Selective catalytic
reduction (AdBlue/DEF)
General information
Applies to: vehicles with selective catalytic reduct ion
In vehicles with selective catalytic reduction, a
urea solution (AdBlue/DE F) is injected into the
exhaust system in front of a nitrogen oxide cata l ytic converter to reduce nitrogen em issions. The
urea solution is known as Ad Blue or DEF (Diesel
Exhaust Flu id) . The informat ion that fo llows w ill
u se the name Ad B lue .
The Ad Blue is carried in a separate tank in the ve
hicle. The Ad Blue usage accounts for approxi
mately 1.0% to 4.0% of the diesel fuel that is
u sed.
When a message about refilling the AdBlue ap pears in the instrument cluster display, you must
refill the Ad B lue yourse lf or have it refilled by an
authorized Aud i dea ler or authorized Audi Serv ice

The Ad Blue tank ope ning is located near the d ie

AdB lue shown in the instrument cluster display.
This is the minimum amount required to ensure
the system detects the refilling and to start the
engine. You can add a maximum of 6.3 gallons
(24 L).
Requirement: the request to add Ad Bl ue must
appear in the instrument cluster display.

A WARNING ,~ -Ad B lue can irritate the s kin, eyes and respira
tory sys tem.
If th ere is contact with t he flu id,
flus h immed iate ly w ith plenty of wa ter. Con
su lt a phys icia n if necessary .
(D Note
- Only use Ad Blue that conforms to the
standard ISO 22241-1. Do not m ix any addi
tives with the Ad Blue and do not dilu te it
w ith wate r.
- Do not add AdBl ue to the diesel tank or add
diese l fuel to t he A d Bl ue tank. Do not s tart
t he engine un de r any c ircumst ances if th e
wrong fuel is filled in the tan k. There is a

risk of damaging the fuel tank system and
the engine. See an authorized Audi dealer or
authorized Audi Service Facility for assis
tance.
- Ad Blue attacks surfaces such as painted ve
hicle components, plastic and carpet. Re
move the fluid as quickly as possible with a
damp cloth and plenty of cold water. If the
Ad Blue has already crystallized, use warm
water and a sponge . AdBlue residue that is
not removed will crystallize and can damage
the affected surface.
- Do not store refill bottles or canisters per
manently in the vehicle. If the container
leaks, the escaping AdBlue could damage
the vehicle interior.
- Do not allow AdBlue to come into contact
with clothing. If there is contact with the
fluid, flush immediately with plenty of wa
ter.

systems
Catalytic con verter
Applies to: vehicles with gasoline engines
T he vehicle may only be driven with un leaded
gasoline, otherwise the catalytic converter will be
destroyed.
Never drive until the tank is compl ete ly empty .
The irregu lar supply of fuel that resu lts from that
can cause eng ine misfires. Uncombusted fuel will
enter the exhaust system, which can cause over
heating and damage to the catalytic converter .
Diesel particulate filt er
Applies to: vehicles with diesel engines
The diese l particu late filter filters near ly all of
the soot particles out of the exhaust. The filter
cleans itself automatically under norma l driving
condit ions. If the filter cannot clean itself (for ex
ample, because you are only driving short distan
ces), the filter becomes clogged with soot and

- Never tou ch the e xhaust tail pipes once they
have become hot. This cou ld res ult in burns .
- Do not par k your veh icle over flamm ab le

the high temperature of the emissions con trol system (catalytic converter or diesel particu late filter) cou ld start a fire.
-Do not app ly underbody protectant in the

Bulbs
Replacing light bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace any bulbs for
you.
It is becoming increasing ly more and more diff i
cult to replace vehicle light bulbs s ince in many
cases, othe r parts of the car must fi rst be re
moved before you are able to get to the bu lb .
This applies especially to the light bulbs in the
front of your car which you can only reach
through the engine compartment.
Sheet metal and bulb ho lders can have sharp
edges that can cause serious cuts, parts must be
correct ly taken apart and then properly put back
together to he lp prevent breakage of parts and

long term damage from water that can enter
housings that have not been properly resealed.
Fo r you r safety, we recommend that you have
you r autho rized Audi dea ler replace any bulbs for
you, since your dealer has the proper tools, the
correct bu lbs and the expertise.
Ga s di sc harg e la mp s (Xe non ligh ts):
Due to the h igh electr ical voltage, have the bulbs
rep laced by a qualified technician . Headlights
with Xenon light a re identified by the high volt
age sticker.
L ED headlight s*
LED headlights require no maintenance. Please
contact your authorized Audi dealer if a bulb
needs to be replaced.
A WARNING
Changing Xenon lamps without the necessary
equipment can cause serious personal injury.
-Bulbs are pressurized and can explode when
be ing changed. Potent ial r isk of injury!
- On veh icles equipped with gas discharge
bulbs (Xenon light) life-threatening injuries
can result from improper handling of the
high-vo ltage portions of such lamps!
-Only your authorized Audi dealer or quali
fied workshop shou ld change the bulbs in
gas discharge lamps . There are parts with
sharp edges on the openings and on the bulb holders that can cause serious cuts. If
you are uncerta in about what to do, have
the work performed by an authorized Audi
dea ler or qualified workshop. Serious per
sonal injury may result from improperly per
formed work.
(D Tips
-If you still prefer to replace the light bulbs
yourself, be aware that the engine compart
