Changing a wheel – spare wheel Wheel changes should always be carried out correctly.
Spare tireA spare tire can be purchased for your vehicle as an accessory. Follow the instructions includedwith the spare tire regarding use and stowing inthe vehicle. See also Changing a wheel – remov-ing wheel (p. 295) for additional information.
Spare wheelThe following instructions only apply if you have purchased a temporary spare wheel * for your
vehicle. If there is no temporary spare wheel in your vehi- cle, please see Tire sealing system * – general
information (p. 316) for instructions on using the tire sealing system. The accessory temporary spare wheel is provided in a bag that must be securely strapped in placein the trunk while the vehicle is being driven. The spare wheel is only intended for temporary use. Replace it with a normal wheel as soon aspossible. The vehicle's handling may be alteredby the use of the spare wheel. The correct tirepressure is stated in the tire pressure table, seethe tire inflation decal on the driver's door open-ing.Turn the handle on the spare wheel bag in toward the rear seat. Secure the stitched straphooks in the loading eyelets. Secure the longstrap in one of the loading eyelets, wrap the straparound the spare wheel and through the lowerhandle. Secure the short strap on the long strap.Secure in the other loading eyelet and tighten.
WARNING
Current legislation prohibits the use of the “Temporary Spare” tire other than as a tempo-rary replacement for a punctured tire. It mustbe replaced as soon as possible by a stand-ard tire. Road holding and handling may beaffected with the “Temporary Spare” in use.
CAUTION
The vehicle must never be driven with more than one temporary spare wheel.

Changing a wheel – accessing the spare wheel
The following procedure explains how to access the spare wheel (where applicable).
1. Release the bag's retaining straps.
2. Lift the bag out of the vehicle and remove the spare wheel from the bag.
3. Fold up the floor hatch in the trunk.4. Remove the jack * and tools * from the foam
block and change the wheels (see the instructions in the following section "Chang-ing a wheel").
5. After changing wheels, return the jack and tools to the foam block and close the floorhatch.
6. If possible, place the wheel with the punc- tured tire in the bag. 7. If there is a wheel in the bag, strap the bag
securely in place in the trunk.
WARNING
•If there is a wheel in the bag, the bag must be securely restrained using its straps andthe load anchoring eyelets in the trunk.See (p. 298) and carefully follow theinstructions.
• If the wheel with the punctured tire is toobig to fit in the bag, it should be securelyrestrained in the trunk using suitablestraps, a net for anchoring cargo, etc.
Changing a wheel – installing a wheel
It is important to re-install wheels properly.
Re-installing the wheel1. Clean the contact surfaces on the wheel and hub.
2. Lift the wheel and place it on the hub.
Tighten the wheel nuts
3. Install the wheel nuts and tighten hand-tight. Using the lug wrench, tighten crosswise until all nuts are snug.
4. Lower the vehicle to the ground and alter- nately tighten the bolts crosswise to103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).

Tire inflationSee the tire inflation decal on the driver's door opening. This decal indicates the designation ofthe factory-mounted tires on your vehicle, as wellas load limits and inflation pressure.
NOTE
• The placards shown indicate inflation pressure for the tires installed on thevehicle at the factory only.
• A certain amount of air seepage from thetires occurs naturally and tire pressurefluctuates with seasonal changes in tem-perature. Always check tire pressure reg-ularly.
•Use a tire gauge to check the tire inflation pressure, including the spare 2
, at least once
a month and before long trips. You are strongly urged to buy a reliable tire pressuregauge, as automatic service station gaugesmay be inaccurate.
• Use the recommended cold inflation pres-sure for optimum tire performance and wear.
• Under-inflation or over-inflation may causeuneven treadwear patterns.

WARNING
•Under-inflation is the most common cause of tire failure and may result insevere tire cracking, tread separation, or"blow-out," with unexpected loss of vehi-cle control and increased risk of injury.
• Under-inflated tires reduce the load car-rying capacity of your vehicle.
When weather temperature changes occur, tire inflation pressures also change. A 10-degreetemperature drop causes a corresponding dropof 1 psi (7 kPa) in inflation pressure. Check yourtire pressures frequently and adjust them to theproper pressure, which can be found on the vehi-cle's tire information placard or certification label.

