With all-wheel drive, all four wh eels are driven.
G eneral information
With all-whee l drive, power is distributed to all
four wheels. This happens automatically depend­
ing on you r driv ing style and the road condit ions
at the time. See also¢
page 186 .
A center differentia l distrib utes the driving power
variably to the front and rear axle. It works to­
gether with selective wheel torque control, which
activates when driving t hrough curves
~ page 186.
The all-wheel drive concept is designed for high
engine power. Your vehicle is exceptionally pow­
erful and has excellent driving characterist ics
both under normal dr iv ing condit ions and on
snow and ice . Always read and fo llow safety pre­
cautions ~

Winter tires
When driving in the winter, your vehicle with all­
wheel drive has an advantage, even with regular tires. In winter road conditions it may be adv isa­
b le to mount wi nte r tires (or all-season tires) for
improve d driveab ility and bra king: these tires
m ust be mounted on
all four wheel s. See also

Tire cha ins
Where tire chains are mandatory on certain

Replacing wheels /tires
Veh icles with all-whee l dr ive must always have
tires of the same s ize. A lso avo id tires with d iffer­

-Although the all-wheel d rive is very e ffec ­
tive, always remember that braking capacity
is limited by tire tract ion. You shou ld there­
fore not drive at excessive speeds on icy or
slippery road s urfaces.
- On wet road surfaces, be careful not to dr ive
too fast because the front wheels could be­
gi n to slide on top of t he water (aquapla n­
ing). If th is should occur, you will h ave no
warn ing from a s udden increase i n engine
spee d as wi th a front-wheel d rive vehicle.
Always d rive at speeds which are suited to
the road conditions -risk of crash.
Energy management
· Starting ability is optimized
Energy management controls the distribution of
electrical energy and thus optimizes the availa­
bility of electrical energy for starting the engine .
If a vehicle with a conventional energy system is
not dr iven for a long period of time, the batte ry is
discharged by id ling current consumers (e.g. im­
mobilizer) . In certain c ircumstances it can resu lt
i n the re being insuffic ient energy ava ilable to
start the eng ine.
Intelligent energy management in your vehicle
handles the d istribution of elec trical energy .
Start ing ability is markedly improved and the life
of the batte ry is ex tended.
Bas ically, energy management consists of
bat­
tery diagnosis , idling current man agement
and
dynamic ene rgy management .
Battery diagnos is
Battery d iagnosis continuously determines the
state of the battery. Sensors determine battery
vo ltage , battery current and battery tempera­
ture . This determines the current state o f charge
and the power of the battery .
Idling current management
Idling cur rent management reduces energy con­
sumption while the vehicle is standing. With the ..,.

ignition switched off, it controls the energy sup­
ply to the various electrical components . Data
from battery diagnosis is considered.
Depending on the battery 's state of charge, ind i­
vid ual consumers are gradually turned off to pre ­
ve nt excessive discharge of the battery and thus
maintain starting capability.
Dynamic en ergy management
Wh ile the veh icle is being driven , dynamic energy
management dist ributes the energy ge nerated
according to the needs of the individua l compo ­
nents . It regulates consumption, so that more
e lectrical energy is not being used than is being
generated and ensures an optimal state of
charge for the battery.
- But even energy management cannot neg­
ate the limits of physics. Consider that the power and life of a battery are limited.

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining start­
ing capability .
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traffic and during the co ld time of
year. Abundant electrical energy is required, but only a little is generated . It is also crit ica l if the
engine is not runn ing and electrical components
are turned on . In this instance energy is being
consumed but none is being generated .
It is in precisely these situations that you will no­
tice energy management actively regulat ing the
d istr ibution of energy .
Vehicle stands for an extended p eriod
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of
several days or weeks, electrical components are
gradually cut back or sw itched off. This reduces
energy consumption and ma inta ins starting ca­
pability over a longer pe riod . Some of the con­
ve nience funct ions may not operate, suc h as the
inte rior ligh ts or the powe r seat adjustment. The

