Brightness of the meters (day mode and night mode)
lThe brightness of the meters are changed between day mode and night
mode.
• Day mode: When the tail lights are off or when the tail lights are on but
the surrounding area is bright
• Night mode: When the tail lights are on and the surrounding area is dark
l When in night mode, the brightness will be reduced slightly unless the
meters are set to the maximum brightness level.
n Suspension of the settings display
lWhile driving, the multi-information display cannot be changed to setting
mode. Before changing the settings, stop the vehicle in a safe place.
l In the following situations, operation of some of the settings display may be
temporarily suspended.
• When a warning message appears on the multi-information display
• When the vehicle begins to move
n When disconnecting and reco nnecting battery terminals
The drive information data will be reset.
n Liquid crystal display
Small spots or light spots may appear on the display. This phenomenon is
characteristic of liquid crystal displays, and there is no problem continuing to
use the display.
WARNING
nCaution for use while driving
lWhen operating the multi-information display while driving, pay extra
attention to the safety of the area around the vehicle.
l Do not look continuously at the multi-information display while driving as
you may fail to see pedestrians, objects on the road, etc. ahead of the
vehicle.
n The information display at low temperatures
Allow the interior of the vehicle to warm up before using the liquid crystal
information display. At extremely low temperatures, the information display
monitor may respond slowly, and display changes may be delayed.
For example, there is a lag between the driver’s shifting and the new gear
number appearing on the display. This lag could cause the driver to down-
shift again, causing rapid and excessive engine braking and possibly an
accident resulting in death or injury.
n Cautions during setting up the display
As the engine needs to be running during setting up the display, ensure that
the vehicle is parked in a place with adequate ventilation. In a closed area
such as a garage, exhaust gases including harmful carbon monoxide (CO)
may collect and enter the vehicle. This may lead to death or a serious
health hazard.

WARNING
nTo prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.
Failure to do so may result in a door opening and an occupant falling out,
resulting in death or serious injury.
lEnsure that all doors are properly closed and locked.
l Do not pull the inside handle of the doors while driving.
Be especially careful for the front doors, as the doors may be opened
even if the inside lock buttons are in locked position.
l Set the rear door child-protector locks when children are seated in the rear
seats.
1003-3. Adjusting the seats
Scion iM_U (12J49U)
Rear outside seats
n Adjusting the height of the head restraints
n Adjusting the rear center seat head restraint
Always raise the head restraint one level from the stowed position when
using. Align the head restraint with the installa-
tion holes and push it down to the lock
position.
Make sure that the head restraints are
adjusted so that the center of the head
restraint is closest to the top of your ears.
WARNING
nHead restraint precautions
Observe the following precautions regarding the head restraints. Failure to
do so may result in death or serious injury.
lUse the head restraints designed for each respective seat.
l Adjust the head restraints to the correct position at all times.
l After adjusting the head restraints, push down on them and make sure
they are locked in position.
l Do not drive with the head restraints removed.
1083-5. Opening and closing the windows
Scion iM_U (12J49U)
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
nClosing the windows
lThe driver is responsible for all the power window operations, including the
operation for the passengers. In order to prevent accidental operation,
especially by a child, do not let a child operate the power windows. It is
possible for children and other passengers to have body parts caught in
the power window. Also, when riding with a child, it is recommended to use
the window lock switch.( P. 106)
l Check to make sure that all passengers do not have any part of their body
in a position where it could be caught when a window is being operated.
l When exiting the vehicle, turn the engine switch off, carry the key and exit
the vehicle along with the child. There may be accidental operation, due to
mischief, etc., that may possibly lead to an accident.
n Jam protection function (driver’s window only)
lNever use any part of your body to intentionally activate the jam protection
function.
l The jam protection function may not work if something gets caught just
before the window fully closes.
n Pinch protection function (driver’s window only)
lDo not use a hand, arm, or clothing to intentionally activate the pinch pro-
tection function.
l The pinch protection function may not operate if something gets caught
just before the window is fully opened. Take care so that your hands, arms,
or clothing do not get caught.
1124-1. Before driving
Scion iM_U (12J49U)
nWhen starting off on an uphill
The hill-start assist control will activate. ( P. 156)
n Driving in the rain
lDrive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
l Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
l Refrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the rain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road sur-
face, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properly.
n Engine speed while driving (vehicl es with a continuously variable trans-
mission)
In the following conditions, the engine speed may become high while driving.
This is due to automatic up-shifting control or down-shifting implementation to
meet driving conditions. It does not indicate sudden acceleration.
l The vehicle is judged to be driving uphill or downhill
l When the accelerator pedal is released
l When the brake pedal is depressed while sport mode is selected
l When the brake pedal is depressed suddenly and vehicle speed is reduced
sharply
n Breaking in your new Scion
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recom-
mended:
lFor the first 186 miles (300 km):
Avoid sudden stops.
l For the first 621 miles (1000 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
n Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. ( P. 296)
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
nWhen starting the vehicle (vehicles with a continuously variable trans-
mission)
Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped with the engine
running. This prevents the vehicle from creeping.
