
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
To help avoid personal injury, pleaseread and understand the limitationsof the system as contained in thissection. Sensing is only an aid for some(generally large and fixed) objects whenmoving on a flat surface at parking speeds.Certain objects with surfaces that absorbultrasonic waves, surrounding vehicle'sparking aid systems, traffic controlsystems, fluorescent lamps, inclementweather, air brakes, and external motorsand fans may also affect the function ofthe sensing system. This may includereduced performance or a false activation.
To help avoid personal injury, alwaysuse caution when in reverse (R) andwhen using the sensing system.
This system is not designed toprevent contact with small or movingobjects. The system is designed toprovide a warning to assist the driver indetecting large stationary objects to avoiddamaging your vehicle. The system maynot detect smaller objects, particularlythose close to the ground.
Certain add-on devices such as largetrailer hitches, bike or surfboard racksand any device that may block thenormal detection zone of the system, maycreate false beeps.
Note:Keep the sensors, located on thebumper or fascia, free from snow, ice andlarge accumulations of dirt. If the sensorsare covered, the system’s accuracy can beaffected. Do not clean the sensors withsharp objects.
Note:If your vehicle sustains damage tothe bumper or fascia, leaving it misalignedor bent, the sensing zone may be alteredcausing inaccurate measurement ofobstacles or false alarms.
Note:The sensing system cannot be turnedoff when a MyKey is present. See Principleof Operation (page 61).
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with atrailer tow package and a trailer isconnected to your vehicle, the rear sensingsystem disables and you cannot switch thesystem on through the information display.
The sensing system warns the driver ofobstacles within a certain range of yourvehicle. The system turns on automaticallywhenever you switch the ignition on.
When receiving a detection warning, theradio volume reduces to a predeterminedlevel. After the warning goes away, theradio volume returns to the previous level.
You can turn the system on oroff by pressing the parking aidbutton. If your vehicle does nothave a parking aid button, the system canbe switched off through the informationdisplay menu or from the pop-up messagethat appears once you shift thetransmission into reverse (R). See GeneralInformation (page 111).
If a fault is present in the system, a warningmessage appears in the informationdisplay and you cannot switch the systemon through the pop-up message. SeeInformation Messages (page 128).
REAR PARKING AID
The rear sensors are only active when thetransmission is in reverse (R). As yourvehicle moves closer to the obstacle, therate of the audible warning increases.When the obstacle is less than 12 in(30 cm) away, the warning soundscontinuously. If the system detects a

•Press SET+ or SET- to change the setspeed in small increments.
•Press the accelerator or brake pedaluntil you reach the desired speed. PressSET+ or SET-.
•Press and hold SET+ or SET-. Releasethe control when you reach the desiredspeed.
Canceling the Set Speed
Press CNCL or tap the brake pedal. Theset speed does not erase.
Resuming the Set Speed
Press RES.
Switching Cruise Control Off
Note:You erase the set speed when youswitch the system off.
Press OFF when the system is in standbymode or switch the ignition off.
USING ADAPTIVE CRUISE
CONTROL (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
Always pay close attention tochanging road conditions when usingadaptive cruise control. The systemdoes not replace attentive driving. Failingto pay attention to the road may result ina crash, serious injury or death.
Adaptive cruise control is not a crashwarning or avoidance system.
Adaptive cruise control does notdetect stationary or slow movingvehicles below 6 mph (10 km/h).
Adaptive cruise control does notdetect pedestrians or objects in theroad.
WARNINGS
Adaptive cruise control does notdetect oncoming vehicles in thesame lane.
Do not use adaptive cruise controlon winding roads, in heavy traffic orwhen the road surface is slippery.This could result in loss of vehicle control,serious injury or death.
Do not use adaptive cruise controlwith a snow plow blade installed.
Do not use adaptive cruise controlwhen towing a trailer that has trailerbrakes. The auto-brake componentof the adaptive cruise control system doesnot operate the trailer brakes. Usingadaptive cruise control when towing atrailer that has trailer brakes may result inthe loss of vehicle control, which couldresult in serious injury.
Do not use tire sizes other than thoserecommended because this canaffect the normal operation of thesystem. Failure to do so may result in a lossof vehicle control, which could result inserious injury.
Note:It is your responsibility to stay alert,drive safely and control the vehicle at alltimes.
The system adjusts your speed to maintaina proper distance between you and thevehicle in front of you in the same lane. Youcan select from one of four gap settings.

