Driving on grades
Reduce speed and shift to a lower gear
before you start down a long or steep
downgrade. If you don’t shift down, you
might have to use your brakes so much
that they would get hot and no longer
operate efficiently.
On a long uphill grade, shift down and
reduce your speed to around 70 km/h (45mph) to reduce the possibility of engine
and transaxle overheating.
If your trailer weighs more than the max-
imum trailer weight without trailer brakes
and you have an automatic transaxle,
you should drive in D (Drive) when tow-
ing a trailer.
Operating your vehicle in D (Drive) when
towing a trailer will minimize heat build up
and extend the life of your transaxle.CAUTION
When towing a trailer on steep
grades (in excess of 6%) pay close
attention to the engine coolanttemperature gauge to ensure theengine does not overheat.
If the coolant temperature redwarning light illuminates or the coolant temperature gaugemoves towards “130”, pull overand stop as soon as it is safe to
do so, and allow the engine to idleuntil it cools down. You may pro- ceed once the engine has cooledsufficiently.
You must decide driving speed depending on trailer weight anduphill grade to reduce the possi-bility of engine and transaxle overheating.

(Continued) For vehicles equipped with a dual clutch transmission when towinga trailer on steep grades, theclutch in the transmission could
overheat.
When the clutch is overheated,the safe protection modeengages. If the safe protection
mode engages, the gear positionindicator on the cluster blinkswith a chime sound.
At this time, a warning messagewill appear on the LCD display
and driving may not be smooth.
If you ignore this warning, the driv-ing condition may become worse.
To return to normal driving condi-tion, stop the vehicle on a flat
road and apply the foot brake fora few minutes before driving off.

When you are ready to leave after park-
ing on a hill
1. With the manual transaxle in Neutral
or automatic transaxle in P (Park),
apply your brakes and hold the brake
pedal down while you:
and
2. Slowly remove your foot from the brake pedal.
3. Drive slowly until the trailer is clear of the chocks.
4. Stop and have someone pick up and store the chocks. Maintenance when trailer towing
Your vehicle will need service more often
when you regularly pull a trailer.
Important items to pay particular atten-tion to include engine oil, automatic
transaxle fluid, axle lubricant and cooling
system fluid. Brake condition is another
important item to frequently check. Each
item is covered in this manual, and the
Index will help you find them quickly. If
you’re trailering, it is a good idea to
review these chapters before you start
your trip.
Do not forget to also maintain your trailer
and hitch. Follow the maintenance
schedule that accompanied your trailer
and check it periodically. Preferably, con-
duct the check at the start of each day’s
driving. Most importantly, all hitch nutsand bolts should be tight.CAUTION
Due to higher load during trailer
usage, overheating might occur
in hot days or during uphill driv- ing. If the coolant gauge indicatesover-heating, switch off the airconditioner and stop the vehicle
in a safe area to cool down theengine.
When towing check transaxle fluid more frequently.
If your vehicle is not equipped with an air conditioner, youshould install a condenser fan to improve engine performance when towing a trailer.

If you do decide to pull a trailer
Here are some important points if you decide to pull a trailer:
Consider using a sway control. You can ask a hitch dealer about sway control.
Do not do any towing with your car during its first 2,000 km (1,200 miles) in order to allow the engine to properly break in. Failure
to heed this caution may result in serious engine or transaxle damage.
When towing a trailer, we recommend that you consult an authorized Kia dealer on additional requirements such as a towing kit, etc.
Always drive your vehicle at a moderate speed (less than 100 km/h (60 mph)).
On a long uphill grade, do not exceed 70 km/h (45 mph) or the posted towing speed limit, whichever is lower.

formance decreases. From 1.000 m
above sea level and for every 1.000 m
thereafter 10% of vehicle/trailer weight
(trailer weighter + gross vehicle weight)

Never load a trailer with more weight in the rear than in the
front. The front should be loaded
with approximately 60% of the
total trailer load; the rear should
be loaded with approximately40% of the total trailer load.
Never exceed the maximum weight limits of the trailer or trail-

What to do in an emergency
EMERGENCY STARTING
Connect cables in numerical order and
disconnect in reverse order. Jump starting
Jump starting can be dangerous if done
incorrectly. Therefore, to avoid harm to
yourself or damage to your vehicle or
battery, follow the jump starting proce-
dures. If in doubt, we strongly recom-
mend that you have a competent techni-
cian or towing service jump start your
vehicle.
CAUTION
Use only a 12-volt jumper system.
You can damage a 12-volt starting motor, ignition system, and otherelectrical parts beyond repair byuse of a 24-volt power supply (either
two 12-volt batteries in series or a24-volt motor generator set).
WARNING - Battery
• Keep all flames or sparks away from the battery. The battery pro-
duces hydrogen gas which may
explode if exposed to flame orsparks.
If these instructions are not fol-
lowed exactly, serious personal
injury and damage to the vehicle
may occur! If you are not sure how
to follow this procedure, seek
qualified assistance. Automobilebatteries contain sulfuric acid.
This is poisonous and highly cor-
rosive. When jump starting, wear
protective glasses and be careful
not to get acid on yourself, your
clothing or on the vehicle.
Do not attempt to jump start the vehicle if the discharged battery
is frozen or if the electrolyte level
is low; the battery may rupture or
explode.
Do not allow the (+) and (-) jumper cables to touch. It maycause sparks.
The battery may rupture or explode when you jump start with
a low or frozen battery.

Distributing the sealant
11. Immediately drive approximately7~10 km (4~6 miles or, about
10min) to evenly distribute the
sealant in the tire. Do not exceed a speed of 80 km/h
(50 mph). If possible, do not fall
below a speed of 20 km/h (12 mph).
While driving, if you experience any
unusual vibration, ride disturbance or
noise, reduce your speed and drive
with caution until you can safely pulloff of the side of the road.
Call for road side service or towing.
When you use the Tire Mobility Kit,the tire pressure sensors and wheel
may be damaged by sealant, removethe sealant stained with tire pressuresensors and wheel and inspect in
authorized dealer.Checking the tire inflation pressure
1. After driving approximately 7~10
km (4~6 miles or about 10 min),
stop at a safety location.
2. Connect the filling hose (2) of the compressor directly to the tire
valve.
3. Plug the compressor power cord into the vehicle power outlet.
4. Adjust the tire inflation pressure to the recomended tire inflation.

- To increase the inflation pres- sure : Switch on the compressor,
position I. To check the current
inflation pressure setting, briefly
switch off the compressor.
- To reduce the inflation pres-sure : Press the button (8) on the
compressor.
✽✽ NOTICE
Do not let the compressor run for
more than 10 minutes, otherwise the
device will overheat and may be
damaged.

✽ NOTICE
The pressure gauge may show high-
er than actual reading when the
compressor is running. To get an
accurate tire reading, the compres-
sor needs to be turned off.
CAUTION
If the inflation pressure is not maintained, drive the vehicle asecond time, refer to Distributing the sealant. Then repeat steps 1to 4.
Use of the TMK may be ineffectu-al for tire damage larger thanapproximately 4 mm (0.16 in).
We recommend that you contactan authorized Kia dealer if the tire cannot be made roadworthywith the Tire Mobility Kit.
CAUTION - Tire pressure
sensor
The sealant on the tire pressure
sensor and wheel should beremoved when you replace thetire with a new one and inspect the tire pressure sensors at anauthorized dealer.
WARNING
The tire inflation pressure must
be at least 220 kPa (32 psi). If it
is not, do not continue driving.
