Switches and Controls

Fog Lights *
The fog lights can be used when the
ignition is switched ON.
Use this switch to turn on the fog lights.
The fog lights will improve visibility at
night and during foggy conditions.
The fog lights turn on when the fog light
switch is turned to the

off when the switch is turned to the

position.
The fog lights turn on when the headlights
are turned on. They will not turn on if the
headlight switch is in the
position or

Turn and Lane-Change
Signals
The ignition must be switched ON to use
the turn and lane-change signals.
Turn Signals
Move the signal lever down (for a left
turn) or up (for a right turn) to the stop
position. The signal will self-cancel after
the turn is completed.

If the indicator light continues to À ash
after a turn, manually return the lever to its
original position.

y Switching the auto-wiper lever from the

to the position while driving
activates the windshield wipers once,
after which they operate according to
the rainfall amount.
 


y The auto-wiper control may not operate
when the rain sensor temperature is
about -10 °C (14 °F) or lower, or about
85 °C (185 °F) or higher.
 


y If the windshield is coated with water
repellent, the rain sensor may not be
able to sense the amount of rainfall
correctly and the auto-wiper control
may not operate properly.
 


y If dirt or foreign matter (such as ice or
matter containing salt water) adheres
to the windshield above the rain sensor,
or if the windshield is iced, it could
cause the wipers to move automatically.
However, if the wipers cannot remove
this ice, dirt or foreign matter, the auto-
wiper control will stop operation. In
this case, set the wiper lever to the low
speed position or high speed position
for manual operation, or remove the ice,
dirt or foreign matter by hand to restore
the auto-wiper operation.
 


y If the auto-wiper lever is left in the
position, the wipers could operate
automatically from the effect of strong
light sources, electromagnetic waves, or
infrared light because the rain sensor
uses an optical sensor. It is
recommended that the auto-wiper lever
be switched to the
position other
than when driving the vehicle under
rainy conditions.
 


y If the headlight switch and the
windshield wiper switch are in
,
and the wipers are operated at low or
high speed by the auto wiper control for
several seconds, bad weather conditions
are determined and the headlights may
be turned on.
 


y The auto-wiper control functions can
be turned off. Refer to Personalization
Features on page 9-10 .

Windshield Washer
Pull the lever toward you and hold it to
spray washer À uid.


Washer OFF

N O T E
If the windshield washer is turned on when
the windshield wipers are not operating,
the windshield wipers operate a few times.

If the washer does not work, inspect the
À uid level (page 6-32 ). If the À uid level
is normal, consult an Authorized Mazda
Dealer.

Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) *
The adaptive front lighting system (AFS) automatically adjusts the headlight beams to the
left or right in conjunction with the operation of the steering wheel after the headlights have
been turned on and the vehicle speed is about 2 km/h (2 mph) or higher.
A system malfunction or operation conditions are indicated by a warning.
Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-24 .
N O T E
The Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) function can be switched to operable/inoperable
using the personalization function.
Refer to Personalization Features on page 9-10 .

High Beam Control System (HBC) *
The High Beam Control System (HBC) determines the conditions in front of the vehicle
using the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) while driving in darkness to automatically switch
the headlights between high and low beams.
Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-24 .
While driving the vehicle at a speed of about 30 km/h (19 mph), the headlights are switched
to high beams when there are no vehicles ahead or approaching in the opposite direction.
The system switches the headlights to low beams when one of the following occurs:
 


y The system detects a vehicle or the headlights/lights of a vehicle approaching in the
opposite direction.
 


y The vehicle is driven on roads lined with streetlamps or on roads in well-lit cities and
towns.
 


y The vehicle is driven at less than about 20 km/h (12 mph).

Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) The recognition distance of the
Forward Sensing Camera (FSC)
varies according to the
surrounding conditions.

The warning light À ashes when the system has a malfunction.
Refer to Warning Lights on page 4-25 .
CAUTION
 


¾ Do not adjust the vehicle height, modify the headlight units, or remove the camera,
otherwise the system will not operate normally.
 


¾ Do not rely excessively on the High Beam Control System (HBC) and drive the vehicle while
paying suffi cient attention to safety. Switch the headlights between the high beams and
low beams manually if necessary.

