protection
Applies to: ve hicles with Audi pre sense
Pre sense can initiate steps to protect vehicle oc
cupants in certain dangerous situations. The
functions described are available depending on
veh icle equ ipment:
P re sen se basi c*
T he following functions can be triggered in cer
tain driving situations:
- Tensioning of the safety belts (for example,
during heavy braking) : the front safety belts
have reversible belt tensioners. If a collision
does not occur, the safety belts loosen slightly
and are ready to trigger again .
- Closing the w indows and the sunroof* (for ex
ample, when over- or understeer ing) : the win
dows and the sunroof* close until there is only
a small gap open .
The function of the pre sense basic is act ivated at
a speed of 20 mph (30 km/h) or higher .
Drive se lect: the deployment time is adapted in
D yna mic mode .
Pre sense f ront (v e hi cles with adaptiv e cruis e
contr ol*)
Pre sense front contains the functions of pre
sense basic . In addition, the likelihood of a rear
end collision with the vehicle ahead is also calcu
lated, within the limits of the system. If the risk
of a collision is detected, the following functions
can trigger:
- Braking guard
c> page 93
- Tensioning of the safety belts
- Closing the windows and the sunroof*
Pre s ense rear (vehicles with side assi st* )
Pre sense rear contains the functions of pre sense
bas ic. In addit ion, the l ikel ihood of a rear-end
coll is ion from the vehicle behind is a lso ca lculat
ed, w ithin the limits of the system. If the risk of a
collision is detected, the following functions can
trigger:

A WARNING
=
Pre sense cannot overcome natural phys ica l
laws. It is a system designed to assist and it
cannot prevent a collision . Do not let the in
creased safety provided tempt you into tak ing
r isks. This could inc rease your risk of a colli
sion.
- The system can dep loy incorrectly .
- Please note that the sensors do not always
detect a ll objects . T hi s increases the r isk of
a co llision.
- Pre sense does not react to people or ani
mals or objects that are cross ing the vehi
cle's path o r are diffic ult to detect

Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri
ous injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly pos itioned on the body .
Improper seating positions reduce the effect ive

positions also increase the risk of serious inj ury
and death when an airbag deploys and strikes an
occ upant who is not in the correct seat ing posi
tion. A driver is respons ible for the safety of all
vehicle occupants and espec ia lly for children.
Therefore:

Belt tensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear-end collisions above a
particular severity and in a rollover, safety belts are tensioned automatically.
Rever sible safety belt tensioner s
The safety belts on the front seats are equipped
with power reversible tensioners. The following
funct ions are available when the dr iver's/front
passenger's safety belts are fastened:
- Automatic tens ioners: at the start of a drive,
the safety belts automatically adjust to the passenger after a certain time period or vehicle
speed. To switch the automatic tensioners off,
select the following in the MMI :
!CARI function
button
> (Car )* system s > Vehicle setting s >
Seats > Driver's seat or Passeng er' s s eat > Au
tom atic belt ten sioner

-The safety be lts may also tigh ten with this re-
versible tension ing function in m inor collisions.
Pyrotechnic safety belt pretens ioners
The safety belts are equipped w it h safety belt
prete nsioners. The system is activated by sensors
in front, side and rear -end collisions of great se
verity and in a ro llover. This tightens the belt and
takes up belt slack
q .& in Service and disposal of
safety belt pretensioner on page 146.
Taking up
the slack he lps to reduce forward occupant
movement during a collision.
A WARNING
--
- It is poss ible for the pretensioners to dep loy
incorrectly.
- The pyrotechnic system can only provide
protection for one collision. If the pyrotech
n ic pretens ioners deploy, the pretensioning
system must be replaced.
145

