Driving
With the headlights on, push
the lever away from you to turn
on the high beams.
Pull the lever toward you to the
center position to turn the high
beams off.
Pull the lever toward you and
release it to flash the high
beams once.
You can flash the high beams with the headlights on or off.
■Daytime running light system (if equipped)
●Vehicles with reflector type headlights: To make your vehicle more visible to
other drivers during daytime driving, the daytime running lights turn on auto-
matically whenever the engine is started and the parking brake is released
with the headlight switch off or in the position. (Illuminate dimmer
than the headlights.) Daytime running lights are not designed for use at
night.
For type C of this headlight, daytime running lights can be turned off by
operating the switch.
Vehicles with projector type headlights: To make your vehicle more visible
to other drivers during daytime driving, the daytime running lights turn on
automatically whenever the engine is started and the parking brake is
released with the headlight switch off or in the position. Daytime run-
ning lights are not designed for use at night.
For type C of this headlight, daytime running lights can be turned off by
operating the switch.
● Compared to turning on the headlights, the daytime running light system
offers greater durability and consumes less electricity, so it can help improve
fuel economy.

A buzzer sounds when the engine switch is turned to the “LOCK” or “ACC”
position and the driver’s door is opened while the lights are turned on.

1984-7. Driving tips
●Park the vehicle and move the shift lever to P (automatic transmis-
sion) or 1 or R (manual transmis sion) without setting the parking
brake. The parking brake may freeze up, preventing it from being
released. If the vehicl e is parked without setting the parking brake,
make sure to block the wheels.
Failure to do so may be dangerous because it may cause the vehi-
cle to move unexpectedly, leading to an accident.
● On vehicles with an automatic trans mission, if the vehicle is parked
without setting the parking brake, confirm that the shift lever cannot
be moved out of P.
The shift lever will be locked if it is attempted to be shifted from P to
any other position without depressing the brake pedal. If the shift
lever can be shifted from P, there may be a problem with the shift
lock system. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
Use the correct tire chain size when mounting the tire chains.
Chain size is regulated for each tire size.
Side chain
0.12 in. (3 mm) in diameter
Cross chain
0.16 in. (4 mm) in diameter
Regulations regarding the use of tire chains vary depending on loca-
tion and type of road. Al ways check local regulations before installing
chains.

flatbed truck, it should be tied
down at the locations shown in the
illustration.
After transporting, return the cov-
ers that were attached to the rear
side.
If you use chains or cables to tie
down your vehicle, the angles

Tighten down the towing eyelet
securely using a wheel nut
wrench or hard metal bar.
Securely attach cables or chains to the towing eyelet.
Take care not to damage the vehicle body.
Enter the vehicle being towed and start the engine.
If the engine does not start, turn the engine switch to the “ON” p\
osition.
Shift the shift lever to N and release the parking brake.
When the shift lever cannot be sh ifted (automatic transmission):

If the engine is not running, the power assist for the brakes and steering will
not function, making steering and braking more difficult.

If a warning light turns on or a warning
buzzer sounds
Calmly perform the following actions if any of the warning lights
comes on or flashes. If a light comes on or flashes, but then
goes off, this does not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the
system. However, if this continues to occur, have the vehicle
inspected by your Toyota dealer.

released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is fully
released, the system is operating normally.

Indicates a malfunction in the vehicle’s charging system.

the vehicle having reached a speed of 3 mph [5 km/h]).

*3: Open door warning buzzer: A buzzer will sound if the vehicle reaches a speed of 3 mph (5 km/h) or
more with any door open.
*4: Driver’s and front passenger’s seat belt buzzer: The driver’s and passenger’s seat belt buzzer sounds to alert the driver
and front passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. Once the
engine switch is turned to the “ON” or “START” position, the buzzer sounds
for 6 seconds. The buzzer sounds once if the driver’s or front passenger’s
seat belt is unfastened when the vehicle reaches a speed of 12 mph
(20 km/h). Then, if the seat belt is still unfastened after 30 seconds elapse,
the buzzer will sound intermittently for approximately 10 seconds, followed
by a different tone for approximately 20 more seconds.

15 seconds approximately 4500 miles (7200 km) after the
reminder light has been reset.

If you have a flat tire
●Stop the vehicle in a safe pl ace on a hard, flat surface.
● Set the parking brake.
● Shift the shift lever to P (automatic transmission) or R (manual
transmission).
● Stop the engine.
● Turn on the emergency flashers. ( →P. 292)
Your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. The flat tire can be
replaced with the spare tire.

Driving even a short dist ance with a flat tire can damage the tire and the
