■ When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods
● To prevent theft of the vehicle, do not leave the electronic key within 2 m
(6 ft.) of the vehicle.
● The smart entry & start system can be deactivated in advance. (P. 380)
■ To operate the system properly
Make sure to carry the electronic key when operating the system. Do not get
the electronic key too close to the vehicle when operating the system from the
outside of the vehicle.
Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the key
may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly. (The
alarm may go off accidentally, or the door lock prevention function may not
operate.)
■ If the smart entry & start system does not operate properly
● Locking and unlocking the doors: Use the mechanical key. (P. 356)
● Starting the engine: P. 357
■ Customization
Settings (e. g. smart entry & start system) can be changed.
(Customizable features: P. 380)
■ If the smart entry & start system has been deactivated in a customized
setting
● Locking and unlocking the doors:
Use the wireless remote control or mechanical key. ( P. 116, 356)

1723-5. Opening and closing the windows
YARIS_GRMN_OM_Europe_OM52J40E
■The power windows can be operated when
The engine switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■ Operating the power windows after turning the engine off
The power windows can be operated for approximately 45 seconds even
after the engine switch is turned to ACCESSORY mode or turned off. They
cannot, however, be operated once either side door is opened.
■ Jam protection function (driver’s window only)
If an object becomes caught between the window and the window frame, win-
dow travel is stopped and the window is opened slightly.
■ When the power window does not close normally (driver’s window only)
If the jam protection function is operating abnormally and a window cannot be
closed, perform the following operations using the power window switch on
the driver’s door.
● After stopping the vehicle, the window can be closed by holding the power
window switch in the one-touch closing position while the engine switch is
turned to the IGNITION ON mode.
● If the window still cannot be closed even by carrying out the operation as
explained above, initialize the function by performing the following proce-
dure.
Hold the power window switch in the one-touch closing position. Continue
holding the switch for a further 6 seconds after the window has closed.
Hold the power window switch in the one-touch opening position. Con-
tinue holding the switch for a further 2 seconds after the window has
opened completely.
Hold the power window switch in the one-touch closing position once
again. Continue holding the switch for a further 2 seconds after the win-
dow has closed.
If you release the switch while the window is moving, start again from the
beginning.
If the window continues to close but then re-open slightly even after perform-
ing the above procedure correctly, have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

■ When starting off on an uphill
The hill-start assist control will activate. ( P. 210)
■ Driving in the rain
● Drive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
● Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
● Refrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the rain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road sur-
face, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properly.
■ Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recom-
mended:
● For the first 300 km (200 miles):
Avoid sudden stops.
● For the first 1000 km (600 miles):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
■ High friction brake pads
The brake pads and discs are desi gned for use under high load conditions.
Therefore, brake noise may be generated depending on the vehicle speed,
braking force and vehicle environment (temperature, humidity, etc.).
■ Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. ( P. 378)

NOTICE
■When driving the vehicle
● Do not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time during
driving, as this may restrain the engine output.
● Do not shift gears unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed. After shifting,
do not release the clutch pedal abruptly. Doing so may damage the clutch,
transmission and gears.
● Observe the following to prevent the clutch from being damaged.
• Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving.
Doing so may cause clutch trouble.
• Do not use any gear other than the 1st gear when starting off and mov-
ing forward.
Doing so may damage the clutch.
• Do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle when stopping on an uphill
grade.
Doing so may damage the clutch.
● Do not shift the shift lever to R when the vehicle is still moving. Doing so
may damage the clutch, transmission and gears.

■ Operation of the engine switch
● If the switch is not pressed shortly and firmly, the engine switch mode may
not change or the engine may not start.
● If attempting to restart the engine immediately after turning the engine
switch off, the engine may not start in some cases. After turning the engine
switch off, please wait a few seconds before restarting the engine.
■ If the smart entry & start system has been deactivated in a customized
setting
P. 382
WARNING
■When starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not depress the
accelerator pedal while starting the engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
■ Caution while driving
If engine failure occurs while the vehicle is moving, do not lock or open the
doors until the vehicle reaches a safe and complete stop. Activation of the
steering lock in this circumstance may lead to an accident, resulting in
death or serious injury.
■ Stopping the engine in an emergency
If you want to stop the engine in an emergency while driving the vehicle,
press and hold the engine switch for more than 2 seconds, or press it briefly
3 times or more in succession. ( P. 317)
However, do not touch the engine switch while driving except in an emer-
gency. Turning the engine switch off while driving will not cause loss of
steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be
lost. This will make it more difficult to steer and brake, so you should pull
over and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
2104-5. Using the driving support systems
YARIS_GRMN_OM_Europe_OM52J40E
Driving assist systems
◆ABS (Anti-lock Brake System)
Helps to prevent wheel lock when the brakes are applied suddenly,
or if the brakes are applied while driving on a slippery road surface
◆Brake assist
Generates an increased level of braking force after the brake pedal
is depressed when the system detects a panic stop situation
◆VSC (Vehicle Stability Control)
Helps the driver to control skidding when swerving suddenly or
turning on slippery road surfaces
◆TRC (Traction Control)
Helps to maintain drive power and prevent the drive wheels from
spinning when starting the vehicle or accelerating on slippery roads
◆Hill-start assist control
Helps to reduce the backward movement of the vehicle when start-
ing on an uphill
◆EPS (Electric Power Steering)
Employs an electric motor to reduce the amount of effort needed to
turn the steering wheel
◆LSD (Limited Slip Differential)
Maintains driving power to a vehicle’s wheel when the other wheel
is spinning while turning on slippery surfaces.
To help enhance driving safety and performance, the following
systems operate automatically in response to various driving
situations. Be aware, however, that these systems are supple-
mentary and should not be relied upon too heavily when operat-
ing the vehicle.

onds while the vehicle is stopped.
The VSC off indicator light will come on and the “TRC off” will be shown on
the multi-information display.
Press again to turn the systems back on.
■ When the message is displayed on the multi-information display show-
ing that TRC has been disabled even if has not been pressed
TRC is temporary deactivated. If the information continues to show, contact
any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
■ Operating conditions of hill-start assist control
When the following four conditions are me t, the hill-start assist control will
operate:
● The shift lever is in a position other than R when starting off forward on an
upward incline, or the shift lever is in R when starting off backward on an
upward incline.
● The vehicle is stopped.
● The accelerator pedal is not depressed.
● The parking brake is not engaged.
■ Automatic system cancelation of hill-start assist control
The hill-start assist control will turn off in any of the following situations:
● The shift lever is shifted to R when starting off forward on an upward incline,
or the shift lever is shifted to other than R when starting off backward on an
upward incline.
● The accelerator pedal is depressed.
● Approximately 2 seconds elapse.
● 2 seconds at maximum elapsed after the brake pedal is released.