convenience functions will be availab le aga in
when you switch on the ignition and sta rt the en­
gine.
With the engine turn ed off
If you listen to the rad io, for examp le, with the
engi ne turned off or use other
MM I* functions,
the battery is being discharged .
If s tarting capab ility is jeopardized due to energy
consumption, a message appears in the rad io or
MM I* disp lay. The message indica tes that the
system will be switched off automatically in a
moment . If you wish to continue using the func ­
t ions, you have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although e lectr ic al energy is generated when t he
vehicle is being driven, the batte ry can become
discharged. This happens mostly when litt le en­
ergy is being generated and a great dea l con­
sumed and the battery's state of charge is not
optimal.
To bring the energy balance back into equilibr i­
um, consumers whic h require especia lly large
amounts of energy are temporari ly cut back or
switched off. Heating systems in particular re­
quire a great deal of energy. If you notice, for ex­
ample, that the heated seats* or the heated rear
window a re not heati ng, they have bee n tempo­
rarily cut bac k or switched off . T hese systems will
be available again as soon as the ene rgy balance
has been restored.
You w ill also notice that engine idle speed has
been increased s light ly. This is no rma l and not a
ca use for concern. By increas ing engine idle
speed the additional energy required is genera t­
ed and the battery is charged.

Care and cleaning
avoid scratches, move the scraper on ly in
one direction and not back and forth.
- Never remove snow or ice from door win­
dows and mirrors using warm or hot water
because this could cause cracks to form .
- To avoid damage to the rear w indow de ­
fogger, do not apply any stickers on the
heating wires on the inside of the window .
-Decorative parts /trim
- Never use chrome care or cleaning prod-
ucts.
-Paint
-To red uce the risk of scratches, the vehicle
must be free of dirt and dust before pol­
ishing or waxing .
- T o prevent pa int damage, do not polish or
wax the veh icle in direct sunlight.
- To red uce the risk of pa int damage, do not
polish away rust spots.
- Remove cosmetics and sunscreen immedi­
ately -these could damage the paint.
- Di spla ys
- To avoid scratches, do not use dry cleaning
methods on displays .
-Controls
- Make sure that no fluids enter the con-
trols, because this could cause damage.
- Safety belts
- Do not remove the safety belts to clean
them.
- Never clean safety belts o r th eir compo­
nents chemically or with cor rosive fl uids
or so lvents and neve r al low sha rp objects
t o come into con ta ct w ith the safe ty belts.
T his could cause damage to the belt web ­
bing .
-If there is damage to the webbing, the
connections, the retractors or the buckles,
have them replaced by an author ized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility.
- Textiles /artificial leather/ Alcantara
- Never treat artificia l leather/ Alcantara
w ith leather care products, so lvents, floor
polish, shoe polish, spot remove or similar
prod uct s.
- Have a specialist remove st ubborn stains
to prevent damage.

sponges, etc . when cleaning .

seat.

p le on clothing, can damage seat covers.
Make sure hook and loop fastene rs are
closed.

- Insects are easier to remove from paint that
has been freshly waxed.
- Regular waxing can prevent rust spots from
forming.
Placing your vehicle out
of service
If you would like to take your vehi cle out of serv­
ice for a longer period of time, contact an author­
ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili­
ty. They will adv ise you of important measures,
such as corrosion protect ion, serv ice and storage
procedures . Also follow the information about
the battery ~
page 225.

Checking and Filling
-Always let the engine cool down. Hot com­
ponents will burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be
seen or heard before carefully opening the
hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when
the engine is still warm. The coolant system
is pressurized and hot coolant could spray
out .
- Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the coolant reservoir.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system .
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever of automatic transmission
to P (Park).

- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts or
other moving parts, or from contacting hot parts . Tie back hair before starting,
and do not wear clothing that will hang or
droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi­
cal hazards

To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly . If you
see spots from oil or other vehicle fluids, have
your vehicle inspected by an authorized Audi dealer.

-Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored
only in the closed original container out of
the reach of children!
- Brake failure can resu lt from old or inappro­
priate brake fluid. Observe these precau­
t ions:
- Use only brake flu id that meets SAE speci­
fication
J 1 703 and confo rms to Fede ral
Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always check
with your author ized Audi dealer to make
sure you are using the correct brake fluid.
The correct type of brake fluid is a lso indi­
cated on the brake flu id reservoir.
- The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use o f
the brakes can cause a vapor lock if the
brake fl uid is left in the system too long.
This can serious ly affect the efficiency of
the brakes as well as your safety. This
could result in an acc ident.
Brake fluid w ill damage the pa int of yo ur vehi­
cle.
@) For the sake of the environment
Because of the prob lem of proper disposal of
brake flu id as we ll as the special tools re­
qui red and the necessary expertise, we rec­
ommend that you have the brake fluid
changed by your author ized Audi dealer.
Battery
General information
Under normal operating conditions, the battery
in your Audi does not need any maintenance.
W ith
high outside temperatures or long da ily
drives we recommend that you have the electro­ lyte level checked by an authorized Audi dea ler or
qua lified workshop. The e lectrolyte level should
a lso be checked each t ime the batte ry is charged
¢ page 22 7.
H ave the battery checked when you take your ve­
hi cle in for serv ice. You a re well advised to re­
p lace a batte ry that is o lde r than 5 years .

Disconnecting the battery te rminals
Some vehi cle functions (power window regula ­
tors, for examp le) are lost if the batte ry te rm i­
nals a re disconnected . These functions have to be
re learned after the battery terminals a re con­
nected again. To prevent this, the battery should
only be disconnected from the vehicle electrical
system when absolutely necessary for repa irs.
Vehicles not dr iven for long p eriod s
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of
severa l days or weeks, electrical compone nts are
gradually cut back or switched off. This reduces
energy consumpt ion and maintains starting ca­
pability over a longer per iod

T ake into consideratio n that when you unlock
your vehicle, some convenience functions, suc h
as the inter ior lights or the power seat adjust­
ment, may not be ava ilab le. The conve nience
funct ions will be available again when you turn
on the ignition and sta rt the eng ine.
Winter operation
D uring the winter months, battery capacity tends
to decrease as temperatures drop. This is be­
cause more power is also consumed while start­
i ng, and the headlights, rear w indow defogger,
etc., are used more ofte n.
Avo id unnecessary power consumption, pa rtic u­
larly in city traff ic or when traveling only short
distances . Let your author ized Audi dealer check
the capacity of the veh icle batte ry before winter
sets in

A WARNING
Whenever work ing on the battery or on the
elect rical system, there is the risk of inju ry,
accident and even fire. Read and heed the fol­
lowing WARN INGS:
- Always we ar eye pro tection. Do not let bat­
tery acid or any lead particles get on your
skin or clothing. Shield your eyes . Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury .
- Battery acid con tains su lfu ric acid . Sulfur ic
acid can cause blindness and severe b urns.
- Always wear gloves and eye protection. Do
not tilt the battery because acid could leak
out of the ventilat ion open ings.
- If you get battery ac id in your eyes or on
your skin, immediately rinse with cold wa­
ter for several minutes and get medical at­
tention .

