WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause death or serious injury.
■Opening the moon roof
● Do not allow any passengers to put their hands or heads outside the vehi-
cle while it is moving.
● Do not sit on top of the moon roof.
■ Closing the moon roof
● The driver is responsible for moon roof opening and closing operations.
In order to prevent accidental operation, especially by a child, do not let a
child operate the moon roof. It is possible for children and other passen-
gers to have body parts caught in the moon roof.
● Check to make sure that all passengers do not have any part of their body
in a position where it could be caught when the moon roof is being oper-
ated.
● Do not allow children to operate the moon roof.
Closing the moon roof on someone can cause death or serious injury. The
driver is responsible for instructing children not to operate the moon roof.
● When exiting the vehicle, turn the “POWER” switch off, carry the key and
exit the vehicle along with the child. There may be accidental operation,
due to mischief, etc., that may possibly lead to an accident.
■ Jam protection function
● Never use any part of your body to intentionally activate the jam protection
function.
● The jam protection function may not work if something gets caught just
before the moon roof fully closes.

With the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever to D.

Release the parking brake. ( →P. 203)
Gradually release the brake pedal and gently depress the accelera-
tor pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
With the shift lever in D, depress the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
If the vehicle is to be stopped for an extended period of time, shift the shift
lever to P. (→P. 198)
With the shift lever in D, depress the brake pedal.
Set the parking brake ( →P. 203), and shift the shift lever to P
( → P. 198).
Vehicles without a smart key system: Turn the engine switch to the
“LOCK” position to stop the hybrid system.
Vehicles with a smart key system: Press the “POWER” switch to
stop the hybrid system.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your person.
If parking on a hill, block the wheels as needed.

Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is in P.
Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the
“START” position to start the
hybrid system.
If the “READY” indicator turns on,
the hybrid system will operate nor-
mally.
Continue depressing the brake
pedal until the “READY” indicator
is illuminated.
Check that the “READY” indicator is illuminated.
If the “READY” indicator changes from a flashing light to a solid light and a
beep sound, the hybrid system is starting normally.
The vehicle will not move when the “READY” indicator is off.
The vehicle can move when the “READY” indicator is on even if the engine
is stopped. (The engine starts or stops automatically in accordance with
the state of the vehicle.)

The immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( →P. 84)

In the event that the “READY” indicator does not come on even after perform-
ing the proper procedures for starting the vehicle, contact your Toyota dealer
immediately.
■ If the hybrid system is malfunctioning

■ Key reminder function
A buzzer sounds if the driver’s door is opened while the engine switch is in
the “LOCK” or “ACC” position to remind you to remove the key. When starting the hybrid system, the
engine switch may seem stuck in the
“LOCK” position. To free it, turn the key
while turning the steering wheel slightly
left and right.
WARNING
■When starting the hybrid system
Always start the hybrid system while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not
depress the accelerator pedal while starting the hybrid system under any
circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
■ Caution when driving
Do not turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position while driving. If, in an
emergency, you must turn the hybrid system off while the vehicle is moving,
turn the engine switch only to the “ACC” position to stop the hybrid system.
An accident may result if the hybrid system is stopped while driving.

If the shift lever is not set in P, the hybrid system may not be started.

Press the “POWER” switch

When operating the “POWER”
switch, one short, firm press is
enough.

tronic key on your person starts the hybrid system or changes
“POWER” switch modes.

If the hybrid system is stopped with the shift lever in a position other
than P, the “POWER” switch will not be turned off but instead be
turned to ACCESSORY mode. Perform the following procedure to
turn the switch off:
Check that the parking brake is set.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Check that is displayed on t he multi-information display and
then press the “POWER” switch once.
Check that on the multi-information display is off.
■ Auto power off function
When the shift lever is in P, if the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY or ON mode
with the hybrid system not operating for more than 20 minutes (ACCESSORY
mode) or one hour (ON mode), the “POWER” switch will automatically turn
off. However, this function cannot entirely prevent 12-volt battery discharge.
Do not leave the vehicle with the “POWER” switch in ACCESSORY or ON
mode for long periods of time when the hybrid system is not operating.
