Loading specifications Properly loading your vehicle will provide maxi- mum return of vehicle design performance.
Weight designations
Before loading your vehicle, familiarize yourself with the following terms for determining yourvehicle's weight ratings, with or without a trailer,from the vehicle's Federal/Canadian Motor Vehi-cle Safety Standards (FMVSS/CMVSS) label, andthe vehicle's tire information placard:
Curb weight
The weight of the vehicle including a full tank of fuel and all standard equipment. It does notinclude passengers, cargo, or optional equipment.
Capacity weight
All weight added to the curb weight, including cargo and optional equipment. When towing,trailer hitch tongue load is also part of cargoweight.
Permissible axle weight
The maximum allowable weight that can be car- ried by a single axle (front or rear). These num-bers are shown on the Federal/Canadian MotorVehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS/CMVSS) label.The total load on each axle must never exceed itsmaximum permissible weight.
Gross vehicle weight (GVW)
The vehicle's curb weight + cargo + passengers.
Steps for Determining Correct Load Limit
1. Locate the statement "the combined weightof occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs." on your vehicle's plac-ard.
2. Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers that will be riding in yourvehicle.
3. Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from XXX kg or XXX lbs.
4. The resulting figure equals the available amount of cargo and luggage load capacity.For example, if the "XXX" amount equals1400 lbs. and there will be five 150 lb. pas-sengers in your vehicle, the amount of availa-ble cargo and luggage load capacity is650 lbs. (1400 – 750 (5 × 150) = 650 lbs.)
5. Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle. Thatweight may not safely exceed the availablecargo and luggage load capacity calculatedin Step 4.
6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be transferred to yourvehicle. Consult this manual to determinehow this reduces the available cargo and lug-gage load capacity of your vehicle.
WARNING
• Exceeding the permissible axle weight, gross vehicle weight, or any other weightrating limits can cause tire overheatingresulting in permanent deformation orcatastrophic failure.
• Do not use replacement tires with lowerload carrying capacities than the tires thatwere original equipment on the vehiclebecause this will lower the vehicle's GVWrating. Use only tires with the correct loadcarrying capacity. Consult your Volvoretailer for information.

The Federal Clean Air Act – U.S.
The Federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle manu- facturers to furnish written instructions to the ulti-mate purchaser to assure the proper servicingand function of the components that controlemissions. These services, which are listed in the"Warranty and Service Records Information"booklet, are not covered by the warranty. You willbe required to pay for labor and material used.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspections before it was delivered to you, in accordance withVolvo specifications. The maintenance proce-dures outlined in the Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet, many of which willpositively affect your vehicle's emissions, shouldbe performed as indicated. It is recommendedthat receipts for vehicle emission maintenance beretained in case questions arise concerning maintenance. Inspection and maintenance shouldalso be performed anytime a malfunction isobserved or suspected.

In accordance with applicable U.S. and Canadian regulations, the following list of warranties is pro-vided.

Periodic maintenance helps minimize emissions

This program contains inspectionsand services necessary for the properfunction of your vehicle and includescomponents that affect vehicle emis-sions.
• The Warranty and Service Records Infor-mation booklet also contains detailedinformation concerning the warrantiesthat apply to your vehicle.
On-board Diagnostic SystemOBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. It stores diagnosticinformation about your vehicle's emission con-trols. It can light the Check Engine light (MIL) if itdetects an emission control "fault." A "fault" is acomponent or system that is not performingwithin an expected range. A fault may be perma-nent or temporary. OBD II will store a messageabout any fault.

WARNING
In certain models, the battery is held in place by a strap. Ensure that this strap is alwayssecurely fastened and pulled taut.
• When replacing the start battery an Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) must be used.
• When replacing the start battery, a new bat-tery with the same specifications and dimen-sions must be used. The battery should onlybe replaced by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.

Hybrid battery
The vehicle's electric motor is powered by a rechargeable, maintenance-free, lithium-ionhybrid battery.
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybrid battery is completely discharged.
WARNING
The vehicle's hybrid battery may only be serv- iced or replaced by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
Battery coolantThe hybrid battery's cooling system has its own expansion tank.
Filling the hybrid battery's cooling system should only be done by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.

Removing the rectangular headlight cover
Most of the bulbs in the headlight housing can be accessed when the rectangular cover hasbeen removed.
Before the rectangular cover can be removed, the plastic covering must be removed, see the article"Replacing bulbs" for information.
1. Loosen the cover's four screws with a T20 Torx screwdriver (1) but do not remove them completely (turning them 3–4 turns isenough).
2. Push the cover to the side.
3. Remove the cover.Put the cover back in place in the reverse order.
4 Must be replaced by a trained and qualified Volvo service technician.

Replacing low beam headlight bulbs
On models with halogen headlights, the low beam headlight bulb can be replaced by theowner.
Before the bulb can be replaced, the plastic cov- ering over the headlight housing has to be removed, see the article "Replacing bulbs."
CAUTION
Never touch the glass of bulbs with your fin- gers. Grease and oils from your fingers vapor-ize in the heat and will leave a deposit on thereflector, which will damage it.

1. Remove the low beam round rubber cover from the headlight housing. 2. Remove the connector from the bulb.
3. Remove the bulb by pressing it slightly
upward and then pulling it out.
4. Insert the bulb in the socket. The bulb's guid- ing pin should point straight up.
5. Press the connector into place.
6. Put the rubber cover back into place.

Replacing High Beam headlight bulbs
On models with halogen headlights, the High Beam headlight bulb can be replaced by theowner.
Before the bulb can be accessed, the headlight housing's rectangular cover must be removed,see the article "Removing the rectangular head-light cover."
CAUTION

1. Remove the bulb by turning the bulb holder upward and then pulling it straight out.
2. Carefully pry the plastic sleeve by the con- nector's locking lug to release it.
3. Remove the connector from the bulb.
4. Insert a new bulb.
5. Insert the bulb in the socket and turn it downward.

Replacing front turn signal bulbs On models with halogen headlights, the front turn signal bulb can be replaced by the owner.
Before the bulb can be accessed, the headlight housing's rectangular cover must be removed,see the article "Removing the rectangular head-light cover."

1. Press the retaining catches together and pull
the bulb holder straight out.
2. The bulb holder and bulb must be replaced as one unit.
3. Press the new bulb holder into the socket.

Replacing front parking light bulbs
On models with halogen headlights, the front parking light bulb can be replaced by the owner.
Before the bulb can be accessed, the headlight housing's rectangular cover must be removed,see the article "Removing the rectangular head-light cover." Remove the high beam bulb first by turning the bulb holder upward and then pulling it straightout. This makes it easier to access the parkinglight bulb.

2. Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out.
3. Insert a new bulb.
4. Insert the bulb holder in the socket and press it into place. 5. If the high beam bulb was removed, insert
the bulb in the socket and turn downward.
