- If the indicator light and the message appear
when the vehicle is stationary or after switch­
ing the ignition on, check if you can release the
parking brake. If you cannot release the park­
ing brake, see your authorized Audi dealer or
authorized Audi Service Facility . If you can re­
lease the parking brake and the message still
appears, see an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility immediately to
have the malfunction corrected.
- If the indicator light and message appear while
driving, the hill start assist or emergency brak­
ing function may be malfunctioning.
It may not
be possible to set the parking brake or release
it once it has been set. Do not park your vehicle
on hills. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance.

If the 1111 and l'IJ turn on at the same time, the
brake pads are worn out

partment before opening the hood and
checking the brake fluid level.
- If the brake system indicator light does not
turn off or it turns on while driving, the brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low,
and this increases the risk of an accident.
Stop the vehicle and do not continue driv­
ing. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance.
- If the brake system indicator light turns on
together with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
be malfunctioning. Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer available. This
could cause the vehicle to swerve, which in­
creases the risk that the vehicle will slide.
Do not continue driving. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili­
ty for assistance.

- Never ope n the hood if you can see or hear
steam or coola nt escaping from t he engine
compar tment . This increases the risk of
burns. Wa it until you no longer see o r hear

- The engine compartment in any vehicle can

D Alternator/vehicle battery
• Electrical system: m alfunction! Battery is
not being charged
There is a ma lfunction in the a lternato r or the ve ­
hicle electrical system.
D rive to an authorized A udi dealer or authorized
Audi Se rvice Facility immediate ly. Beca use the ve­
hicle battery is discharging, turn off a ll unneces ­
sa ry electrical equ ipment such as the rad io. See
your authorized Audi dea ler or authorized Audi
Service Facility if the batte ry charge level is too
l ow .

while driving
The starting ability may be impa ired . ...

Driver information s ystem
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip ­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the rig ht of the hood
release
c:> fig. 14.
Your author ized Audi dealer or a qualified service
station can interpret the code and perform the necessary repa ir.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for pe r­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli­
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your veh icle may be factory equipped wi th t ires
that a re rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph
(2 10 km/h) . This is less than the maxim um speed
of yo ur vehicle. To reduce t he risk of s udden tire
fa ilu re and loss o f control if the veh icle is operat ­
e d at excessive speeds, yo ur vehicle a lso has an
electronic speed limiter . The electronic speed
lim ite r prevents your veh icle from going faster
than the t ire speed rating. For more information
c:>page 217.
I f the en gine contro l unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed s ignals, the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL)
II will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Aud i dealer for
assis tance .
S models
Your veh icle's top speed is e lectron ica lly limited
to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If th e engine contro l unit receives faul ty vehi cle
roadspeed signa ls, the Malfunct io n Indicator
Lamp (MIL)
¢4 will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest autho rized Audi dealer for
assistance .
A WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits and
adjust you r speed to s uit prevailing road, traf­
fic and weathe r con ditions. Never driv e you r

Driving
In the normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Select the
spo rt mode S for sporty driving. The
vehicle makes full use of the engine 's power.
Shifting is more noticeable when accelerating.
To move from selector lever position N to D, you must press the brake pedal and the vehicle must
be traveling less than 1 mph (2 km/h) or be sta­
tionary

A WARNING
-The vehicle can roll even if the ignition is
switched off .
- Never select R or P while driving, because this increases the risk of an accident.
-
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must keep your foot on the brake in all selector
lever positions (except P) when the engine is
running . Otherwise , this increases the risk
of an accident.
- Do not inadvertently press the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is stopped if a gear is
engaged. Otherwise the vehicle will start to
move immediately, even if the parking brake
is set. This could result in a crash.
- To decrease the risk of an accident, these­
lector lever must be in the P position and
the parking brake must be set before open­
ing the hood and working on a running en­
gine. Always read and follow the applicable
warnings

(D Tips
- Drive select: sporty shifting characteristics
can be selected using the
Dynamic driving
mode .Swill appear in the instrument clus­
ter display instead of D.
- If you accidentally select N while driving, take your foot off the accelerator pedal and
wait for the engine to slow down to idle be­
fore selecting D/S.

