Tunnel console The tunnel console is located between the front seats.
Storage compartment (for CDs, etc.) under armrest, AUX input/USB connector.
Includes cup holder for driver and passenger, 12-volt socket (p. 136) and a small storagecompartment.

Tunnel console – 12-volt sockets
The electrical sockets can be used for 12-volt accessories such as cell phone chargers andcoolers. For the socket to supply current, theignition must be in at least mode I (p. 74). The
sockets are located between the cup holders inthe tunnel console and on the rear side of thetunnel console (p. 136) for rear seat passen-gers.

The maximum current consumption is 10A (120W) if only one of the 12-volt sockets in thepassenger compartment is in use. If both thefront and rear sockets are used at the same time,the maximum current consumption per socket is7.5A (90W). The auxiliary sockets can also be used to power a cigarette lighter. Accessory cigarette lighters andashtrays can be purchased from your Volvoretailer.

Loading – general
The load carrying capacity of your vehicle is determined by factors such as the number ofpassengers, the amount of cargo, the weight ofany accessories that may be installed, etc.
To increase loading space, the rear seat back- rests can be folded down, see Rear seats – fold-
ing backrest (p. 81).
When loading the trunk, keep the following in
mind:
The trunk lid can be unlocked an pop-ped open slightly via the button locatedon the lighting panel, see Locking/
unlocking – trunk (p. 160).
• Load objects in the trunk against the back- rest whenever possible.
• Unstable loads can be secured to the loadanchoring eyelets with straps or web lash-ings to help keep them from shifting.
• Stop the engine and apply the parking brakewhen loading or unloading long objects. Thegear selector can be knocked out of positionby long loads, which could set the vehicle inmotion.

• The vehicle's driving characteristics may change depending on the weight and dis-tribution of the load.
• A 44-pound (20 kg) object produces aforce of 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) in ahead-on collision at 30 mph (50 km/h).
• The rear seat should not be loaded to alevel higher than 2 in. (5 cm) below theupper edge of the rear side windows.Objects placed higher than this levelcould impede the function of the VolvoInflatable Curtain.

Ski hatch
There is a hatch in the right section of the rear seat backrest that can be opened for transport-ing long objects.

Fold the right backrest forward.
Release the hatch in the rear seat backrest by sliding the catch up while folding thehatch forward.
Return the backrest to the upright position with the hatch open.
Use the seat belt to prevent the load from mov-ing.
WARNING
• Always secure the load to help prevent it from moving in the event of sudden brak-ing.
• Switch off the engine, apply the parking brake and put the gear selector in
P
when loading and unloading the vehicle.
The cover on the rear seat armrest/child seat has no hinge. The cover must be removed before theski hatch is used. Removal:
–Open the cover 30 degrees and lift straight up.
Installation:
–Insert the cover in the grooves behind the upholstery and close the cover.

Loading – roof load carriers
Using load carriersLoad carriers are available as Volvo accessories. Observe the following points when in use:
• To avoid damaging your vehicle and toachieve maximum safety when driving, werecommend using the load carriers that Volvohas developed especially for your vehicle.
• Volvo-approved removable roof racks aredesigned to carry the maximum allowableroof load for this vehicle: 220 lbs (100 kg).For non-Volvo roof racks, check the manu-facturer's weight limits for the rack.
• Never exceed the rack manufacturer's weighlimits and never exceed the maximum ratedroof load of 220 lbs (100 kg).
• Avoid single-point loads. Distribute loadsevenly.
• Place heavier cargo at the bottom of theload.
• Secure the cargo correctly with appropriatetie-down equipment.
• Check periodically that the load carriers andload are properly secured.
• Remember that the vehicle's center of gravityand handling change when you carry a loadon the roof.

The vehicle's wind resistance and fuel con- sumption will increase with the size of theload.
• Drive smoothly. Avoid rapid starts, fast cor-nering and hard braking.

Load anchoring eyelets
The load anchoring eyelets on both sides of the vehicle are used to fasten straps, etc., to helpanchor items in the trunk.

The two upper hooks shown in the illustration are for holding grocery bags only. They are not intended for anchoring heavy objects.

• Cover sharp edges on long loads to help prevent injury to occupants. Secure theload to help prevent shifting during sud-den stops.
• Always secure large and heavy objectswith a seat belt or cargo retaining straps.
• Always secure the load to help prevent itfrom moving in the event of sudden stops.

