Press this switch to flash the headlight.
TIP
When the dimmer switch is set to “ ”,
the passing switch has no effect.
EAU12401Dimmer switch “ / ”
Set this switch to “ ” for the high
beam and to “ ” for the low beam.
EAU12461Turn signal switch “ / ”
To signal a right-hand turn, push this
switch to “ ”. To signal a left-hand
turn, push this switch to “ ”. When re-
leased, the switch returns to the center
position. To cancel the turn signal
lights, push the switch in after it has re-
turned to the center position.
EAU12501Horn switch “ ”
Press this switch to sound the horn.
EAU12661Engine stop switch “ / ”
Set this switch to “ ” before starting
the engine. Set this switch to “ ” to
stop the engine in case of an emergen-
cy, such as when the vehicle overturns
or when the throttle cable is stuck.
EAU12735Hazard switch “ ”
With the key in the “ON” or “ ” posi-
tion, use this switch to turn on the haz-
ard lights (simultaneous flashing of all
turn signal lights).
The hazard lights are used in case of
an emergency or to warn other drivers
when your vehicle is stopped where it
might be a traffic hazard.

Do not use the hazard lights for an
extended length of time with the en-
gine not running, otherwise the bat-
tery may discharge.

With the engine turned off:
1. Move the sidestand down.
2.
Make sure that the engine stop switch
is set to “ ”.
3. Turn the key on.
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the kick starter lever down.
Does the engine start?
With the engine still running:
6. Move the sidestand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the sidestand down.
Does the engine stall?
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the sidestand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the kick starter lever down.
Does the engine start?
The system is OK. The motorcycle can
be ridden.
The neutral switch may not be working
correctly.
The motorcycle should not be ridden
until checked by a Yamaha dealer.
The sidestand switch may not be
working correctly.
The motorcycle should not be ridden
until checked by a Yamaha dealer.
The clutch switch may not be working
correctly.
The motorcycle should not be ridden
until checked by a Yamaha dealer.
WARNING
The vehicle must be placed on the centerstand during this inspection.
If a malfunction is noted, have a Yamaha dealer check the system
before riding.

This model is equipped with:
a lean angle sensor to stop the en-
gine in case of a turnover. In this
case, turn the key to “OFF” and
then to “ON”. Failing to do so will
prevent the engine from starting
even though the engine will crank
when pushing the kick starter lever
down.

idling for 20 minutes. If the engine
stops, simply push the kick starter
lever down to restart the engine.

Starting the engine
In order for the ignition circuit cut-off
system (page 3-15) to enable starting,
one of the following conditions must be
met:
The transmission is in the neutral
position.
The transmission is in gear with
the clutch lever pulled and the sid-
estand up.
1. Turn the fuel cock lever to “ON”.
2. Turn the key to “ON” and set the engine stop switch to “ ”.
The engine trouble warning light
and fuel level warning light should
come on for a few seconds, then
go off.

If a warning light does not come on
initially when the key is turned to
“ON”, or if a warning light remains
on, see page 3-2 for the correspond-
ing warning light circuit check.
3. Shift the transmission into the neu- tral position. The neutral indicator
light should come on. If not, ask a
Yamaha dealer to check the elec-
trical circuit.
4. Completely close the throttle and apply the decompression lever.
5. Slowly push the kickstarter lever down until the starting mark shows
on the kick indicator. 6. Release the decompression lever,
release the kickstarter lever, and
then push the kickstarter lever
down forcefully to start the engine.

EAU16682To start out and accelerate 1. Pull the clutch lever to disengage the clutch.
2. Shift the transmission into first gear. The neutral indicator light
should go out.
3. Open the throttle gradually, and at the same time, release the clutch
lever slowly.
4. At the recommended shift points shown in the following table, close
the throttle, and at the same time,
quickly pull the clutch lever in.
5. Shift the transmission into second gear. (Make sure not to shift the
transmission into the neutral posi-
tion.)
6. Open the throttle part way and gradually release the clutch lever.
7. Follow the same procedure when shifting to the next higher gear.
TIP
When shifting gears in normal operat-
ing conditions, use the recommended
shift points.
EAU16701To decelerate1. Apply both the front and the rear brakes to slow the motorcycle.
2. Shift the transmission into first gear when the motorcycle reaches
20 km/h (12 mph). If the engine is
about to stall or runs very roughly,
pull the clutch lever in and use the
brakes to stop the motorcycle.
3. Shift the transmission into the neu- tral position when the motorcycle
is almost completely stopped. The neutral indicator light should come
on.

1st 2nd: 20 km/h (12 mph)
2nd 3rd: 30 km/h (19 mph)

4th 3rd: 25 km/h (16 mph)
