In order to help provide protectionin a severe collision, the air bags
must inflate rapidly. The speed ofthe air bag inflation is a conse-
quence of extremely short time inwhich a collision occurs and the
need to inflate the air bag between
the occupant and the vehicle struc-
tures before the occupant impacts
those structures. This speed of inflation reduces the
risk of serious or life-threatening
injuries in a severe collision and is
thus a necessary part of the airbag design.
However, air bag inflation can also
cause injuries which can include
facial abrasions, bruises and bro-
ken bones because the inflationspeed also causes the air bags to
expand with a great deal of force.
There are even circumstances under which contact with the
steering wheel air bag can cause
fatal injuries, especially if the
occupant is positioned exces-
sively close to the steeringwheel.Noise and smoke
When the air bags inflate, they make
a loud noise and they leave smoke
and powder in the air inside of the
vehicle. This is normal and is a result
of the ignition of the air bag inflator.
After the air bag inflates, you may
feel substantial discomfort in breath-
ing due to the contact of your chestwith both the seat belt and the air
bag, as well as from breathing the
smoke and powder. Open your
doors and/or windows as soon as
possible after the impact in order
to reduce discomfort and prevent
prolonged exposure to smoke and
powder.
Though the smoke and powder are
non-toxic, they may cause irritation
to the skin (eyes, nose and throat,
etc). If this is the case, wash and
rinse with cold water immediatelyand consult a doctor if the symptom
persists.WARNING
To avoid severe personal injury or death caused by
deploying air bags in a colli-
sion, the driver should sit as
far back from the steering
wheel air bag as possible (at
least 250 mm (10 inches)
away). The front passengers
should always move their
seats as far back as possible
and sit back in their seat.
Air bags inflate instantly in the event of a collision, and pas-
sengers may be injured by the
air bag expansion force if they
are not in a proper position.
Air bag inflation may cause injuries including facial or
bodily abrasions, injuries
from broken glasses or burns.

Curtain air bag (if equipped)
Curtain air bags are located along
both sides of the roof rails above the
front and rear doors. They are designed to help protect theheads of the front seat occupantsand the rear outboard seat occupants
in certain side impact collisions.
The curtain air bags are designed to
deploy during certain side impact
collisions, depending on the crash
severity, angle, speed and point of
impact. However, when side deploy-ment threshold is satisfied at front-
impact, side air bags may deploy.
The curtain air bags may deploy on
the side of the impact or on both side.
The curtain air bags are not
designed to deploy in all side
impacts or rollover situations.
✽✽
NOTICE - if equipped with
rollover sensor
Also, both sides of the curtain air bags deploy in certain rollover sit-
uations.
The curtain air bag may deploy when the rollover sensor detects
the situation as a rollover.
❈The actual air bags in the vehicle may differ
from the illustration.

Never place or insert any
object into any small opening
near side airbag labels
attached to the vehicle seats.
When the air bag deploys, the
object may affect the deploy-
ment and result in unexpected
accident or bodily harm.
WARNING - No attaching objects
Do not place any objects over the air bag or between the air
bag and yourself. Also, do not
attach any objects around the
area the air bag inflates such
as the door, side door glass,
front and rear pillar.
Do not place any objects between the door and the
seat. They may become dan-
gerous projectiles if the side
air bag inflates.
Do not install any accessories on the side or near the side air
bags.

Air bag inflation conditions
Front air bags
Front air bags are designed to inflate in a frontal collision depending on
the intensity, speed or angles ofimpact of the front collision.❈The actual air bags in the vehicle may dif-
fer from the illustration.
Side and curtain air bags (if equipped) Side and curtain air bags aredesigned to inflate when an impact is
detected by side collision sensorsdepending on the strength, speed orangles of impact resulting from aside impact collision.
Although the front air bags (driver’s
and front passenger’s air bags) aredesigned to inflate only in frontal col-
lisions, they also may inflate in othertypes of collisions if the front impactsensors detect a sufficient impact.
Side air bags (side and/or curtain airbags) are designed to inflate only in
side impact collisions, but they mayinflate in other collisions if the sideimpact sensors detect a sufficientimpact.
If the vehicle chassis is impacted by
bumps or objects on unimproved
roads or sidewalks, air bags may
deploy. Drive carefully on unim-
proved roads or on surfaces not
designed for vehicle traffic to prevent
unintended air bag deployment.
✽✽
NOTICE - For Europe
Also, the side and curtain air bags are
designed to inflate when a rollover is
detected by a rollover sensor.

Door lock/unlock features
Impact sensing door unlock system
All doors will automatically unlock when an impact causes the air bags
to deploy.
However, automatic door unlock will
not operate if the side airbag is notequipped.

NOTICE
An authorized Kia dealer can acti-
vate or deactivate some auto door
lock/unlock features as follows;
Auto door unlock by using the dri- ver's door lock button
Speed sensing auto door lock
Auto door lock/unlock by shifting the transmission shift lever out of
P (Park) or into P (Park
Auto door unlock when the igni- tion key is removed from the igni-
tion switch (for smart key, when
the ENGINE START/STOP button
is changed to the OFF position)
If you want to activate or deactivate
some door lock/unlock feature, we
recommend that you consult an
authorized Kia dealer.
Child-protector rear door lock
The child safety lock is provided to
help prevent children from acciden-tally opening the rear doors from
inside the vehicle. The rear door
safety locks should be used whenev-
er children are in the vehicle.
1. Open the rear door.
2. Push the child safety lock located on the rear edge of the door to the
lock ( ) position. When the child
safety lock is in the lock position,
the rear door will not open eventhough the inner door handle ispulled. 3. Close the rear door.
To open the rear door, pull the out- side door handle (1) .
Even though the doors may be
unlocked, the rear door will not open
by pulling the inner door handle (2)
until the rear door child safety lock is
unlocked ( ).

WARNING
- Rear door
locks
If children accidentally open the
rear doors while the vehicle is
in motion, they could fall out
and be severely injured or
killed. To prevent children from
opening the rear doors from the
inside, the rear door safety
locks should be used whenever
children are in the vehicle.