Remote key and key blade
Two remote keys are provided with your vehicle. They enable you to unlock the doors and trunk,and also function as ignition keys to start thevehicle or operate electrical components. Theremote keys contain detachable metal keyblades for manually locking or unlocking the driv-er's door and the glove compartment. The visibleends of these key blades are unique to make iteasier to identify "your" remote key. Up to sixremotes can be programmed for use on thesame vehicle.
WARNING
Never leave the remote key in the ignition slot if children are to remain in the vehicle.

Remote key – loss
If either of the remote keys (p. 144) is lost, the other should be taken with the vehicle to a Volvoretailer. As an anti-theft measure, the code of thelost remote key must be erased from the system.

Additional or duplicate remote control keys can be obtained from any authorized Volvoretailer. You can also obtain additional or duplicate remote control keys from certain independentrepair facilities and locksmiths that are quali-fied to make remote control keys. Each keymust be programmed to work with your vehi-cle. WARNING
People with implanted pacemakers should not allow the pacemaker to come closer than9 inches (22 cm) to any of the keyless drivesystem's antennas. This is to help preventinterference between the pacemaker and thekeyless drive system.

Locking/unlocking – from the outside
The remote key (p. 144) is used to lock/unlock all of the doors and the trunk at the same time.Different settings for unlocking the vehicle canbe selected, see Remote key – functions(p. 147). Before the vehicle can be locked from the out- side with the remote key, the driver's door mustbe closed. If the trunk or any other door is open,it will be locked and the alarm will be armed.
NOTE
Be sure the remote key is outside of the vehi- cle before the other doors/trunk are closed tohelp avoid locking the remote inside the vehi-cle.
If the vehicle is equipped with the optional key- less drive system, all doors/trunk must be closedbefore the vehicle can be locked. The first press on the unlock button unlocks the driver's door and a second press unlocks theother doors and the trunk (see also remote keyand key blade (p. 144)). This setting can be changed in the menu system. See MY
CAR (p. 71) for a description.
If the locks repeatedly do not react when the unlock button is pressed, it may be necessary toreplace the battery in the remote, see Remote key – replacing the battery (p. 151). In this casethe vehicle can be unlocked with the detachablekey blade (p. 150).

Opening the trunk manually
The trunk is held closed by an electronic locking mechanism. To open:
1. Press lightly on the rubberized plate underthe handle to release the lock.
2. Lift the handle to open the trunk lid.
CAUTION
• When pressing the rubberized plate, only light pressure is necessary to release thetrunk's electronic locking mechanism.
• When opening the trunk lid, pull it upusing the handle. Too much pressure onthe rubberized plate can damage its elec-trical connections.
Locking the trunk with the remote key
–Press the lock button on the remote key. The alarm indicator on the dashboard will begin flashing to show that the vehicle is locked andthat the alarm has been armed.
NOTE
•
If the doors are locked while the trunk is open, the trunk will remain unlocked untilthe vehicle is relocked by pressing theLock button on the remote key.
• On keyless drive vehicles, the gear selec- tor must be in the Park (
P) position, all
doors and the trunk must be closed and the ignition must be switched off beforethe vehicle can be locked.
Opening the trunk from the inside (U.S. models only)
The vehicle is equipped with a florescent handle on the inside of the trunk lid, which can be usedin an emergency situation to open the trunk fromthe inside. Pull the handle down to release thetrunk lid. After use, the handle must be pushedback into its original position before the trunk canbe closed. This handle is not intended to be used to anchor the trunk lid when long loads are being transpor-ted.

Alarm – general information
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle. The alarm is automatically armed (p. 163) whenever the vehicle is locked with the remotekey. When armed, the alarm continuously monitors a number of points on the vehicle. The followingconditions will trigger the alarm:
• The hood is forced open.
• The trunk is forced open
• A door is forced open.
• The ignition slot is tampered with.
• An attempt is made to start the vehicle with a non-approved key (a key not coded to thecar's ignition).
• The battery is disconnected (while the alarmis armed).
• The siren is disconnected when the alarm isdisarmed.
A message will appear in the information displayif a fault should occur in the alarm system. Con-tact a trained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
NOTE
Do not attempt to repair any of the compo- nents in the alarm system yourself. This couldaffect the insurance policy on the vehicle.

Alarm indicator
The status of the alarm system is indicated by the red indicator light on the dashboard (seeillustration):
• Indicator light off: the alarm is not armed (p. 163)
• The indicator light flashes at one-secondintervals: the alarm is armed
• The indicator light flashes rapidly before theremote key is inserted in the ignition slot and the ignition is put in mode
I: the alarm has
been triggered.