-If you should ingest any batte ry acid, seek
medical attention immediate ly.
- Do not expose the battery to an open flame,
electric sparks or an open light.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not interchange t he positive and nega -
tive cables .
- When working on t he ba ttery, be sure not to
short -circuit the termina ls with tools or o th­
er metal objects. This would cause the bat­
tery to heat up very quickly, which could lead to damage or exp losion and personal
injury .
- When a battery is charged, it produces hy­
drogen gas which is explosive and could
cause persona l injury.
- Always keep the battery well out of the
reach of children.
- Before wo rk is done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negative ground cable.
- Before performing any work on the e lectri­
cal system, sw itch off the engine and ign i­
tion as well as any electrical equ ipment. The
negat ive cab le on the battery must be dis­
connected . If you a re just going to replace a
light bulb, then it is enough to switch off
the l ights.
- Before d isconnecting the battery, switch off
the anti-theft alarm system ! Otherwise you
will set off the alarm.
- When disconnecting the battery, first dis­
connect the negative cable and then the
positive cable.
- Before reconnect ing the battery, make sure
all electr ica l cons umers a re switched off.
Reconnect the positive cable firs t and then
the negative cable . Never in terchange the
cables -this could start a fire !
- Never cha rge a fro zen or a t hawe d-ou t bat­
tery . It co uld explode! If a ba tte ry has fro­
ze n, then it must be replaced. A discharged
battery can freeze over at 32°F (0°() .
- Ma ke sure the vent hose is always attached
to the opening on the side of the battery .
- Never use bat teries which a re damaged.
There is the danger of an exp losion! Always
replace a damaged battery .

of on ly 32 °F (0 °C). Allow a frozen batte ry to

Battery charging (Maximum charging rate of

le charger ),

disconnected first. The battery caps should
not
be opened when cha rging a battery.
It is no t necessary to remove the bat tery from
the luggage compartment .
Fast charging the battery (charging rate
above 14 .8 Volts)
F or technical rea sons do not use a batte ry charg­
er that uses vo ltage greater than 14.8 Vo lts to
c h arge your veh icle's battery .

-Charging a battery can be dangerous.

-Always follow the operating instructions
provided by the battery charger manufactur­
er when charging your battery.
- Never charge a frozen battery . It may ex­
plode because of gas trapped in the ice. Al­
low a frozen battery to thaw out first.
- Do not reuse batteries which were frozen .
The battery housing may have cracked and
weakened when the battery froze .
- Charge the battery in a well ventilated area.
Keep away from open flame or electrical
spark . Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas generat ­
ed by the battery is explosive .
- To reduce the danger of explosion, never
connect or disconnect charger cables while
the charger is operating .
- Fast charging a battery is dangerous and should only be attempted by a competent
technician with the proper equipment .
- Battery acid that may spill during charging should be washed off with a solution of
warm water and baking soda to neutralize
the acid.
(D Note
Never use a fast charger as a booster to start
the engine. This will seriously damage sensi­
tive electronic components, such as control
units , relays , radio, etc., as well as the battery
charger.
Battery replacement
The new battery must have the same specifica­
tions and dimensions as the original equipment
battery.
Intelligent energy management in your vehicle is
responsible for distributing the electrical energy
throughout your vehicle
~ page 192. The intelli­
gent energy management system will keep the
engine battery charged better then vehicles with­
out this system. To mak e sure the additional
electrical energy is available once again after you
have changed the battery, we recommend that
you install batteries of the same type and manu­ facture only (the same as those installed at the
time your vehicle was delivered) . Specifications

are listed on the battery housing. Your author­
ized dealer must cod e the battery in the energy
management system to enable you to use the en­
ergy management functions correctly after re­
placing the battery.
If it is not possible to use a battery of this type,
the new battery must have the same capacity,
voltage (12 volts), amperage, construction and plug sealing.
When installing the battery, make sure the igni­
tion and all electrical consumers are turned off.
([) Note
- Make sure the ventilation hose on the side
of the battery is connected, otherwise
fumes or battery acid can leak out.
- Vehicles with the Start-Stop-System* are
equipped with a special cycle-proof AGM
battery. Installing a different type of bat­
tery can cause problems in the vehicle elec­
trical system. When replacing the vehicle battery, always install one with the same
specifications as the original battery.
@ For the sake of the environment
Because of the problem of proper disposal of
a battery, we recommend your authorized
Audi dealer change the battery for you. Bat­
teries contain sulfuric acid and lead and must
always be disposed of properly in compliance
with all environmental regulations. Disposing
of vehicle batteries improperly is
very danger­
ous to the environment.
