control unit, the side curtain airbag will not be
tr iggered, even though the car may be bad ly
damaged as a result of the collision. It is not pos­
sible to define an airbag triggering range that
will cover every possib le angle of impact, since
the circumstances will vary considerably between one co llision and another. Important factors in­
clude, for example, the nature (hard or soft) of
the impacting object, the angle of impact, vehicle speed, etc.¢

Aside from their normal safety function, safety
be lts work to help keep the d river or fron t pas­
senger in posit ion in the event of a co llision so
that the side curtain airbags can provide protec ­
tion.
The airbag system is not a s ubst itu te for yo ur
safety belt. Rather, it is part of the overa ll occu­
pant restraint system in your vehicle. Always re­
member that the airbag system can only help to
protect you if you are wearing your safety belt
and wear ing it properly . This is another reason
why you should always wear your safety belts,
not just because the law requires you to do so

It is important to remember that while the side
curtain airbag system is des igned to help reduce
the likelihood of serious injuries, other injuries,
for example, swelli ng, bruising, fr iction burns
and minor abrasions can also be associated with
these airbags upon deployment . Remember too,
these airbags will deploy only once and only in certa in kinds of acc idents - you r safety belts are
always there to offer protection.
The side curtain airbag system basically
consists of:
- T he elec tronic contro l module and external side
impact sensors
- T he side c urtain airbags above the front and
rea r side windows with ejection mitigation fea ­
tures
- T he airbag indicator light in the instrument
panel
The airbag system is monitored elec tronically to
make certain it is f unct ion ing properly at all

times. Each time you switch on the ignition, the
airbag system indicator light wi ll come on for a
few seconds (self d iagnostics).
Th e side curtain airbag is not activ ated:
- if the igni tion is sw itched off,
- in side co llisions when the accele ration meas-
ured by the sensor is too low,
- in rear-end co llisions.

comes when the veh icle is being used, have
the system inspected immediately by your
authorized Audi dealer . It is possib le that
the airbag will inflate when it is not sup­
posed to, or w ill not inf late when it should.
How side curtain airbags work
Side curtain airbags con work together with side
airbags to help reduce the risk of head and upper
torso injuries for occupants who ore properly re­
strained.

When the system is triggered, the side curtain
airbag is filled with propellant gas and breaks
through a seam above the front and rear side
windows identified by the AIRBAG label. In order

use the available th ree -point lap and shoulder
safety belts .
A WARNING
-The rear seat area is too small to safe ly
transport passengers taller than 4 ft 9 in
(57 in/1.45 m).
-
- Persons taller than 4 ft 9 in (57 in/1.45 m) as well as children in booster seats who are
too close to the rear window and roof can
suffer severe head and neck injur ies when
the rear lid is closed o r in a crash.
- The m inimum clearance betwee n the pas­
sengers' heads and the rear window must
never - under any circumstances - be less
than 1 in ( 2.5 cm) whe n the passenge rs s its
f ully up right .
- Always make sure tha t the rear seat passen­
gers canno t be str uck when the rear lid is
cl osed.
Booster seats on the front seat
Ch ild ren aged about 7 years and older and weigh ­
ing more than 55 lbs (25 kg) who are between
4 ft 3 in (5 1 in/1.30 m) and 4 ft 9 in (57 in/
1.45 m) tall may in exceptional circumstances
ride on the front passenger's seat. Children less
than 4 ft 9 in (57 in/1.45 m) tall must s it on a
certified booster seat and properly wear the vehi ­
cle 's three-poin t lap and shoulder safety be lt .
Always securely latch the passenger seat at t he
very rear of its fore and aft adjustment range.
The bac krest must be adjusted to an upr ight po­
sition .
A WARNING
If you must insta ll a booster seat ch ild re­
st raint o n the fro nt passenger sea t:
- Make s ure the booster seat has been de­
s igned and certified by its manufa ctu rer for
use on a front seat wit h a pas senge r fr ont
and side air bag.
- Alw ays follow the m anuf act urer's instruc­
ti on s prov ided with the boos ter sea t.