Safety belts
(D Tips
The pyrotechnic safety be lt pretensioners can
only deploy once.
- The safety belt pretensioners do not deploy
in minor frontal, side and rear-end co lli
sions.
- A fine dust is released when the pyrotechnic
safety be lt pretensioners deploy. This is nor
mal and is not caused by a fire in the vehi
cle.
- The relevant safety requirements must be
observed when the vehicle or components
of the system are scrapped. A qualified
dealership is familiar with these regulations
and will be pleased to pass on the informa
tion to you.
- Be sure to observe all safety, environmental
and other regulations if the veh icle or indi
v idual parts of the system, pa rticula rly the
safety be lt o r airbag, are to be disposed . We
recommend you have your authorized Audi
dealer perform this service for you.
Service and disposal of safety belt preten
sioner
The safety belt pretensioners are parts of the
safety belts on your Audi. Installing, removing,
servicing or repairing of belt pretensioners can
damage the safety belt system and prevent it
from working correctly in a collision.
There are some important things you have to
know to make sure that the effectiveness of the
system w ill not be impaired and that discarded
components do not cause injury or pollute the
environment.
_& WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce
dures can increase the risk of personal injury
and death by preventing a safety belt preten
sioner from activating when needed or acti
vating it unexpectedly :
- The belt pretensioner system can be activat
ed only once.
If belt pretensioners have
been act ivated, the system must be re
placed .
146
-Never repair, adjust, or change any parts of
the safety belt system .
- Safety belt systems including safety belt
pretensioners cannot be repaired . Spec ial
procedures are required for removal, instal
lation and disposal of this system.
- For any work on the safety belt system, we
strongly recommend that you see your au
thorized Audi dealer or qualified technician
who has an Audi approved repa ir manual,
tra ining and special equipment necessary .

Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that t he Advanced Airbag System
pe rforms in a crash. For examp le, using tire-r im
comb inat ions no t approved by Audi, lowering the
ve hicle, changing the s tiffness of the suspens ion,
includ ing the springs, suspension struts, shock
absorbers etc . can change the forces that are
measured by the airbag sensors and sent to the
e lectronic contro l unit . Some suspens ion changes
can, for example, increase the force levels meas
ured by the sensors and make the airbag system
deploy in crashes in wh ich it would not dep loy if
the changes had no t been made. Other kinds of
Airb ag sys tem
changes may red uce the force levels measured by
the sensors and prevent the airbag from deploy
i ng when it sho uld.
A WARNING
=
Changing the vehicle's suspension including
use of unapproved tire-rim combinations can
change Advanced Airbag performance a nd in
crease the risk of serious personal injury in a
crash.
- Never install suspension components that do not have the same performance charac
ter istics as the components origina lly instal
led on you r vehi cle.
- Never use tire-rim combinations that have
not been approved by Audi.

Gasoline additives
A ma jo r concern among many auto manufactur
e rs is carbon deposit build-up caused by the type
of gasoline you use.
A lthough gasoline grades d iffer from one manu
facturer to ano ther, they have certain things in
common . All gasoline grades contain substances
that can cause deposits to collect on v ita l eng ine
parts, such as fuel injectors and intake valves. Al
though most gasoline brands include additives to
keep engine and fuel systems clean, they are not
equally effective.
Audi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent Gas
oline. For more informat ion on TOP TIER Deter
gent Gasoline, please go to the official website (www .toptiergas .com) .
Check ing and Filling
After an extended period of using inadeq uate
fuels, carbon deposit bui ld-ups can rob your en
gine of peak performance.
(D Note
Damage or ma lf u nction due to poor fuel qual
ity is not covered by the A udi New Vehicle
Limited Warranty .
Diesel fuel
Applies to: vehicles with diesel engine
Always use ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) No. 2 .
The ULSD No . 2 meets the ASTM 0975.
Diesel fuel w it h concentrations of b iod iesel h igh
er than 5 % such as Bl 1, B20 or BlOO are strict ly
prohibited .
Se rvice station fuel p umps are labe led with the
correct f uel info rmation for e asy recog nition by
the user.
If the d iesel fue l pump is not labeled
ask the station operator what fuel is being dis
pensed before fil ling up your vehicle .
UL SD No . 2 m ay not be available ou tside the USA
and Canada . Be sure to check befo re t raveling to
other countries .
UL SD No . 2 can become thic ke r i n ve ry cold tem
peratures, and th is can imp air the engine's s tart
ing and running. Depend ing on the sea son, gas
stations provide ULSD No . 2 that flows better in
cold temperatures so that you can continue oper
at ing your vehicle as usual.
@ Note
- Your vehicle's diese l engine was designed
soley for use with ULSD No . 2 . Therefore,
neve r use gasoline, heating oil, other fuels
or flow improvers. These contain substances
that will severely damage the fuel system
and the engine . Such damage will not be
cove red by your New Vehicle Limited War
r a nty.
- If you put a ny amo unt of incorrect fuel in
the fuel tank, do not sta rt the eng ine under
any circumstances. Imme diately contact the
nea res t a uthor ized Audi dealer or author
ized Aud i Serv ice Facility fo r ass istance .
