Daimler's declared policy is one of compre-
hensive environmental protection.
The objectives are for the natural resources
that form the basis of our existence on this
planet to be used sparingly and in am anner
that takes the requirements of both nature
and humanity into account.
You too can help to protect the environment
by operating your vehicle in an environmen-
tally responsible manner.
Fuel consumption and the rate of engine,
transmission, brake and tire wear are affected
by these factors: R

You can influence both factors. You should
bear the following in mind:
Operating conditions: R
avoid short trips as these increase fuel con-
sumption. R
always make sure that the tire pressures
are correct. R
do not carry any unnecessary weight. R
remove roof racks once you no longer need

ar egularly serviced vehicle will contribute
to environmental protection. You should
therefore adhere to the service intervals. R
always have service work carried out at a
qualified specialist workshop.
Personal driving style: R
do not depress the accelerator pedal when

do not warm up the engine when the vehicle
is stationary. R
drive carefully and maintain as afe distance
from the vehicle in front. R
avoid frequent, sudden acceleration and
braking. R
change gear in good time and use each gear
only up to

Vehicle operation outside the USA
and Canada If you plan to operate your vehicle in foreign
countries, please be aware that: R
service facilities or replacement parts may
not be readily available. R
unleaded fuel for vehicles with ac atalytic
converter may not be available. Leaded fuel
may cause damage to the catalytic converter. R
the fuel may have ac onsiderably lower octane
rating. Unsuitable fuel can cause engine dam-
age.

Introduction

Problems with the side windows
G WARNING
If you close as ide window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side window
closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of the
body could be trapped in the closing area in the process. This poses an increased risk of injury or
even fatal injury.
Make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. To stop the closing process, release
the switch or push the switch again to reopen the side window.

Roof
Important safety notes
G WARNING
If you do not fully open/close the soft top, the
soft-top hydraulics depressurize after as hort
time. This causes the soft top to lower unex-
pectedly and may cause you or others to be
trapped. There is ar isk of injury.
Always open or close the soft top completely.
G WARNING
Closing the roof manually is ac omplicated
and technically demanding procedure, which
requires al ot of strength. You or others can
become trapped. There is ar isk of injury.
Only have the soft top closed manually at a
qualified specialist workshop. ! Never sit on the rear shelf or store heavy
object st here. You will otherwise damage the
roof and the rear shelf of your vehicle.
! Do not forget that the weather can change
abruptly. Make certain that the roof is closed
when you leave the vehicle. The vehicle elec-
tronics can be damaged if water enters the
vehicle interior.
! When opening and closing the roof, make
sure that: R
there is sufficient clearance, as the roof
swings upwards. R
there is sufficient clearance behind the
vehicle, as the trunk lid swings backwards
beyond the bumper. R
the trunk is only loaded to below the trunk
partition. R
the trunk partition is not pushed up by the
load. R

Operating AIRGUIDE X
To fold out AIRGUIDE: turn disc C in the
direction of the arrow towards the middle of
the vehicle to the stop. X
Repeat with disc D .X
To fold in AIRGUIDE: turn discs C and D
back behind the roll bar to the stop.
Discs C and D can also be used independently
of each other ,e .g. when you are driving without
ap assenger.
MAGIC SKY CONTROL
General notes MAGIC SKY CONTROL is ap anorama roof, the
transparenc yofw hich can be changed by apply-
ing electrical voltage.
MAGIC SKY CONTROL can be switched between
darkened and transparent states.
MAGIC SKY CONTROL darken sa utomatically
after as hort period when you turn the SmartKey
to position 0 or remove the SmartKey.
Risk of electric shock
G DANGER
MAGIC SKY CONTROL operates using high
voltage. If the trim behind the overhead con-
trol panel is damaged or removed, electrical
component sw ill be exposed. If you touch
these components, you could get an electric
shock .T here is ar isk of fatal injury. R
Never remove the trim behind the overhead
control panel. R
If the trim is damaged, never touch the
electrical component sb ehind it.R
Always have work on the MAGIC SKY CON-
TROL carried out at aq ualified specialist
workshop.
The electrical component sofM AGIC SKY CON-
TROL are protected by ap aneling behind the
overhead control panel.
The MAGIC SKY CONTROL control unit is
marked with ay ellow warning sticker that warns
you of high voltage. The electric cables of the
high-voltage section are color orange.
Operating MAGIC SKY CONTROL
X
Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the
ignition lock.
MAGIC SKY CONTROL switches to the status
it was set to before the engin ew as switched
off. X
To change the degree of transparency:
press button C .
At temperatures below freezing, the change is
slower and uneven .T he entire process may take
some time.80
Roof
Opening and closing

To switc hont he high-beam headlamps:
turn the light switch to X or X .X
Press the combinatio ns wi tch beyond the
pressure point in the direction of arrow C .
In the X position, the high-bea mh ead-
lamps are onl ys wi tched on when it is dark and
the engine is running.
The blue W indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster lights up when the high-beam
headlamps are switched on. X
To switc ho ff the high-beam headlamps:
move the combinatio ns wi tch back to its nor-
ma lp osition.

the headlamps according to the steering move-

allows yo utoi de ntify pedestrians ,c yclists and
animals.
Active: when the lights are switched on.
Vehicles with Lane Keeping Assist: the active
light functio ne valuate st he course of the lane in
which yo ua re driving and pre-emptively con-
trol st he active light function.
Adaptiv eH ighbeam Assist
General notes
Yo uc an us et hi sf unctio ntos et the headlamps
to change between lo wb ea ma nd high beam
automatically. The system recognizes vehicles
with thei rl ig hts on, either approaching from the
opposite direction or traveling in front of yourExterior lighting 95

reach its operating temperature. The sound of
the engine may change during this time.
Automatic transmission X
Depress the brake peda la nd keep it
depressed. X
Shift the transmission to position P .
Transmission position display P is shown in
the multifunction display.
i You can start the engine in transmission

Starting procedure with the SmartKey To start the engine using the SmartKey instead
of KEYLESS-GO, pul lt he Start/Stop button out

Turn the SmartKey to position 3 in the ignition
lock ( Y
pag e1 15) and release it as soon as the
engine is running.
Usin gK EYLE SS-GO to start the engineThe Start/Stop button can be used to start the
vehicl em anually withou ti nserting the SmartKey
into the ignitio nl ock. The Start/Stop button
must be inserted in the ignitio nl ock and the
SmartKey must be in the vehicle. This mode for
starting the engine operates independently of
the ECO start/stop automatic engine start func-
tion. X
Depress the brake peda la nd keep it

Pulling away
General notes
G WARNING
If the engine spee disa bove the idling speed
and you engage transmission position D or R ,
the vehicl ec ould pul la wa ys uddenly .T here is
ar isk of an accident.
When engaging transmission position D or R ,
alway sf irmly depress the brake peda la nd do
not simultaneously accelerate. ! Change gea ring ood time and avoi ds pin-
ning the wheels. You could otherwise damage
the vehicle.
Depress the accelerator carefully when pulling
away.
The vehicl el ocks centrally once you have pulled
away. The locking knobs in the doors drop down.
You can open the doors from the insid eata ny
time.
You can als od eactivate the automatic locking
feature ( Y
pag e1 73).
It is only possible to shift the transmission from
position P to the desired position if you depress
the brake pedal. Only then is the shift lock
released.
i Upshifts take place at highe re ngine speeds
after ac old start. This help st he catalytic con-
verter to reach its operating temperature
more quickly.

Hill start assist Hill start assist help sy ou when pulling awa yf or-
ward sorinr everse on an uphill gradient. It holds
the vehicl ef or as hort time after you have
removed you rf oot from the brake pedal. This
gives you enoug ht ime to move you rf oot from
the brake peda ltot he accelerator peda la nd to
depress it before the vehicl eb egins to roll.
G WARNING
After as hort time, hill start assist wil lnol on-
ger brake you rv ehicl ea nd it could roll away.
There is ar isk of an accident and injury.
Therefore, quickly move you rf oot from the
brake peda ltot he accelerator pedal. Never
leave the vehicl ew hen it is held by hill start
assist.
Hill start assist is not active if: R
you are pulling awa yonal evel road or on a
downhill gradient. R
the transmission is in position N .R
the electric parking brake is applied. R