- If there is a power failure, the selector lever
will not move out of the P position. The
emergency release can be used if this hap­
pens

Selector lever lock
The selector lever lock prevents you from select­
ing a gear accidentally, causing the vehicle to
roll .

lock button.
Automatic shift lock (ASL)
The selector lever is locked in the P and N posi­
tions when the ignition is switched on. The re­
move it from these positions , the driver must
press the brake pedal and press the lock button
at the same time . The following message ap­
pears in the instrument cluster display when the
selector lever is in the P or N position to remind
the driver:
Brake pedal must be applied to shift from P
The automatic shift lock only functions when the
vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph
(2 km/h) . At higher speeds, the lock is automati­
cally deactivated in the N position .
The selector lever is not locked when shifting
quickly through N, for example from R to D. This
makes it possible to free the vehicle when it is
stuck by "rocking " it. The selector lever lock en-
gages if the lever stays in the N position longer .,..

A WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag in­
flates, always wear safety belts properly.
- If you are unrestrained, lean ing forward, sit­
t ing s ideways or out of pos ition in anyway,
your risk of injury is much h igher.
- You will also receive serious injur ies and
could even be killed if you are up aga inst the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag¢
page 147.
More important things to know about front
airbags

Safety belts are important to help keep front
seat occupants in the p roper seated position so
that a irbags can unfold properly and provide sup­
p lemental protection in a frontal collision.
The front airbags are designed to provide addi­
tional protection for the chest a nd face of the
d river and the front seat passenger when:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- the seats have been positioned so that the oc-
cupant is properly seated as far as possible
from the airbag,
- and for adjustable head restraints: the head re-
straints have been properly adjusted.
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye with
great force, things you have on your lap or have placed on the seat could become dangerous pro­
jectiles, and be pushed into you if the airbag in­
flates .
When an a irbag deploys, fine dust is released .
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the
veh icle. Th is dust is made up mostly of a powder
Airb ag sys tem
used to lubricate the airbags as they deploy. It
could irritate skin.
It is important to remember that wh ile the sup­
plementa l airbag system is designed to red uce
the likelihood of serious injuries, other injur ies,
for example swelling, bruising and minor abra­ s ions, can also happen when airbags inflate. Air­
bags do not protect the arms or the lower parts
of the body. Front airbags supplement the three­
point safety belts on ly in some frontal collisions
in which the vehicle deceleration is high e nough
to deploy the airbags .
Fron t airb ags will not depl oy:
- if the ignition is switched off when a crash oc-
curs,
- in side collisions,
- in rear-end collisions,
- in rollovers,
- when t he crash deceleration measured by the
airbag system is less than the m in imum thresh­
old needed for airbag dep loyment as registe red
by the electronic control unit.
Th e front passenger airbag also will not
deplo y:
- when the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- when the e lectr ica l ca pacitance measured by
the capacitive passenger detection system for
the front passenger seat indicates that the pas­
senger s ide frontal a irbag must be switched off
by the electronic control unit (the
PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light¢ page 159 and how they
work comes on and stays on).
A WARNING
-Sitt ing in the wrong position can increase the
risk of ser ious injury in crashes.
- To reduce the risk of injury when the airbags
inflate, the drive r and passengers must al­
ways sit in an up right posit ion, must not
lea n aga inst or place any part of their body
too close to the area where the airbags are located .
- Occupants who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be serio usly
injured by an airbag as it unfolds with great
force in the blink of an eye¢

A WARNING
-Never open the hood when there is steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned. Wait unt il no steam or coolant is
escaping.
- For safety reasons, the hood m ust always be
closed securely while driv ing. Because of
this, always check the hood after closing it
to make sure it is latched correctly . The
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted.
- If you no tice that t he hood is not latched
while you are driving, stop immediate ly and
close it, because driving when the hood is
not latched increases the r isk of an accident.