Cruise Control (If Equipped)

Low Speed AutomaticCancellation
The system does not function at vehiclespeeds below 12.4 mph (20 km/h). Anaudible alarm sounds and the automaticbraking releases if the vehicle drops belowthis speed.
Hilly Condition and Trailer TowUsage
Note:An audible alarm sounds and thesystem shuts down if it applies brakes foran extended period of time. This allows thebrakes to cool. The system functionsnormally again when the brakes havecooled.
Note:When towing with adaptive cruisecontrol, turn on Tow/Haul Mode and DieselEngine Brake.
Select a lower gear when the system isactive in situations such as prolongeddownhill driving on steep grades, forexample in mountainous areas. Thesystem needs additional engine braking inthese situations to reduce the load on thevehicle’s regular brake system to preventit from overheating.
Switching the System Off
Note:The set speed memory erases whenyou switch off the system.
Press and release OFF or switch off theignition.
Detection Issues
WARNING
On rare occasions, detection issuescan occur due to the roadinfrastructures, for example bridges,tunnels and safety barriers. In these cases,the system may brake late orunexpectedly. At all times, you areresponsible for controlling your vehicle,supervising the system and intervening, ifrequired.
The radar sensor has a limited field ofvision. It may not detect vehicles at all ordetect a vehicle later than expected insome situations. The lead vehicle graphicdoes not illuminate if the system does notdetect a vehicle in front of you.

The system uses radar sensors that arelocated inside the tail lamp on each sideof your vehicle. Any dirt, mud and snow infront of the sensors or driving in heavy raincan cause system degradation. Also, othertypes of obstructions in front of the sensorcan cause system degradation. This isreferred to as a ‘blocked’ condition.
Note:Do not apply bumper stickers and/orrepair compound to these areas, this cancause degraded system performance.
If the system detects a degradedperformance condition, a message warningappears in the display screen. The alertindicators remain ON and the system willno longer provides any warnings. You canclear the warning but the alert indicatorsremain illuminated.
A "blocked" condition can be cleared intwo ways:
•After the blockage in front of thesensors is removed or therainfall/snowfall rate decreases orstops, drive for a few minutes in trafficto allow the sensors to detect passingvehicles.
•By cycling the ignition from ON to OFFand then back ON.
Note:If your vehicle has a tow bar with afactory equipped trailer tow module and itis towing a trailer, the sensors willautomatically turn the Blind SpotInformation System off. If your vehicle hasa tow bar but no factory equipped trailertow module, it is recommended to turn theBlind Spot Information System offmanually. Operating the Blind SpotInformation System without the Blind SpotTrailer Tow package and a trailer attachedwill cause poor system performance.
Blind Spot Information Systemwith Trailer Tow (If Equipped)
The Blind Spot Information System withTrailer Tow is designed to aid you indetecting vehicles that may have enteredthe detection area zone (A). The detectionarea is on both sides of your vehicle andtrailer, extending rearward from theexterior mirrors to the end of your trailer.
When a trailer is attached and thecustomer has set up a Blind Spot Trailer,the Blind Spot Information System withTrailer Tow becomes active when drivingforward above 6 mph (10 km/h). SeeTrailer Reversing Aids (page 269).
The Blind Spot Information System withTrailer Tow can be turned off in theinstrument cluster. If the Blind SpotInformation System is turned off, then theBlind Spot Information System with TrailerTow automatically turns off.

System Operation
If you select a trailer in the display screenprior to connecting the trailer, the systemwill load that configuration and theinformation cluster displays a messagewhen the trailer is connected. A secondmessage appears stating Cross TrafficAlert has been turned off; the Blind SpotInformation System with Trailer Tow stillfunctions normally when driving forward.
If no trailer has been set up and a trailer isconnected, the instrument cluster providesa message indicating a trailer is connectedfollowed by a message asking to select atrailer from the existing list of trailers or toadd a trailer. In order for the Blind SpotInformation System with Trailer Tow tofunction, an existing trailer must beselected or a new trailer must be added. Ifthe request is ignored or if you exit thescreen, a message appears prompting youthat the system has been turned off dueto a trailer connect. This message may notappear until your vehicle speed reaches22 mph (35 km/h).
The Blind Spot Information System withTrailer Tow activates when driving forwardfor that particular trailer set up. If theignition is cycled, the Blind SpotInformation System with Trailer Towcontinues to function using the last trailerselected.
Trailer Considerations
The Blind Spot Information System withTrailer Tow is designed to work with anytrailer whose front width is 8.5 ft (2.6 m)or less and total length from the trailerhitch ball to the rear of the trailer is 30 ft(9 m) or less. Different trailers may causea slight change in performance as outlinedbelow.
Large box trailers may cause false alertsto trigger when driving next to buildings ornear parking cars. A false alert may alsooccur while making a 90-degree turn.
Trailers that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) wide at thefront and have a total length greater than20 ft (6 m) may have delayed alerts frompassing vehicles when the vehicle ispassing at high speed.
A box trailer whose front width is 8.5 ft(2.6 m) may cause early alerts when youare over taking a vehicle.
When towing a clam shell or V-Nose boxtrailer with a front width of 8.5 ft (2.6 m),delayed alerts on merging vehicles that aretraveling the same speed as your vehiclemay occur.
System Errors
If the system senses a problem with theleft or right sensor, the telltale illuminatesand a message appears in the displayscreen. See Information Messages(page 128).
Switching the System Off and On
You can temporarily switch the Blind SpotInformation System off in the displayscreen. See General Information (page111). When the Blind Spot InformationSystem switches off, you do not receivealerts and the display screen shows asystem off message. The telltale in thecluster also illuminates. When you switchthe Blind Spot Information System on oroff, the alert indicators flash twice.
Note:The Blind Spot Information Systemremembers the last selected on or offsetting.
You can also have the Blind SpotInformation System switched offpermanently at an authorized dealer. Onceswitched off permanently, the system canonly be switched back on at an authorizeddealer.

System Limitations
Cross Traffic Alert has its limitations;situations such as severe weatherconditions or debris build-up on the sensorarea may limit vehicle detection.
The following are other situations that maylimit the Cross Traffic Alert performance:
•Adjacently parked vehicles or objectsobstructing the sensors.
•Approaching vehicles passing atspeeds greater than 37 mph(60 km/h).
•Driving in reverse faster than 7 mph(12 km/h).
•Backing out of an angled parking spot.
False Alerts
Note:If your vehicle has a tow bar with afactory equipped trailer tow module and itis towing a trailer, the sensors willautomatically turn the Cross Traffic Alertoff. If your vehicle has a tow bar but nofactory equipped trailer tow module, it isrecommended to turn the Cross Traffic Alertoff manually. Operating Cross Traffic Alertwith a trailer attached will cause poor CrossTraffic Alert performance.
There may be certain instances when thereis a false alert by the Cross Traffic Alertsystem that illuminates the alert indicatorwith no vehicle in the coverage zone. Someamount of false alerts are normal; they aretemporary and self-correct.
System Errors
If Cross Traffic Alert senses a problem withthe left or right sensor a message appearsin the display screen. See InformationMessages (page 128).
Switching the System Off and On
Note:The Cross Traffic Alert switches onwhenever the ignition is switched on andready to provide appropriate alerts whenthe transmission is in reverse (R). CrossTraffic Alert will not remember the lastselected on or off setting.
You can temporarily switch Cross TrafficAlert off in the information display. SeeGeneral Information (page 111). Whenyou switch Cross Traffic Alert off, you donot receive alerts and the display screenshows a system off message.
You can also have Cross Traffic Alertswitched off permanently at an authorizeddealer. Once switched off permanently,the system can only be switched back onat an authorized dealer.
STEERING
Power Steering
To help prevent damage to the powersteering system:
•Never hold the steering wheel at itsfurthest turning points (until it stops)for more than three seconds when theengine is running.
•Do not operate the vehicle with a lowpower steering pump fluid level (belowthe MIN mark on the reservoir).
•Some noise is normal during operation.If excessive, check for low powersteering pump fluid level beforeseeking service by your dealer.
•Heavy or uneven efforts may be causedby low power steering fluid. Check forlow power steering pump fluid levelbefore seeking service by your dealer.
•Do not fill the power steering pumpreservoir above the MAX mark on thereservoir, as this may result in leaksfrom the reservoir.