Tire inflation – checking pressure
Inflation pressure should be checked when the tires are cold.
Cold tires
The tires are considered to be cold when they have the same temperature as the sur-rounding (ambient) air. This temperature is normally reached after the vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours. After driving a distance of approximately 1 mile (1.6 km), the tires are considered to be hot. If youhave to drive farther than this distance to pumpyour tire(s), check and record the tire pressurefirst and add the appropriate air pressure whenyou get to the pump. If checking tire pressure when the tire is hot, never "bleed" or reduce air pressure. The tiresare hot from driving and it is normal for pressuresto increase above recommended cold pressures.A hot tire at or below recommended cold inflationpressure could be significantly under-inflated.
To check inflation pressure:
1. Remove the cap from the valve on one tire, then firmly press the tire gauge onto the valve.
2. Add air to reach the recommended air pres- sure. 3. Replace the valve cap.
CAUTION
•
After inflating the tires, always reinstall the valve cap to help avoid damage to thevalve from dirt, gravel, etc.
• Use plastic valve caps only. Metal capscould corrode and become difficult toremove.
4. Visually inspect the tires to make sure there
are no nails or other objects embedded that could puncture the tire and cause an air leak.
5. Check the sidewalls to make sure there are no gouges, cuts, bulges or other irregulari-ties.
6. Repeat this procedure for each tire, including the spare 3
.
NOTE
• If you overfill the tire, release air by push- ing on the metal stem in the center of thevalve. Then recheck the pressure withyour tire gauge.
• Some spare tires (available as an acces-sory) require higher inflation pressurethan the other tires. Consult the tire infla-

system that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale (
) when one or more of your tires is signifi-
cantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you should stopand check your tires as soon as possible, andinflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire cau- ses the tire to overheat and can lead to tire fail-ure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiencyand tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle'shandling and stopping ability. Please note that atire pressure monitoring system is not a substi-tute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driv-er's responsibility to maintain correct tire pres-sure, even if under-inflation has not reached thelevel to trigger illumination of the system's lowtire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when thesystem is not operating properly. The monitoringsystem's malfunction indicator is combined withthe low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the tell- tale will flash for approximately one minute andthen remain continuously illuminated. Thissequence will continue upon subsequent vehiclestart-ups as long as the malfunction exists. Whenthe malfunction indicator is illuminated, the sys-tem may not be able to detect or signal low tirepressure as intended. System malfunctions may occur for a variety ofreasons, including the installation of replacementor alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle thatprevent the tire pressure monitoring system fromfunctioning properly. Always check the system's malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels onyour vehicle to ensure that the replacement oralternate tires and wheels allow the system tocontinue to function properly.
NOTE
The system indicates low tire pressure but does not replace normal tire maintenance. Forinformation on correct tire pressure, pleaserefer to the tire inflation decal on the driver'sdoor opening or consult your Volvo retailer.
WARNING
Incorrect inflation pressure could lead to tire failure, resulting in a loss of control of thevehicle.

Tire Monitor - introduction Tire Monitor uses the rotational speed of the tires in combination with signal analysis of theABS sensor signals to determine if they areproperly inflated.
When a tire is under-inflated, its diameter (and consequently also its rotational speed) changes.By comparing the individual tires with each otherit is possible to determine if one or more tires areunder inflated. When low inflation pressure is detected or if the system is not functioning properly, Tire Monitorwill light up the tire pressure warning light (
) (also referred to as a telltale) in the
instrument panel and will display one of several messages in the text window, for example:

pressure and recalibrate if necessary.
NOTE
If a malfunction occurs in the system, the tire pressure warning light will flash for approxi-mately 1 minute and then remain illuminated.

