Move the wiper lever upward to the firstposition to switch autowipers on.
Use the rotary control to adjust thesensitivity of the autowipers. When youselect low sensitivity, the wipers operatewhen the sensor detects a large amountof water on the windshield. When youselect high sensitivity, the wipers operatewhen the sensor detects a small amountof water on the windshield.
Note:Keep the outside of the windshieldclean. The rain sensor is very sensitive andthe wipers may operate if dirt, mist orinsects hit the windshield.
If you leave autowipers on, it may notoperate when you switch the ignition onduring freezing temperatures. This isbecause the system has deactivated therain sensor to prevent damage to thewindshield wipers. Defrost the windshieldbefore reactivating the rain sensor. Youcan reactivate the rain sensor by movingthe rotary control or switching autowipersoff and on.
Note:Fully defrost the windshield beforeyou switch the windshield wipers on.
Note:Make sure that you switch thewindshield wipers off before entering a carwash.
Wet or winter weather conditions couldcause unexpected wiping or smearing.
To keep the windshield clear:
•Lower the sensitivity of the autowipersto reduce the amount of smearing onthe windshield.
•Switch autowipers off.
Note: If streaks or smears appear on thewindshield, clean the windshield and thewiper blades. If that does not resolve theissue, install new wiper blades. SeeAutowipers (page 67).
WINDSHIELD WASHERS
Pull the lever toward you to operate thewindshield washers. When you release thelever, the wipers operate for a short time.A courtesy wipe occurs a short time afterthe wipers stop to clear any remainingwasher fluid.
Note: Do not operate the washers whenthe washer reservoir is empty. This couldcause the washer pump to overheat.
Heated Washer Jets (If Equipped)
The system heats the washer fluid whenthe heated windshield is on.

Windshield Wiper ActivatedHeadlamps (If Equipped)
When the headlamp switch is in theAutolamps position, the windshield wiperactivated exterior lamps will turn on within10 seconds when you switch thewindshield wipers on. They turn offapproximately 60 seconds after you switchthe windshield wipers off.
This feature does not turn on the exteriorlamps:
•During a single wipe.
•While the wipers are on to clear washerfluid during a wash condition.
•If the wipers are in automatic orintermittent modes.
Note:If you have autolamps andautowipers switched on the low beamheadlamps will turn on automatically whenthe windshield wipers operate continuously.
Autolamps Delay (If Equipped)
When the Autolamps have the headlampsand position/parklamps turned on, and theignition is turned OFF, the headlamps andposition/parklamps will remain on for anadditional 20 seconds (the autolamp exitdelay) or until the Autolamps are disabled.
You can change the delay period in theinformation display. See InformationDisplays (page 85).
INSTRUMENT LIGHTING
DIMMER
Press it repeatedly or press it and hold ituntil the desired level is reached.
Note:If you disconnect the battery or itloses charge the instrument lighting willreturn to its brightest setting.
HEADLAMP EXIT DELAY
After you switch the ignition off, you canswitch the headlamps on by pulling thedirection indicator lever toward you. Youwill hear a short tone. The headlamps willswitch off automatically after threeminutes with any door open or 30 secondsafter the last door has been closed. Youcan cancel this feature by pulling thedirection indicator toward you again orswitching the ignition on.