- Always move the passenger seat to the very
rear o f its fore and aft adjustment range, as
far away from the airbag as possib le.
- Always make sure that the passenger seat is
secure ly latched in place before instal ling
the booster seat. The backrest must be ad­
justed to an upr ight position .
- If the passenger seat cannot be secu rely
latched in the very rear of its fore and aft
ad justment range , then t he passenger front
airbag must be turned off with the ON / OFF
s w itch.
Securing child seats
Securing a child safety seat using a safety
belt
Safety belts for the rear seats and the front pas­
senger can be locked with the convertible locking
retractor to properly secure child safety seats.
The safety belts emergency lock ing retractors for
the rear seats safety be lts and for the front pas­
senger's seat safety be lt have a convert ible lock­
i ng retractor for child restra ints. The safety belt
must be locked so t hat be lt webb ing ca nnot un­
r eel. The retractor ca n be act ivated to lock the
safe ty belt and prevent the safety belt webbing
from loosening up dur ing no rm al driv ing. A chi ld
s a fe ty se at can on ly be prope rly insta lled when
the safety be lt is locked so that the ch ild and
c hi ld safety seat will stay in place .
Always remembe r: E ven thoug h your veh icle is
equipped wi th an Advan ced Airba g system, all
c hi ldren, especially those 12 yea rs and younger,
shou ld always ride in the back seat proper ly re ­
strained for their age and size .
A WARNING
Improperly installed child safety seats in­
crease the r isk of serious personal injury and
death in a co llision .
-
-Always make sure that the safety be lt re­
tractor is locked when installing a c hild
safety seat. An unlocked safety be lt retrac­
to r cannot hold the ch ild safety seat in place
during normal d riving or in a c rash.

A WARNING
-A highly explosive mixture of gases can form
when charging batteries. Only charge the
vehicle battery in well-ventilated areas.
- A drained battery can freeze at tempera­
tures around 32 °F (0 °C). A frozen or
thawed vehicle battery must not be charged
and must not be used anymore. The battery
housing can crack and battery acid can leak
out if ice forms, which increases the risk of
an explosion and chemical burns . Contact an

- Do not connect or disconnect the charging
cable while charging because this increases
the risk of an explosion.

- Only charge the vehicle battery through the
connections in the engine compartment.

Windshield washer system

The windshield washer reservoir{!} contains the
cleaning solution for the windshield and the
headlight washer system*¢
page 246, fig. 189.
The reservoir capacity is found in ¢ page 299.
To reduce the risk of lime scale deposits on the
spray nozzles, use clean water with low amounts
of calcium. Always add window cleaner to the wa­
ter. When the outside temperatures are cold, an
ant i-freezing agent should be added to the water
so that it does not freeze.
(D Note
-The concentration of anti-freezing agent
must be adjusted to the vehicle operating
conditions in the respective cl imate. A con­
centration that is too high can lead to vehi-
cle damage.
- Never add radiator anti-freeze or other addi-
tives to the washer fluid. .,.