Calibrating Tire Monitor In order for Tire Monitor to work correctly, tire pressure reference values must be set. Thismust be done each time wheels or tire pressuresare changed.
Calibration1. Switch off the engine.
2. Inflate the tires to the desired pressure (con-
sult tire pressure placard located on the driv- er's side B-pillar (the structural member atthe side of the vehicle) and put the ignition in mode II, see Ignition modes (p. 74).
3. Press the MY CAR button on the center
console control panel and select

4. Press OK/MENU , select
Calibrate tire
pressure and press OK/MENU again after
all of the tires have been checked and rein- flated.
5. Drive away. > The calibration process will be completedwhile driving and will be interrupted if thevehicle is parked and the engine isswitched off. Calibration continues auto-matically when driving resumes. The sys-tem will not give any confirmation whencalibration is finished although it will stateif calibration fails. When driving with heavy loads or at sustainedhighway speeds, the tire pressure should beadjusted to the recommended inflation pressuresaccording to the tire inflation pressure placardlocated on the driver's side B-pillar (the structuralmember at the side of the vehicle, at the rear ofthe driver's door opening) or to the tire inflationpressure table in the owner's information. After adjusting inflation pressure, repeat steps 1-5 above.
NOTE
Always remember to calibrate Tire Monitor when the wheels have been changed or thetire pressure has been corrected according totire pressure placard or tire pressure table. Ifcorrect reference values have not been set,the system cannot issue low tire pressurealerts correctly.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) – changing wheels
Please keep the following in mind when chang- ing or replacing the factory installed TPMSwheels/tires on the vehicle:
• Not all aftermarket wheels are equipped withTPMS sensors in the valves.
• If the vehicle is equipped with a temporaryspare tire, this tire does not have a TPMSsensor.
• If wheels without TPMS sensors are moun-ted on the vehicle, a text message will dis-played in the instrument panel each time thevehicle is driven above 20 mph (30 km/h) for10 minutes or more.
• Once TPMS sensors are properly installed,the warning message should not reappear. Ifthe message is still displayed, drive the vehi-cle for several minutes at a speed of 20 mph(30 km/h) or faster to erase the message.
• Volvo recommends that TPMS sensors befitted on all wheels used on the vehicle,including winter tires. Volvo does not recom-mend moving sensors back and forthbetween sets of wheels.
CAUTION
When inflating tires, press the pump's mouth- piece straight onto the valve to help avoidbending or otherwise damaging the valve.
CAUTION
•After inflating the tires, always reinstall the valve cap to help avoid damage to thevalve from dirt, gravel, etc.
• Use plastic valve caps only. Metal capscould corrode and become difficult toremove.
NOTE
•
If you change to tires with a different dimension than the factory-installed ones,the TPMS system must be reconfiguredfor these tires. This must be done by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
• If a tire is changed, or if the TPMS sensoris moved to another wheel, the sensor'sseal, nut, and valve core should bereplaced.
• When installing TPMS sensors, the vehi-cle must be parked for at least15 minutes with the ignition off. If thevehicle is driven within 15 minutes, aTPMS error message will be displayed.

•If Oil service required is displayed, the
oil level may be too high. Take the vehicle to an authorized Volvo workshop as soonas possible.
• If the oil level sensor indicates that thelevel is too low, using the correct oil, topup with the amount of oil indicated assoon as possible, see oil specifica-tions (p. 376).
WARNING
Do not allow oil to spill onto or come into con- tact with hot exhaust pipe surfaces.
Electronically checking the oil level
The oil level should be checked at regular inter- vals, particularly during the period up to the firstscheduled maintenance service. To check the oil level:1.
Activate ignition mode II, see Ignition modes
(p. 74).
2. Turn the thumb wheel on the left steering wheel lever until
Oil level is displayed.
> The oil level will be displayed.
NOTE
• The system cannot detect changes in the oil level immediately. The vehicle must bedriven approximately 20 miles (30 km) orhave been parked on level ground withthe engine off for 5 minutes before theoil level reading will be correct.
• If the necessary conditions are not metfor checking the oil level electronically(time interval after the engine wasswitched off, if the vehicle is parked on an incline, etc.),
No values available will
be displayed. This does not indicate a
problem with the oil level sensor.
Engine compartment – coolant
Normally, the coolant does not need to be changed. If the system must be drained, consulta trained and qualified Volvo service technician.