The timing in which the system switches the headlights changes under the following
conditions. If the system does not switch the headlights appropriately, manually switch
between high and low beams according to the visibility as well as road and traf¿ c
conditions.
 


y When there are sources of light in the area such as street lamps, illuminated signboards,
and traf¿ c signals.




y When there are reÀ ective objects in the surrounding area such as reÀ ective plates and
signs.
 


y When visibility is reduced under rain, snow and foggy conditions.



y When driving on roads with sharp turn or hilly terrain.



y When the headlights/rear lamps of vehicles in front of you or in the opposite lane are dim
or not illuminated.
 


y When there is suf¿ cient darkness such as at dawn or dusk.



y When the luggage compartment is loaded with heavy objects or the rear passenger seats
are occupied.
 


y When visibility is reduced due to a vehicle in front of you spraying water from its tires
onto your windshield.

To Operate the System
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
operates to switch the headlights
automatically between high and low
beams after the ignition is switched ON
and the headlight switch is in the AUTO
and high beam position.
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
determines that it is dark based on the
brightness of the surrounding area. At the
same time, the High Beam Control System
(HBC) indicator light (green) in the
instrument cluster illuminates.



N O T E
 


y When the vehicle speed is 30 km/h
(19 mph) or higher, the headlights
automatically switch to high beams
when there are no vehicles ahead or
approaching in the opposite direction.
  When the vehicle speed is less than

y If your vehicle deviates from its traf¿ c lane, the LDWS operates (warning sound and
indicator light). Steer the vehicle adequately to drive the vehicle to the center of the lane.
 


y When the turn signal lever is operated for a lane change, the LDWS warning is
automatically canceled. The LDWS warning becomes operable when the turn signal lever
is returned and the system detects the white or yellow lines.
 


y If the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal is operated abruptly and the
vehicle moves close to a white or yellow line, the system determines that the driver is
making a lane change and the LDWS warning is automatically canceled.
 


y The LDWS may not operate during the period immediately after the vehicle has deviated
from its lane and the LDWS has operated, or the vehicle deviates from its lane repeatedly
within a short period of time.
 


y The LDWS does not operate if it does not detect the white or yellow lines of the traf¿ c
lane.
 


y Under the following conditions, the LDWS may not be able to detect white or yellow lines
correctly and the LDWS may not operate correctly.
 


y If an object placed on the dashboard is reÀ ected in the windshield and picked up by the
camera.
 


y Heavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat and the
vehicle is inclined.
 


y The tire pressures are not adjusted to the speci¿ ed pressure.



y When the vehicle is driven on the entry and exit to or from the rest area or tollgate of a
highway.
 


y The white or yellow lines are less visible because of dirt or paint À aking.



y The vehicle ahead is running near a white or yellow line and the line is less visible.



y A white or yellow line is less visible because of bad weather (rain, fog, or snow).



y The vehicle is driven on a temporary lane or section with a closed lane due to
construction.
 


y A misleading line is picked up on the road such as a temporary line for construction,
or because of shade, lingering snow, or grooves ¿ lled with water.




y The surrounding brightness suddenly changes such as when entering or exiting a
tunnel.
 


y The illumination of the headlights is weakened because of dirt or the optical axis is
deviated.
 


y The windshield is dirty or foggy.



y Back-light is reÀ ecting from the road surface.



y The road surface is wet and shiny after rain, or there are puddles on the road.



y The shade of a guardrail parallel to a white or yellow line is on the road.
y The width of a lane is excessively narrow or wide.



y The road is excessively uneven.



y The vehicle is shaken after hitting a road bump.



y There are two or more adjacent white or yellow lines.



y There are various road markings or lane markings of various shapes near an
intersection.

y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cannot detect target objects
correctly, and each system may be unable to operate normally.
 


y The height of the vehicle ahead is low.



y You drive your vehicle at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.



y Headlights are not turned on during the night or when going through a tunnel. 



y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) may not be able to detect
target objects correctly.
 


y When driving next to walls with no patterning (including fences and longitudinally
striped walls).
 


y The taillights of the vehicle ahead are turned off.



y A vehicle is outside the illumination range of the headlights.



y The vehicle is making a sharp turn, or ascending or descending a steep slope.



y Entering or exiting a tunnel.



y Heavy luggage is loaded causing the vehicle to tilt.



y Strong light is shone at the front of the vehicle (back light or high-beam light from on-
coming vehicles).
 


y There are many light emitters on the vehicle ahead.



y When the vehicle ahead is not equipped with taillights or the taillights are turned off at
nighttime.
 


y The vehicle ahead has a special shape. For example, a vehicle towing a trailer house
or a boat, or a vehicle carrier carrying a vehicle with its front pointed rearward.
