Air distribution – recirculation Recirculation can be used to shut out exhaust fumes, smoke, etc., from the passenger com-partment.
The air in the passenger com- partment is then recirculated,i.e., no air from outside the caris taken into the car when thisfunction is activated. The indi-cator light in the button will illu-minate when recirculation is
selected. If the air in the car recirculates for too long, there is a risk of condensation forming on the insidesof the windows, especially in winter.
TimerThe timer function minimizes the risk of fogging, or stale air when the recirculation function isselected by automatically switching off the func-tion after a certain length of time, depending onthe ambient temperature. Activate/deactivate the function under
Climate settingsRecirculation timer. See My Car – introduction
(p. 71) for a description of the menu system.
NOTE
When Defroster is selected, recirculation is always deactivated.

Using load carriersLoad carriers are available as Volvo accessories. Observe the following points when in use:
• To avoid damaging your vehicle and toachieve maximum safety when driving, werecommend using the load carriers that Volvohas developed especially for your vehicle.
• Volvo-approved removable roof racks aredesigned to carry the maximum allowableroof load for this vehicle: 220 lbs (100 kg).For non-Volvo roof racks, check the manu-facturer's weight limits for the rack.
• Never exceed the rack manufacturer's weighlimits and never exceed the maximum ratedroof load of 220 lbs (100 kg).
• Avoid single-point loads. Distribute loadsevenly.
• Place heavier cargo at the bottom of theload.
• Secure the cargo correctly with appropriatetie-down equipment.
• Check periodically that the load carriers andload are properly secured.
• Remember that the vehicle's center of gravityand handling change when you carry a loadon the roof.

Active chassis * (Four C)
Active chassis, Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept), regulates the characteristicsof the shock absorbers so that the vehicle's driv-ing characteristics can be adjusted. There arethree settings: Comfort, Sport and Advanced.
Operation
Chassis settings
Use the buttons in the center console to change setting. The setting in use when the engine isswitched off is activated the next time the engineis started.
Comfort
Comfort mode offers a somewhat softer ride and the transmission shifts gears at lower rpm. Thismode is particularly suitable for long-distancehighway driving. The indicator light in the buttonwill be on when this mode is selected.
Sport
In this mode, the vehicle's body sway is reduced during cornering and steering response is moreimmediate. The transmission shifts up at higherrpm for sportier driving. The indicator light in thebutton will be on to indicate that Sport mode hasbeen selected.
Advanced
In this mode, body sway in curves is minimal and steering response is very direct. Gear shifting isdone at high rpm in each gear for dynamic andactive driving.

Stability system – introduction The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system consists of a number of functions designed tohelp reduce wheel spin, counteract skidding andto generally help improve directional stability.
A pulsating sound will be audible when the system is actively operating and isnormal. Acceleration will also beslightly slower than normal.
WARNING
ESC is a supplementary aid and cannot deal with all situations or road conditions. The driver is always responsible for operating the vehicle in a safe manner in accordancewith current traffic regulations.
ESC consists of the following functions: • Traction control
• Spin control
• Active Yaw Control
• Engine Drag Control
• Corner Traction Control
Traction Control (TC)
This function is designed to help reduce wheel spin at low speeds by transferring power from adrive wheel that begins to lose traction to thewheel on the opposite side of the vehicle (on thesame axle).

Select Low, Medium or High. For a description
of the menu system, My Car – introduction (p. 71).
NOTE
This steering force level menu function can- not be accessed when the vehicle is inmotion.
NOTE
In certain situations, the power steering may become too warm and will have to be tempo-rarily cooled down. While this is happening, the power steering effect will be reducedslightly and somewhat more effort may berequired to turn the steering wheel. If this occurs, a message will be displayed in the instrument panel.

Adaptive Cruise Control – introductionACC is an optional system designed to assist the driver by maintaining a set speed or a settime interval to the vehicle ahead. It is primarilyintended for use on long straight roads in steadytraffic, such as on highways and other mainroads.
When the driver has set the desired speed and the time interval to the vehicle ahead, ACC func-tions as follows:
• If there are no other vehicles in the laneahead of you, your vehicle will travel at theset speed.
• If ACC's radar sensor detects a slower mov-ing vehicle in the lane ahead, the system willadapt your vehicle's speed to help maintainthe set time interval to the vehicle ahead. When there are no longer slower movingvehicles ahead, your vehicle will accelerate toresume the set speed.
If ACC is switched off completely or in standbymode and your vehicle comes too close toanother vehicle ahead, the driver will be warnedby the Distance Alert system (see Distance Alert– introduction (p. 191)).
WARNING
• Adaptive Cruise Control cannot cover all driving situations and traffic, weather androad conditions. The "Function" sectionprovides information about limitations thatthe driver must be aware of before usingthis feature.
• This system is designed to be a supple-mentary driving aid. It is not, however, intended to replace the driver's attentionand judgement. The driver is responsiblefor maintaining a safe distance and speedand must intervene if Adaptive CruiseControl does not maintain a suitablespeed or suitable distance to the vehicleahead.
• Maintenance of ACC components mayonly be performed by a trained and quali-fied Volvo technician.
