WARNING
After driving through water, mud, sludge, etc., the brakes react
slower and need longer stopping distances.
Always dry the brakes and clean off any ice coatings with a
few careful applications of the brake. Make sure not to endan-
ger other motorists or cyclists or disobey legal requirements.
Avoid abrupt or sudden braking maneuvers immediately after
driving through water.
NOTICE
Vehicle components such as the engine, transmission, sus-
pension or electrical system may be severely damaged by driv-
ing through water.
Never drive through salt water. Salt causes vehicle corrosion.
Thoroughly rinse with fresh water all vehicle parts that were ex-
posed to salt water.

WARNING
Improper use of vehicle keys can result in serious personal in-
jury.
Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. It
can be used to start the engine and operate vehicle systems
such as the power windows, leading to serious personal injury.
Children or other unauthorized persons could also lock the
doors and the luggage compartment.
Never leave children, disabled persons, or anyone who can-
not help themselves in the vehicle. The doors can be locked
with the remote control vehicle key. This could leave people
trapped in the vehicle in an emergency. Depending on the time
of year, people trapped in the vehicle can be exposed to very
high or very low temperatures.
A closed vehicle can become very hot or very cold, depend-
ing on the season. Particularly in the summer, heat buildup in
the passenger and luggage compartment of a parked vehicle
can result in temperatures in the vehicle that are much higher
than the outside temperatures. Temperatures can quickly reach
levels that can cause unconsciousness and death, particularly
to small children.
Never remove the key from the ignition switch while the vehi-
cle is moving or rolling to a stop. The steering wheel will lock
and you will not be able to steer or control the vehicle.

WARNING
When the child safety lock is engaged, that rear door cannot be
opened from the inside.
Never leave children, disabled persons, or anyone who can-
not help themselves, in the vehicle when locking the doors.
This could result in people being locked in the vehicle. This
could result in people being trapped in the vehicle in an emer-
gency. Depending on the time of year, people trapped in the
vehicle can be exposed to very high or very low temperatures.

Only open or close the luggage compartment lid if no one is

After closing the luggage compartment lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked so that it cannot open sud-
denly when the vehicle is moving. The closed luggage com-
partment lid must be flush with the surrounding auto body
parts.
Always keep the luggage compartment lid closed while driv-
ing to help keep poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into
the vehicle.
Never open the luggage compartment lid when a luggage
rack is installed and loaded. If, for example, there are bicycles
on a carrier on the luggage compartment lid, it is possible that
the lid will not be able to open automatically. An open luggage
compartment lid may fall on its own because of the additional
weight. If necessary, prop open the luggage compartment lid.
Remove the weight from the luggage rack first.
Close and lock the luggage compartment lid and all doors
when the vehicle is not in use. First, make sure that no one is
left inside the vehicle.
Never leave your vehicle unattended or let children play
around your vehicle, especially when the luggage compartment
lid is open. A child could crawl into the vehicle and pull the
luggage compartment lid shut, becoming trapped and unable to
get out. A closed vehicle can become very hot or very cold, de-

If the luggage compartment lid is not closed properly, it may
open suddenly when the vehicle is moving and cause severe
injuries.
Stop immediately and close the luggage compartment lid.
Always make sure the luggage compartment lid is securely
latched after you close it.

Unlocking and opening with the vehicle key
Press and hold the q button on the remote control vehicle key
⇒ fig. 33 A to unlatch and automatically open the luggage compart-
ment lid.
Unlocking and opening with the unlock switch in the driver door
Pull up the q switch on the driver door ⇒ fig. 33 B until the luggage
compartment lid opens automatically.
The switch in the driver door also works when the ignition is switched
off.
Unlocking and opening with the sensor-controlled luggage
compartment lid opener (Easy Open)
If your vehicle has Keyless Access, it may also be equipped with the
Easy Open feature. With Easy Open, the luggage compartment lid
can be opened with a motion sensor in the area below the rear
bumper ⇒ Sensor-controlled luggage compartment lid opener (Easy
Open).
Opening with the Volkswagen emblem
Unlock the vehicle or the luggage compartment lid, or open a door.
Using your thumb, press the top of the Volkswagen emblem
⇒ fig. 34 and move the top of the emblem down. The luggage com-
partment lid opens automatically.
WARNING
Improper or unsupervised unlocking or opening of the luggage
compartment lid can cause severe injuries. Never open the lug-
gage compartment lid when someone is in the way.
If a bicycle or luggage rack is installed on the luggage com-
partment lid, it may be hard to see that the luggage compart-
ment lid is unlatched. An unlatched luggage compartment lid
may open suddenly when the vehicle is moving.
At temperatures below +32 °F (0 °C), the luggage compartment
lid may not open automatically after you unlock it. It will be necessary
to lift it by hand.

The luggage compartment lid can also be locked manually with the
emergency key via the key switch in the driver door ⇒ Driver door
overview. When the luggage compartment lid has been locked manu-
ally with the emergency key, it cannot be opened using the q button
on the remote control vehicle key or the q switch inside the driver
door.

WARNING
Careless use of the Easy Open feature can cause falls and seri-
ous personal injury.
Always make sure you have firm footing when using the Easy
Open feature, and that the surface you are standing on is not
uneven or slippery.
Never use Easy Open feature unless you can use it safely.
CAUTION
If a valid vehicle key is within range of the luggage compart-
ment lid, the Easy Open feature can deploy unintentionally in
some cases and open the luggage compartment lid: for exam-
ple, when sweeping the ground or floor below the rear bumper,
if there is a strong stream of water or steam, or when carrying
out maintenance or repairs around the rear bumper. If the lug-
gage compartment lid opens unintentionally, it can injure any-
one or damage anything in its way.
Never leave a valid vehicle key within range of the luggage
compartment lid unattended.
Always turn off the Easy Open feature through the
Volkswagen Information System ⇒  Volkswagen Information
System in the following situations:
– Before carrying out any maintenance or repairs on the ve-
hicle.
– Before washing the vehicle.
– Before mounting a bicycle rack or connecting a trailer hitch
to the vehicle.
