This document presents the information and recommendations required
for you to be able to explore your vehicle in complete safety.
Your vehicle will be fitted with only some of the equipment described in
this document, depending on its trim level, version and the specification
for the country in which it was sold.
The descriptions and illustrations are given without any obligation.
DS AUTOMOBILES reser ves the right to modify the technical
characteristics, equipment and accessories without having to update
this edition of the guide.
In this document you will find all of the instructions and
recommendations on use that will allow you to enjoy your vehicle to the
fullest. It is strongly recommended that you familiarise yourself with it
as well as the Maintenance and Warranty Guide which will provide you
with information about warranties, servicing and roadside assistance
associated with your vehicle. Thank you for choosing a DS 4.
If ownership of your vehicle is transferred, please ensure this Complete
Handbook is passed on to the new owner.

Limit the causes of excess
consumption
Spread loads throughout the vehicle; place
the heaviest items in the bottom of the boot,
as close as possible to the rear seats.
Limit the loads carried in the vehicle and
reduce wind resistance (roof bars, roof rack,
bicycle carrier, trailer...). Preferably, use a roof
box.
Remove roof bars and roof racks after use.
At the end of winter, remove snow tyres and
refit your summer tyres.
Observe the recommendations on
maintenance
Check the tyre pressures regularly, when cold,
referring to the label in the door aperture,
driver's side.
Carry out this check in particular:

t each change of season,

fter a long period out of use. Have your vehicle ser viced regularly (engine
oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter...) and
obser ve the schedule of operations in the
manufacturer's service schedule.
With a BlueHDi Diesel engine, if the SCR
system is faulty, your vehicle becomes
polluting. As soon as possible, visit a member
of the dealer network or a qualified workshop
to make your vehicle’s level of nitrogen oxides
emissions compliant to the standard.
When filling the tank, do not continue after the
3rd cut-off of the nozzle to avoid over flow.
At the wheel of your new vehicle, it is only
after around the first 1,900 miles (3,000
kilometres) that you will see the fuel
consumption settle down to a consistent
average. Do not forget the spare wheel and the tyres on
any trailer or caravan.

Recommendations for ventilation and air conditioning
In order for these systems to be fully
effective, follow the operation and
maintenance guidelines below:

o ensure that the air is distributed
evenly, keep the external air intake
grilles at the base of the windscreen,
the nozzles, the vents, the air outlets
and the air extractor in the boot free
from obstructions.
F

D
o not cover the sunshine sensor,
located on the dashboard; this is used
for regulation of the automatic air
conditioning system.
F

O
perate the air conditioning system for
at least 5 to 10 minutes once or twice
a month to keep it in per fect working
o r d e r.
F

E
nsure that the passenger
compartment filter is in good condition
and replace the filter elements
periodically. We recommend the use of
a combined passenger compartment
filter. Thanks to its special active
additive, it helps both to purify the air
breathed by the occupants and to keep
the passenger compartment clean
(reduction of allergic symptoms, bad
odours and greasy deposits). F
T o ensure correct operation of the
air conditioning system, you are also
advised to have it checked regularly as
recommended in the Maintenance and
Warranty Guide.

I
f the system does not produce cold air,
switch it off and contact the dealer network
or a qualified workshop.
When towing the maximum load on a steep
gradient in high temperatures, switching off
the air conditioning increases the available
engine power and so improves the towing
ability.
To avoid the windows misting up and
deterioration in the quality of the air:
do not drive for too long with the ventilation
switched off.
Do not keep air recirculation set for an
extended period. If after an extended stop in sunshine, the
interior temperature is very high, first air
the passenger compartment for a few
moments.
Put the air flow control at a setting high
enough to quickly change the air in the
passenger compartment.
The condensation created by the air
conditioning results in a discharge of
water under the vehicle which is per fectly
normal.
Stop & Star t
The heating and air conditioning systems
only work when the engine is running.
To maintain a comfortable temperature
in the passenger compartment, you can
temporarily deactivate the Stop & Start
system.