When backing down a ramp during boatlaunching or retrieval:
•Do not allow the static water level torise above the bottom edge of the rearbumper.
•Do not allow waves to break higherthan 6 in (15 cm) above the bottomedge of the rear bumper.
Exceeding these limits may allow water toenter vehicle components:
•Causing internal damage to thecomponents.
•Affecting driveability, emissions, andreliability.
Replace the rear axle lubricant anytimethe rear axle has been submerged in water.Water may have contaminated the rearaxle lubricant, which is not normallychecked or changed unless a leak issuspected or other axle repair is required.
TOWING THE VEHICLE ON
FOUR WHEELS
WARNING
If your vehicle has a steering wheellock make sure the ignition is in theaccessory or on position when beingtowed.
Emergency Towing
If your vehicle becomes inoperable(without access to wheel dollies,car-hauling trailer, or flatbed transportvehicle), it can be flat-towed (all wheelson the ground, regardless of the powertrainand transmission configuration) under thefollowing conditions:
•Your vehicle is facing forward fortowing in a forward direction.
•Place the transmission in neutral (N).If you cannot move the transmissioninto neutral (N), you may need tooverride it. See Transmission (page205).
•Maximum speed is 35 mph (56 km/h).
•Maximum distance is 50 mi (80 km).
WARNING
If your vehicle has a steering wheellock make sure the ignition is in theaccessory or on position when beingtowed.
Recreational Towing
Note:Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle. SeeClimate Control (page 145).
Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing, such as towingyour vehicle behind a motorhome. We havedesigned these guidelines to preventdamage to your transmission.
Two-wheel Drive Vehicles
Do not tow your vehicle with any wheelson the ground, as vehicle or transmissiondamage may occur. It is recommended totow your vehicle with all four (4) wheelsoff the ground, such as when using acar-hauling trailer. Otherwise, you cannottow your vehicle.

Four-wheel Drive Vehicles Equippedwith a Manual-shift Transfer Case
1. Put the transmission in neutral (N).
2. Put the transfer case in neutral (N).
3.Put the hub locks in the FREE position.Always make sure that both hub locksare set to the same position.
Four-wheel Drive Vehicles Equippedwith an Electronic-shift Transfer Case
Only tow a four-wheel drive vehicle thathas an electronic-shift transfer case withall wheels on the ground. To do this, placethe transfer case in its neutral position andengage the four-wheel-down towingfeature.
Perform the steps in the following sectionafter positioning your vehicle behind thetow vehicle and properly securing themtogether.
Note:Make sure you properly secure yourvehicle to the tow vehicle.
Four-wheel-down Towing
1. Put the ignition in the on position, butdo not start the engine. If your vehiclehas an ignition key, turn the key to on.If your vehicle has intelligent access,press the engine START/STOP buttononce without pressing the brake pedal.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3. Rotate the four-wheel drive switch to2H.
4. Shift the transmission to neutral (N).
5. Rotate the four-wheel drive switchfrom 2H to 4L and back to 2H fivetimes within seven seconds.
Note:If completed successfully, theinformation display shows a messageindicating that your vehicle is safe to towwith all wheels on the ground.
Note:If you do not see the message in thedisplay, you must perform the procedureagain from the beginning.
Note:You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts into its neutral position.This is normal.
6. Leave the transmission in neutral (N)and turn the ignition as far as it will gotoward the off position (it will not turnfully off when the transmission is inneutral). If your vehicle has an ignitionkey, you must leave the key in theignition while towing. To lock andunlock your vehicle, use the keylessentry keypad or extra set of keys. If yourvehicle has intelligent access, press theengine START/STOP button oncewithout pressing the brake pedal. Youdo not need to leave your keys in thevehicle. You can lock and unlock yourvehicle as you normally do.
7. Release the brake pedal.
WARNINGS
Do not disconnect the battery duringrecreational towing. It prevents thetransfer case from shifting properlyand may cause the vehicle to roll, even ifthe transmission is in park (P).
Shifting the transfer case to itsneutral position for recreationaltowing may cause the vehicle to roll,even if the transmission is in park (P). Itmay injure the driver and others. Make sureyou press the foot brake and the vehicle isin a secure, safe position when you shift toneutral (N).
Note:Failing to put the transfer case in itsneutral position while towing with all fourwheels on the ground will damage vehiclecomponents.
