During the first 1,600 km (1,000 miles), follow these
recommendations to obtain maximum engine per-
formance and ensure the future reliability and
economy of your new vehicle. Failure to follow these
recommendations may result in shortened engine
life and reduced engine performance.
• Do not drive at
aconstant speed, either fast or
slow, for long periods of time.
• Do not run the engine over 4,000 rpm.
• Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear.
• Do not start quickly.
• Do not brake hard as much as possible.
• Do not tow
atrailer for at least the first 800 km
(500 miles). WARNING
The driving characteristics of your vehicle will
change remarkably by any additional load and its
distribution, as well as by adding optional equip-
ment (trailer coupling, roof rail, etc.). Your driv-
ing style and speed must be adjusted according
to the circumstances. Especially when carrying
heavy loads, your speed must be reduced ad-
equately.
• Make sure the area around the vehicle is clear.
• Check fluid levels such as engine oil, coolant,
brake (and clutch) fluid, window washer fluid as
frequently as possible, at least whenever you
refuel.
• Visually inspect tyres for their appearance and
condition. Measure and check the tyre pressure
for proper inflation.
• Check that all windows and lights are clean.
• Adjust the seat and head restraint positions.
• Adjust the inside and outside rearview mirror po-
sitions.
• Fasten your seat belt and ask all passengers to
do the same.
• Check that all doors are closed.
• Check the operation of the warning lights when
the ignition switch is placed in the “ON” position. •
Maintenance items in the “8. Maintenance and
do-it-yourself” section should be checked peri-
odically.

Some day-to-day and regular maintenance is essen-
tial to maintain your vehicle’s good mechanical con-
dition, as well as its emission and engine perfor-
mance.
It is the owner’s responsibility to make sure that the
specified maintenance, as well as general mainte-
nance, is performed.
As the vehicle owner, you are the only one who can
ensure that your vehicle receives the proper mainte-
nance care.
SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
For your convenience, the required scheduled main-
tenance items are described and listed in aseparate
Warranty Information and Maintenance booklet. You
must refer to that booklet to ensure that necessary
maintenance is performed on your vehicle at regular
intervals.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
General maintenance includes those items which should be checked during normal day-to-day opera-
tion of the vehicle. They are essential if your vehicle
is to continue to operate properly. It is your respon-
sibility to perform these procedures regularly as pre- scribed.
Performing general maintenance checks requires
minimal mechanical skill and only afew general au-
tomotive tools.
These checks or inspections can be done by your-
self, aqualified technician, or if you prefer, your
approved dealer or qualified workshop. WHERE TO GO FOR SERVICE
If maintenance service is required or your vehicle
appears to malfunction, have the systems checked
and tuned by an authorised approved dealer or
qualified workshop.
During normal day-to-day operation of the vehicle,
general maintenance should be performed regularly
as prescribed in this section. If you detect any un-
usual sounds, vibrations or smells, be sure to check
for the cause or have an approved dealer or quali-
fied workshop do it promptly. In addition, you should
notify an approved dealer or qualified workshop if
you think that repairs are required.
When performing any checks or maintenance work,
closely observe “Maintenance precautions” later in
this section.
EXPLANATION OF GENERAL
MAINTENANCE ITEMS
Additional information on the following items with
“*” is found later in this section.
Outside vehicle
The maintenance items listed here should be per-
formed from time to time, unless otherwise speci-
fied.
Doors and bonnet:
Check that all doors and the bonnet operate
smoothly as well as the tailgate. Also make sure that
all latches lock securely. Lubricate if necessary.
Make sure that the secondary latch keeps the bon-
net from opening when the primary latch is released.
When driving in areas using road salt or other cor-
rosive materials, check lubrication frequently.
MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
8-2 Maintenance and do-it-yourself

•
Recommended battery: CR2025 or equiva-
lent
• Do not touch the internal circuit and electric
terminals as doing so could cause
amalfunc-
tion.
• Make sure that the
%side faces the bottom
of the case.
4. Align the tips of the upper and lower parts ➀,
and then push them together until it is securely
closed ➁.
5. Operate the buttons to check its operation.
See an approved dealer or qualified workshop if you
need assistance for replacement. WARNING
• Operating the engine with the air cleaner filter
off can cause you or others to be burned. The
air cleaner filter not only cleans the intake air,
it also stops flame if the engine backfires. If
the air cleaner filter is not installed and the engine backfires, you could be burned. Never
drive with the air cleaner filter off. Be cautious
working on the engine when the air cleaner
filter is off.
• Never pour fuel into the throttle body or at-
tempt to start the engine with the air cleaner
removed. Doing so could result in serious in-
jury.
To remove the filter, release the lock pins ➀and
pull the unit upward ➁. The dry paper type filter element may be cleaned
and reused. Replace the air filter according to the
maintenance schedule shown in
aseparate mainte-
nance booklet.
When replacing the filter, wipe the inside of the air
cleaner housing and the cover with adamp cloth. SDI2452Z JVM0451XZ
