The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
your Scion dealer or commercial towing service before towing.
lThe engine is running but the vehicle does not move.
l The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
If your vehicle needs to be towed
If towing is necessary, we re commend having your vehicle
towed by your Scion dealer or commercial towing service, using
a wheel-lift type truck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all state/
provincial and local laws.

If a warning light turns on or a warning
buzzer sounds
Calmly perform the following actions if any of the warning lights
comes on or flashes. If a light comes on or flashes, but then
goes off, this does not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the
system. However, if this continues to occur, have the vehicle
inspected by your Scion dealer.

Indicates that:
• The brake fluid level is low; or
• The brake system is malfunctioning This light also comes on when the parking brake is not
released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is
fully released the system is operating normally.
Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact your Scion dealer. Continuing to drive the vehicle
may be dangerous.

Malfunction indicator lamp Indicates a malfunction in:
• The electronic engine control system;
• The electronic throttle control system; or
• The electronic continuously variable transmission (if equipped) control system

SRS warning light
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The SRS airbag system;
• The front passenger occupant classification system; or
• The seat belt pretensioner system
Have the vehicle inspected by your Scion dealer
immediately.

lStop the vehicle on a hard, flat surface.
l Set the parking brake.
l Shift the shift lever to P (continuously variable transmission) or R
(manual transmission).
l Stop the engine.
l Turn on the emergency flashers. ( P. 252)
If you have a flat tire
Your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. The flat tire can be
replaced with the spare tire.

WARNING
nIf you have a flat tire
Do not continue driving with a flat tire.
Driving even a short distance with a fl at tire can damage the tire and the
wheel beyond repair, which could result in an accident.

Set the parking brake.
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” position.
Depress the brake pedal.
Pry the cover up with a flathead
screwdriver or equivalent tool.
To prevent damage to the cover,
cover the tip of the screwdriver with
a rag.
Press the shift lock override
button.
The shift lever can be shifted while
the button is pressed.
If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P (vehi-
cles with a continuously variable transmission)
If the shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake
pedal, there may be a problem with the shift lock system (a sys-
tem to prevent accidental operation of the shift lever). Have the
vehicle inspected by your Scion dealer immediately.
The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to
ensure that the shift lever can be shifted:

When trouble arises

Stop the engine. Shift the shift lever to P (continuously variable
transmission) or N (manual transmission), and set the parking
brake.
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the front wheels.
Place wood, stones or some other material under the front wheels
to help provide traction.
Restart the engine.
Shift the shift lever to D or R (continuously variable transmission) or
1 or R (manual transmission) and re lease the parking brake. Then,
while exercising caution, depress the accelerator pedal.
n When it is difficult to free the vehicle
If the vehicle becomes stuck
Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:
