General notes In order to prevent the veh icle 's battery fr om
disc harg ing , the int erior lighting funct ion s are
automatical ly deactivated after some time
except when the Sm artKey is in posi tion 2 in the
igniti on loc k.
The co lor and brightne ss for the ambient lighting
may be set via the multimedia system (see the
separate oper ati ng ins truct ion s).
Automatic interior lighting control X
To switch on: set the swit ch to center posi -
tion

bulbs of the same type and the specified volt-
age.
Marks on the glass tube reduce the service life
of the bulbs. Do not touch the glass tube with
your bare hands. If necessary, clean the glass
tube when cold with alcohol or spirit and rub it
off with a lint-free cloth.
Protect bulbs from moisture during operation.
Do not allow bulbs to come into contact with
liquids.
Replace only the bulbs listed ( Y
page 118).
Have the bulbs that you cannot replace yourself
replaced at a qualified specialist workshop.
If you require assistance replacing bulbs, con-
sult a qualified specialist workshop.
If the new bulb still does not light up, consult a
qualified specialist workshop.
Headlamps and lights are an important aspect of
vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure
that these function correctly at all times. Have
the headlamp setting checked regularly.
Overview of bulb replacement - bulb
types You can replace the following bulbs. The bulb
type can be found in the legend.
Halogen headlamps
C
Low-beam headlamp: H7 55 W

High-beam headlamp: H7 55 W

Press on housing cover C and turn it to the
right. X
Replace the cover in the front wheel housing
( Y

Switch off the lights. X
Open the hood. X
Turn housing cover C counter-clockwise and
remove it. X
Pull lever

Hold the windshield wiper arm firmly when
you change the wiper blade. If you release the
wiper arm without a wiper blade and it falls
onto the windshield/rear window, the wind-
shield/rear window may be damaged by the
force of the impact.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have
the wiper blades changed at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop.

Remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. X
Fold the wiper arm away from the windshield.

Firmly press release knob C and pull wiper
blade D upwards from the wiper arm in the
direction of the arrow.
Installing the wiper blades X
Position new wiper blade C in the retainer on
the wiper arm and slide it into place in the
direction of the arrow.
The wiper blade audibly engages. X
Make sure that the wiper blade is seated cor-
rectly. X
Fold the wiper arm back onto the windshield.

Remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. X
Fold wiper arm C away from the rear window
until it engages. X
Position wiper blade D at a right angle to
wiper arm C . X
Hold wiper arm C and press wiper blade D
in the direction of the arrow until it releases. X
Remove wiper blade D .
Installing a wiper blade X
Place new wiper blade D onto wiper arm C .X
Hold wiper arm C and press wiper blade D
in the opposite direction to the arrow until it
engages. X
Make sure that wiper blade D is seated cor-
rectly. X
Position wiper blade D parallel to wiper
arm C . X

are jammed. Leaves or snow, for example, may be obstructing the windshield wiper
movement. The wiper motor has been deactivated. X
For safety reasons, you should remove the SmartKey from the igni-
tion lock.

Switch off the engine using the Start/Stop button and open the
driver's door. X
Remove the cause of the obstruction. X
Switch the windshield wipers back on.

Setting climate cont rol to automatic
Gene ra l notesIn automatic mode, th e set temperature is main -

system automatically regulates th e temperature
of th e dispensed air, th e airflow and th e air dis-
tribution .
The "Cooling wit h air dehumidification " function
is activated automatically in automatic mode.
In th e rear compartment, you can also switch
climat e control for th e rear seat s to automatic
mod e usin g th e X button.

Rear window defroster
General notes The rear window defroster has a high current
draw. You should therefore switch it off as soon
as the rear window is clear. Otherwise, the rear
window defroster switches off automatically
after several minutes. If the battery voltage is too low, the rear window
defroster may switch off.

The rear window

not be activated. The battery has not been sufficiently charged. X
Switch off any consumers that are not required, e.g. reading lamps,
interior lighting or the seat heating.
When the battery is sufficiently charged, the rear window defroster
can be activated again.
Switching air-recirculation mode
on/off
General notes You can deactivate the flow of fresh air if
unpleasant odors are entering the vehicle from
outside. The air already inside the vehicle will
then be recirculated.
If you switch on air-recirculation mode, the win-
dows can fog up more quickly, in particular at
low temperatures. Only use air-recirculation
mode briefly to prevent the windows from fog-
ging up.
