Locking and Unlocking the Doors
Key Types and Functions
This vehicle comes with the following keys:
Use the key to start and stop the engine, and to lock and unlock the doors and
tailgate. You can also lock and unlock the doors and tailgate pressing the buttons
on remote transmitter.The built-in key can be used to lock/unlock the
doors when the smart entry remote battery
becomes weak and th e power door lock/
unlock operation is disabled.
To remove the built-in key, slide the release
knob and then pull out the key. To reinstall
the built-in key, push th e built-in key into the
smart entry remote until it clicks.

All the keys have an immobilizer system. The
immobilizer system helps protect against vehicle
theft.

The keys contain precision electronics.
Adhere to the following advi ce to prevent damage to
the electronics:
•Do not leave the keys in direct sunlight, or in
locations with high temperature or high humidity.
•Do not drop the keys or set heavy objects on them.
•Keep the keys away from liquids.
•Do not take the keys apart except for replacing the
battery.
If the circuits in the keys are damaged, the engine
may not start, and the remote transmitter may not
work.
If the keys do not work properly, have them
inspected by a dealer.
You can remotely start the engine using the one-way

Controls
Can be used to start an d stop the engine, and
lock and unlock driver's door.
Contains a number that you will need if you
purchase a replacement key.

leave the valet key.

Keep the key number tag separate from the key in a
safe place outside of your vehicle.
If you wish to purchase an additional key, contact a
dealer.
If you lose your key and you cannot start the engine,
contact a dealer.

■Locking the doors
Press the lock button.
Once: u Some exterior lights flash, all the doors
and tailgate lock, and the security system
sets.
Twice (within five se conds after the first
push):
u The beeper sounds and verifies the
security system is set.
■Unlocking the doors
Press the unlock button.
Once: u Some exterior lights flash twice, and the
driver's door unlocks.
Twice:
u The remaining doors and tailgate unlock.
■Using the Remote Transmitter1Using the Remote Transmitter
If you do not open a door or the tailgate within 30
seconds of unlocking the vehicle with the remote
transmitter, the doors and ta ilgate will automatically
relock.
You can change the relock timer setting. 2 Customized Features P. 351
The remote transmitter will not work when:
•The key is in the ignition switch.
•The power mode is not in VEHICLE OFF.
The remote transmitter us es low-power signals, so
the operating range may vary depending on the
surroundings.
The remote will not lock th e vehicle when a door is
open.
If the distance at which the remote transmitter works
varies, the batter y is probably low.
If the LED does not come on when you press a

If the smart entry remote battery or the ve hicle battery is dead, use the key instead
of the smart entry remote. Fully insert the key and turn it.
■Locking/Unlocking the Doors Using a Key1Locking/Unlocking the Doors Using a Key
When you lock the driver's door with a key, all the
other doors and tail gate lock at the same time. When
unlocking, the driver's door unlocks first. Turn the
key a second time within a few seconds to unlock the
remaining doors a nd the tailgate.
You can customize the door unlock mode setting. 2 Customized Features P. 351
Unlocking the doors with the key causes the security
system to alarm. Always unlock the doors with the
remote transmitter.

■Locking the driver's door
Push the lock tab forward

■Lockout prevention system
The doors and tailgate cannot be locked when the key is in the ignition switch.
The doors and tailgate cannot be locked wh en the smart entry remote is inside the
vehicle.
■Locking a Door Without Using a Key1 Locking a Door Without Using a Key
When you lock the driver's door, all the other doors
and tailgate lock at the same time.
Make sure you have the key in your hand when you
lock the driver's door, any of the other doors or the
tailgate, otherwis e you may end up locking the key
inside the vehicle.

If you press the outer handle of the tailgate for
no longer than one second, the tailgate opens
automatically.
u The beeper sounds.
u If you want to open the tailgate
manually, press the button for more than
one second.

If you are carrying the smart entry remote, you
do not have to unlock the tailgate before
opening it.
To close the tailgate, press the outer handle
again while the tailgate opening.
If you press the outer handle again while the
power tailgate is moving, it will stop.
Press the outer handle, and the power tailgate
will reverse direction.

Do not leave the key, remote transmitter*, or smart
entry remote* in the cargo area before closing the
tailgate.
Even if you are not carrying the smart entry remote,

Opening/Closing the Tailgate
When all the doors are unlocked or press the
tailgate unlock button on the remote
transmitter, the tailgate is unlocked.
Press the tailgate release button and lift open
the tailgate.
If you are carrying the smart entry remote, you
do not have to unlock the tailgate before
opening it.
To close the tailgate, grab the inner handle,
pull the tailgate down, and push it closed
from outside.

tailgate.

Security System
Immobilizer System
The immobilizer system prevents a key that has not been pre-registered from
starting the engine. Each key contains electronic transmitters that use electronic
signals to verify the key.
Pay attention to the following when in serting the key into the ignition switch
* or
pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button*:
• Do not allow objects that emit strong radio waves near the ignition switch* or the
ENGINE START/STOP button*.
• Make sure the key is not covered by or touching a metal object.
• Do not bring a key from another vehicle's immobilizer system near the ignition
switch
* or the ENGINE START/STOP button*.
Security System Alarm*
The security system alarm activates when the tailgate, hood or doors are forcibly
opened. The alarm does not go off if the tailgate or doors are opened with the key,
remote transmitter or smart entry system.
However, the alarm goes off if a door is op ened with the key, then the shift lever is
moved out of
(P or the hood is opened before the power mode is set to ON.
■When the security system alarm activates
The horn sounds intermittently and all the exterior lights flash.
1Immobilizer System
NOTICE
Leaving the key in the vehicl e can result in theft or
accidental movement of the vehicle.
Always take the key with you whenever you leave the
vehicle unattended.
Do not alter the system or add other devices to it.
Doing so may damage the system and make your
vehicle inoperable.
Canadian models only: Apply and hold the brake
pedal before turning the vehicle on the first time after
the battery has been disconnected.
1 Security System Alarm*
The security alarm continues for a maximum of two
minutes until the security system deactivates.