Care and cleaning
General information
Regular, proper care helps to maintain your vehi­
cle's value.
It can a lso be a requirement when
submitting warranty claims for corrosion damage
and paint defects on the body.
The necessary care products can be obtained
from an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility . Read and follow the instruc­
tions for use on the packaging.
A WARNING
- Us ing clean ing and care products incorrectly
can be dangerous to your health.
- Always store clean ing and care products out
of reach of children to reduce the r isk of po i­
son ing .
@ For the sake of the environment
- Preferably purchase env ironmenta lly-friend­
l y cleaning products.
- Do not d ispose of leftover cleaning and care
products with household trash.
Car washes
T he longer that deposits remain on the vehicle,
the more the surface may be damaged. High
temperatures such as those caused by sunlight
increase the damag ing effect.
Befor e washing, rinse
off heavy depos its with
p lenty of water.
S tubborn depos its such as bird droppings or tree
sap are best removed with plenty of water and a
microfiber cloth.
A lso, wash t he un derside of yo ur vehicle once
road sa lt stops being used for the season .
Pressure washers
When washi ng your ve hicles w ith a pressure
washer, always follow t he ope rating inst ructions
~ p rovided w ith the pressure washe r. This is espe -
;:::: cially important in regard to the pressu re and
" ~ sp raying distance. Do not d irect the stream of 0
~ water directly onto seals for the side windows, c:o
Ca re and cleaning
doo rs, luggage compartment lid or hood or onto
the tires, rubber hoses, insulating materia l, sen­
sors * or camera lenses*. Keep a distance of at
l east 16 in (40 cm).
Do not remove snow and ice with a pressure
washer.
Never use cone nozz les o r high press ure nozzles .
T he water temperatu re must not be above 140 °F
(60 °().
Automatic car washes
Spray off the vehicle before washing.
Make s ure that the windows are closed and the
windshield wipers a re
off. F o llow instructions
f rom the car wash operator, espec ia lly if there
are accessories attached to your veh icle.
If possible, use car washes that do not have
brushes .
Washing
by hand
Clean the ve hicl e starting from the top and wor k­
i ng down using a soft sponge o r cleaning br ush.
U se solven t-free cleaning produ cts.
Washing vehicles with matte finish paint
by
hand
T o avo id damag ing the pa int w hen washi ng, fi rst
remove dust and large pa rticl es from you r vehi­
cle . Insects, grease spots and fingerprints are
best removed w ith a special cleaner for matte
finish paint.
Apply t he product using a microf iber cloth . To
avoid damaging the paint surface, do not use too
much pressure.
Rinse the ve hicl e thoroug hly w ith wate r. Then
cl ean usi ng a neutral shampoo and a soft micro­
fiber cloth .
Rinse the ve hicl e thorough ly aga in and let it air
dry. Remove any wate r residue using a chamois .
WARNING
- On ly wash the vehicle when the ign ition is
off and follow the instr uctions from the car

The windshie ld may not be treated with wa­
ter-repell ing windshield coating agents . Un­
favorable cond itions s uch as wetness, dark­
ness, or low sun can result i n increased glare.

- N ever clean headlights or ta il lights with a
dry cloth or sponge .
- Do not use any cleaning p rodu ct that con­
tains alcohol, because they co uld cause
cracks to form .
-Wheels
-Never use any paint po lish or other abra-
sive mater ials.

rims such as stone chips or sc ratches must
be repaired immediately.
- Sensors/camera lenses
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
snow or ice from the camera lens . This
could cause the lens to cra ck.
- Never use abrasive cleaning materials or
a lcohol to clean the camera lens. This
could cause s cratches and cracks.
- Door w indow s
- Remove snow and ice on windows and ex -
terior mirrors with a plastic sc rape r. To
avoid scratches, move the scraper only in
one direct ion and not back and forth.
- Neve r remove snow or ice from door win­
dows and mirrors us ing warm or hot water

- Remove cosmetics and sunscreen immedi­
ately- these could damage the paint.
-Instrument cluster
- Make sure that the instrument cluster is
switched
off and has cooled off before
cleaning it.
- The instrument cluster and the trim sur­
rounding it must not be cleaned with dry
cleaning methods because they could get
scratched.
- Make sure no fluids enter the spaces be­
tween the instrument cluster and the
trim, because that could cause damage.
-Controls
- Make sure that no fluids enter the con-
trols, because this could cause damage.
-Safety belts
- Do not remove the safety belts to clean
them.
- Never clean safety belts or their compo­
nents chemically or with corrosive fluids
or solvents and never allow sharp objects
to come into contact with the safety belts.
This could cause damage to the belt web­ bing.
- If there is damage to the webbing, the
connections, the retractors or the buckles

have them replaced by an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility.

- Never treat artificial leather/ Alcantara

Make sure hook and loop fasteners are
closed.

polish, shoe polish, spot remover or simi­
lar products .

damage to the surface.

- To help prevent the leather from fading,