ENGINE COOLANT CHECK
WARNINGS
Do not add engine coolant when theengine is hot. Steam and scaldingliquids released from a hot coolingsystem can burn you badly. Also, spillingcoolant on hot engine parts can burn you.
Do not put engine coolant in thewindshield washer fluid container. Ifsprayed on the windshield, enginecoolant could make it difficult to seethrough the windshield.
To reduce the risk of personal injury,make sure the engine is cool beforeunscrewing the coolant pressurerelief cap. The cooling system is underpressure. Steam and hot liquid can comeout forcefully when you loosen the capslightly.
Do not add coolant further than theMAX mark.
When the engine is cold, check theconcentration and level of the coolant atthe intervals listed in the scheduledmaintenance information. See ScheduledMaintenance (page 383).
Note:Make sure that the coolant level isbetween the MIN and MAX marks on thecoolant reservoir.
Note: Coolant expands when it is hot. Thelevel may extend beyond the MAX mark.
Maintain coolant concentration within48% to 50%, which equates to a freezepoint between -30°F (-34°C) and -34°F(-37°C). Coolant concentration should bechecked using a refractometer. We do notrecommend the use of hydrometers orcoolant test strips for measuring coolantconcentration.
Adding Coolant
WARNING
Never remove the coolant reservoircap when the engine is running orhot.
Note:Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable. Do not use coolant orwindshield washer fluid outside of itsspecified function and vehicle location.
Note: Do not use stop leak pellets, coolingsystem sealants, or non-specified additivesas they can cause damage to the enginecooling or heating systems. Resultingcomponent damage may not be covered bythe vehicle Warranty.
It is very important to use predilutedcoolant approved to the correctspecification in order to avoid plugging thesmall passageways in the engine coolingsystem. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 279). Do not mixdifferent colors or types of coolant in yourvehicle. Mixing of engine coolants or usingan incorrect coolant may harm the engineor cooling system components and maynot be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
Note:If prediluted coolant is not available,use the approved concentrated coolantdiluting it to 50/50 with distilled water. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page 279).Using water that has not been deionisedmay contribute to deposit formation,corrosion and plugging of the small coolingsystem passageways.
Note:Coolants marketed for all makes andmodels may not be approved to Fordspecifications and may cause damage tothe cooling system. Resulting componentdamage may not be covered by the vehicleWarranty.
If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.

WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING
If you operate your vehicle intemperatures below 40°F (5°C), usewasher fluid with antifreezeprotection. Failure to use washer fluid withantifreeze protection in cold weather couldresult in impaired windshield vision andincrease the risk of injury or accident.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level islow. Only use a washer fluid that meetsFord specifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 271).
State or local regulations on volatileorganic compounds may restrict the useof methanol, a common windshield washerantifreeze additive. Washer fluidscontaining non-methanol antifreezeagents should be used only if they providecold weather protection without damagingthe vehicle’s paint finish, wiper blades orwasher system.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNINGS
Batteries normally produce explosivegases which can cause personalinjury. Therefore, do not allowflames, sparks or lighted substances tocome near the battery. When working nearthe battery, always shield your face andprotect your eyes. Always provide correctventilation.
When lifting a plastic-cased battery,excessive pressure on the end wallscould cause acid to flow through thevent caps, resulting in personal injury anddamage to the vehicle or battery. Lift thebattery with a battery carrier or with yourhands on opposite corners.
WARNINGS
Keep batteries out of reach ofchildren. Batteries contain sulfuricacid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes orclothing. Shield your eyes when workingnear the battery to protect against possiblesplashing of acid solution. In case of acidcontact with skin or eyes, flushimmediately with water for a minimum of15 minutes and get prompt medicalattention. If acid is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.
Battery posts, terminals and relatedaccessories contain lead and leadcompounds. Wash hands afterhandling.
This vehicle may have more than onebattery. Removing the battery cablesfrom only one battery does notdisconnect your vehicle electrical system.Make sure you disconnect the batterycables from all batteries whendisconnecting power. Failure to do so maycause serious personal injury or propertydamage.
For vehicles with Auto-Start-Stopthe battery requirement is different.You must replace the battery withone of exactly the same specification.
The battery is located in the enginecompartment. See Under HoodOverview (page 204).
Your vehicle has a maintenance-freebattery. It does not require additionalwater during service.
If your vehicle battery has a cover, makesure you correctly install it after cleaningor replacing the battery.

Run the tip of your fingers over the edge ofthe blade to check for roughness.
Clean the wiper blades with washer fluidor water applied with a soft sponge orcloth.

Note:Do not hold the wiper blade whenlifting the wiper arm.
Note:Make sure that the wiper arm doesnot spring back against the glass when thewiper blade is not attached.
1.Lift the wiper arm and then press thewiper blade locking button.
2.Remove the wiper blade.
3.Install in the reverse order.
Note:Make sure that the wiper blade locksinto place.
Rear Window Wiper Blade
1.Lift the wiper arms to the maximumextent and hold it.
2.Pull the wiper blade away from thewiper arm.
3.Install the new wiper by aligning withthe wiper arm groove and clip themtogether.
