cloth.
NOTE:
After installing a new air cleaner, make sure
the air cleaner cover is seated in the housing
and latch the clips
A.
AIR CONDITIONER FILTER
The air conditioner filter restricts the entry of
airborne dust and pollen particles and re-
duces some objectionable outside odors. The
filter is located behind the glove box. For
additional information on change intervals,
refer to the “INFINITI Service and Mainte-
nance Guide”.
If replacement is required, it is recommended
that you visit an INFINITI retailer for this
service.

CHECKING BRAKE PEDAL
With the engine running, check the distanceA
between the upper surface of the pedal and
the metal floor. If it is out of the range shown,
it is recommended that you visit an INFINITI
retailer for service.
Distance A: Under depression force of
490 N (110 lbs)
90 mm (3 1/2 in) or more
Self-adjusting brakes
Your vehicle is equipped with self-adjusting
brakes. The front and rear disc-type brakes self-
adjust every time the brake pedal is applied.
WARNING
Have your brake system checked if the
brake pedal height does not return to nor-
mal. It is recommended that you visit an
INFINITI retailer for this service.
Brake pad wear indicators
The disc brake pads on your vehicle have
audible wear indicators. When a brake pad
requires replacement, a high pitched scraping
or screeching sound will be heard when the
vehicle is in motion. The noise will be heard
whether or not the brake pedal is depressed.
Have the brakes checked as soon as possible
if the wear indicator sound is heard.
Under some driving or climate conditions, oc-
casional brake squeak, squeal or other noise
may be heard. Occasional brake noise during
light to moderate stops is normal and does
not affect the function or performance of the
brake system.
Proper brake inspection intervals should be
followed.
For additional information regard-
ing brake inspections, refer to the appropri-
ate maintenance schedule information in the
“INFINITI Service and Maintenance Guide”.
BRAKE BOOSTER
Check the brake booster function as follows:
1. With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal several times. When
brake pedal movement (distance of
travel) remains the same from one pedal
application to the next, continue on to
the next step.
2. While depressing the brake pedal, start the engine. The pedal height should drop
a little.
3. With the brake pedal depressed, stop the engine. Keep the pedal depressed for
about 30 seconds. The pedal height
should not change.
4. Run the engine for one minute without depressing the brake pedal, then turn it
off. Depress the brake pedal several
times. The pedal travel distance will de-
crease gradually with each depression as
the vacuum is released from the booster.
If the brakes do not operate properly, have
the brakes checked. It is recommended that
you visit an INFINITI retailer for this service.

The wheel nuts must be kept tightened to
specifications at all times. It is recommended
that wheel nuts be tightened to specification
at each tire rotation interval.
WARNING
∙ After rotating the tires, check and adjustthe tire pressure.
∙ Retighten the wheel nuts when the ve- hicle has been driven for 1,000 km
(600 miles) (also in cases of a flat tire,
etc.).
∙ Do not include the spare tire in the tire rotation.
∙ Incorrect tire selection, fitting, care or maintenance can affect vehicle safety
with risk of accident and injury.
∙ If in doubt, consult an INFINITI retailer or the tire manufacturer.
∙ Improperly inflated tires can fail sud- denly and cause an accident.
∙ Before taking a long trip, or whenever you heavily load your vehicle, use a tire
pressure gauge to ensure that the tire
pressures are at the specified level.
Tire wear and damage
1. Wear indicator
2. Location mark
WARNING
∙ Tires should be periodically inspected forwear, cracking, bulging or objects caught
in the tread. If excessive wear, cracks,
bulging or deep cuts are found, the tire(s)
should be replaced.
∙ The original tires have built-in tread wear indicators. When the wear indicators are
visible, the tire(s) should be replaced.
∙ Tires degrade with age and use. Have tires, including the spare, over 6 years old
checked by a qualified technician because
some tire damage may not be obvious.
Replace the tires as necessary to prevent
tire failure and possible personal injury.
∙ Improper service of the spare tire may result in serious personal injury. If it is
necessary to repair the spare tire, con-
tact an INFINITI retailer.
Replacing wheels and tires
When replacing a tire, use the same size,
tread design, speed rating and load carrying
capacity as originally equipped. For addi-
tional information, refer to “Wheels and tires”
in the “Technical and consumer information”
section of this manual.