If this procedure is not followed, an audible
signal is heard, accompanied by a message in
the instrument panel screen.

ith the engine running, press the brake
pedal.

ect position R , D or M.
If you do not press the brake pedal
when trying to move the gear selector
out of position P , this warning lamp or
this symbol appears in the instrument
panel accompanied by the flashing
of the P symbol, the display of a
message and an audible signal.
F Check that the display in the instrument panel agrees with the position engaged.

radually release the brake pedal.
If the parking brake is released manually, the
vehicle moves off immediately.
If the parking brake is applied and automatic
mode is activated, accelerate progressively. If the parking brake does not release
automatically, check that the front doors
are fully closed.
If position N is selected inadvertently while
driving, allow the engine to return to idle,
then select position D to accelerate.
When the engine is running at idle, with
the brakes released, if position R
, D or
M is selected, the vehicle moves even
without the accelerator being pressed.
Never leave children unsuper vised in the
vehicle when the engine is running.
When carrying out maintenance with the
engine running, apply the parking brake
and select position P .
Automatic operation
the profile of the road and the load in the
vehicle.
For maximum acceleration without touching
the selector, press the accelerator fully down
(kick-down). The gearbox changes down
automatically or holds the gear selected until
the maximum engine speed is reached.
On braking, the gearbox changes down
automatically to provide effective engine
braking.
If you release the accelerator sharply, the
gearbox will not shift to a higher gear for safety
reasons.
Never select position N while the vehicle
is moving.
Never select position P or R unless the
vehicle is completely stationary.
Sport and snow programmes
These two special programmes supplement the
automatic operation in very specific conditions
of use.

ect position D to change the six gears
automatically .
The gearbox then operates in auto-adaptive
mode, without any inter vention on the part
of the driver. It continuously selects the most
suitable gear according to the style of driving,

F Insert the key into the lock.
F T urn the key anti-clockwise to unlock the
towball fixing mechanism.

rasp the towball firmly with one hand; with
the other hand, press and turn the locking
wheel
clockwise as far as it will go.

xtract the towball downward. Be ready for the weight of the towball
(around 3.5 kg). Risk of injury!

efit the protective cover for the ball and the
protective cover for the locking wheel.

tow the towball in its bag.

efit the protective blanking plug to the
c a r r i e r.
Maintenance
Correct operation is only possible if the towball
and its carrier are kept clean.
Before cleaning the vehicle with a high
pressure jet wash, the towball harness socket
carrier must be folded away, the towball
removed and the blanking plug inserted in the
c a r r i e r.
Contact the dealer network or a qualified
workshop for any work on the towball system.
Remove the quickly detachable towball
when not towing a trailer.
The active lane departure warning
function will be deactivated when the
trailer is connected to the vehicle.

Changing a wiper blade
Before removing a front wiper
F Within one minute after switching off the ignition, operate the wiper control stalk to
position the wiper blades in the middle of
the windscreen (maintenance position).
Removing
F Lift the corresponding wiper arm away from the windscreen.

nclip and remove the wiper blade.
FittingF Position and clip the new wiper blade to the arm.

arefully lower the wiper arm.
After reassembling a front
wiper
F Switch on the ignition.
F O perate the wiper lever again to park the
wiper blades.
Fitting roof bars
As a safety measure and to avoid
damaging the roof, it is essential to use
the transverse bars approved for your
vehicle. Follow the instructions for fitting
and use supplied with the roof bars.
Some models come fitted with longitudinal
bars. These are purely aesthetic.
Transverse bars must not be fitted to
these longitudinal bars.
When fitting roof bars, use only the four
anchorage points located in the roof frame.
The points are masked by the vehicle doors
when closed.
Remove the protective covers, levering them
off with a screwdriver. Be careful not to scratch
the paint.
The roof bar mountings include a stud which
should be fitted to the opening in each
anchorage point.
Keep the protective covers safe so that they
can be refitted after removing the roof bars.

Screenwash/headlamp wash
level
To check the level or top up the fluid
on vehicles fitted with headlamp
washers, immobilise the vehicle and
switch off the engine.

pen the bonnet and secure it with the stay.

pen the screenwash reservoir filler cap.

ake and pinch the level gauge to block its
breather.

emove the gauge completely from the
reser voir to read the level in the transparent
section.

efit the filler cap to the reser voir and close
the bonnet.
Fluid specifications
For optimum cleaning and to avoid freezing,
this fluid must not be topped up or replaced
with plain water.
In wintry conditions, using an ethyl alcohol or
methanol based fluid is recommended.
Diesel fuel additive level
(Diesel with particle filter)
According to your version of instrument panel,
the additive reser voir low level is indicated by:
Topping up
This additive must be topped up without
delay by a member of the dealer network or a
qualified workshop. -

Checks
Unless otherwise indicated, check these
components in accordance with the
manufacturer's service schedule and according
to your engine. .
Otherwise, have them checked by the dealer
network or a qualified workshop.
12 V battery
The battery does not require any
maintenance.
However, check regularly that the
terminals are correctly tightened
(versions without quick release terminals)
and that the connections are clean.
For more information on the precautions
to take before starting work on the 12 V
battery , refer to the corresponding
section.
Versions equipped with Stop & Start are
fitted with a 12 V lead-acid battery of
specific technology and specification.
Its replacement should be carried out
only in the dealer network or a qualified
workshop.
