check if you can release the
parking brake . If you cannot re lease the park­
i ng brake, see yo ur authorized Aud i dea ler or
authori zed Aud i Serv ice Facility . If you can re­
lease the park ing brake and the message still
appears , see an authorized Audi dealer or au ­
thorized Aud i Serv ice Facility immediately to
have the malfunction corrected .
-If the indicator light and message appear w hile
driving ,
the hill start assist or emergency brak ­
ing function may be malfunctioning .
It may not
be possib le to set the pa rking brake or release
it once it has been set. Do not pa rk your veh icle

There is a malfunction in the brake booster . The
brake booster is available, but its effectiveness is
reduced . Braking behav ior may be diffe rent from

- If the brake system indicator light does no t
turn off o r it turns on while driving, the
brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low,
and this increases the risk of an accident.

- If the brake system indicator light turns on
together w ith the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regu lating function may
be malfunct ion ing. Functions that stabilize

could cause the vehicle to swerve, which in­
creases the risk that the vehicle will slide. Do not co ntin ue d rivi ng. See an autho rized

set .

dicator light blinks, the braking force is not build­
i ng up enough or not building up at a ll. Se lect the
P selector lever posit ion to help secure the vehi­
cle. Make sure the indicator light is off before you
start driving .

The coolant level is too low.
Do not continue driving and switch the engine
off. Check the coolant level ¢
page 310.
-If the coolant leve l is too low, add coolant
~ page 310. Only continue driv ing once the in­
dicator light turns off.
• Coolant temperature : to o high . Let engine
run with vehicle s tati onar y
Let the eng ine run at idle for a few minutes to
cool off, until the ind icator light tu rns off.
- If the indicator light does not turn off, do not continue driving the vehicle. See an author ized
Audi dealer or author ized A udi Se rvice Facility
for assistance.
_& WARNING
- Never open the hood if you ca n see or hear
steam o r coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. This increases the risk of
burns . Wait until you no longer see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing .
- The engine compartment in any veh icle can
be a dangerous area. Stop the engine and
allow it to cool before working in the engine
compartment. A lways follow the informa­
t io n found in
¢ page 304, Working in the
engine compartment.

Disconnecting the vehicle battery from the elec­
trical system prevents it from d ischarging. Drive
to an authori zed Aud i dealer or authori zed Aud i
Service Facility immed iately .
Do not stop the engine, or you w ill not be able to
start it again. If you can no longer start the en­ gine, see an authori zed Audi dealer or autho riz ed
Audi Service Facility for assistance .

Drive to an authori zed A udi dealer or authorized
A udi Service Facility immediate ly. Because the ve­
hicle battery is discharging, turn off a ll unneces­
sary electrical equipment such as the rad io. See

Driving
Engine automatically r esta rt s
The standard Start/Stop mode will be canceled
during a stop phase in the follow ing situations.
The engine restarts without any action by the driver .
- The vehicle rolls, for examp le while on a slope.
- The inter io r temperatu re differs from the tem-
perature se lected in the A/C system.
- The w indshield is being defrosted.
- The brake pedal is pressed several t imes in a
row .
- The battery charge level becomes too low .
- Power consumption is high .
The engine can turn off again when the condi­
tions for Start/Stop mode are met .
Ignition is swit ched off aut omaticall y
To prevent the battery from dra ining, the ignition
will sw itch off
aut omati cally under the following
conditions:
- T he Sta rt/Stop system has stopped the engine.
- The vehicle must be stationary .
- You left the veh icle and the engine was not re-
started within approximately 30 seconds.
If this happens, you will see the message
I gni ­
tion turn s off automatically in the instrument
cluster and the activated low beams are replaced
by the parking light. The parking lights will
sw itch off after approximately 30 minutes or
when you lock the vehicle .
The ignition also switches off when you lock the
veh icle from the outs ide dur ing a stop phase.
If the Start/Stop system has not turned off the
engine or if you have sw itched the Start/Stop sys­
tem off manually, the ignition will not be auto­
mat ically switched off and the engine w ill cont in­
ue to run~& .

To red uce the risk of poisoning, neve r allow
t he engine to r un in confined spaces.

@ Tips
-If you leave the ve hicle with the D/S or R se­
lector lever position engaged, the parking
brake is automatically set.
- If you select the D or N selector lever posi­
tion after shifting into reverse, the vehicle must be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h)
in order for the engine to switch off again.

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operating
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

"'To release the parking brake, press the brake or
accelerator pedal while the ignition is switched
on and press the button at the same time(®).
The LED in the button and the indicator light in
the display turn off.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechani­
cal parking brake . The parking brake is designed
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentional­
l y and replaces the hand brake .
In addition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical parking brake provides various convenience and safety
functions .
Emerg enc y braking function

vehicle can be slowed down even if the

-
- Do not press the acce lerator pedal inadver-
tently when the vehicle is stationary, the en­
gine is running and a gear is selected. Oth­
erwise, the vehicle will start to move imme­
diate ly and this could result in an accident .
- If the power supply fails, you cannot set the
parking brake if it is released . In this case,
park the veh icle on leve l ground and secure
it by p lac ing the selector leve r in the P posi­
tion. See an authorized A udi dealer or au ­
thorized A udi Se rvice Fa cil ity for assis tance.
(D Tips
- Occasional noises when the parking brake is
set and released are normal and are not a
cause fo r concern.
- The pa rking brake goes through a self-test
cy cle at regu lar inte rvals when the vehicle is
stopped . Any no ises asso ciated wi th th is are
normal.
- If there is a powe r failure, the parki ng brake
canno t be set if it is rele ased, and i t will not
re lease if it is set ~& . See an a uthorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­
cility for assistance.
- If the parking brake is malfunctioning, the
LED in the
C® button blinks . It may not be
possible to set the parking brake . If the
park ing brake is set, use the hill start assist
to release it
