1. Park the vehicle in the shade whenever possible. Parking in the hot sun makes the vehicle interior extremely hot which then requires more time to cool. If it is neces-sary to park in the sun, open the windows for the first few minutes of air condition- ing to expel the hot air.2. Afterwards, keep the windows closed when the air conditioning is in use. The entry of outside air through open windowswill reduce cooling efficiency. 3. When running the air conditioning, make sure the air intake, which is located infront of the windshield, is free of obstruc- tions such as leaves. Leaves collected in the air-intake chamber may reduce airflow and plug the water drains.
If the air conditioning seems less effective than usual, the cause might be a refrigerant leak.Have the system inspected by your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
The air conditioning should be operated for at least five minutes each week, even in coldweather. This includes the quick defrosting mode. Operating the air condition system weekly maintains lubrication of the compres-sor internal parts to keep the air conditioning in the best operating condition.
N00733800151
The air conditioning system is equipped with an air filter to remove pollen and dust. The air filter’s ability to collect pollen and dirt is reduced as it becomes dirty, so replaceit periodically. For the maintenance interval, refer to the “WARRANTY AND MAINTE- NANCE MANUAL”.
When defrosting, do not set the temperature control dial to the maximum cool position. This will blow cool air on the window glass and fog it up.
Important air conditioning operating tips
NOTE
Air conditioning system refrig- erant and lubricant recommen- dations
CAUTION The air conditioning system in your vehicle must be charged with the refrigerant HFC-134a and the lubricant SUN-PAG56. Use of any other refrigerant or lubricant will cause severe damage and may require replac-ing your vehicle’s entire air conditioning system. The release of refrigerant into the atmo-sphere is not recommended. The new refrigerant HFC-134a in your vehi- cle is designed not to harm the earth’s ozonelayer. However, it may contribute slightly to global warming. It is recommended that the old refrigerant be saved and recycled for future use.
During a long period of disuse Air purifier
NOTE
Operation in certain conditions such as driv- ing on a dusty road and
frequent use of the
air conditioning can lead to reduction of ser- vice life of the filter.
When you feel that the
air flow is lower than normal or when thewindshield or windows start to fog up easily, replace the air filter. Contact your Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice for assistance.

5. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery (A), and the other end to the posi- tive (+) terminal of the booster battery(B).
6. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery (B), and the other end to theengine block of the vehicle with the low battery (A) at the point farthest from the battery.
7. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min-utes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the low battery. 8. After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in the reverse order from the way you connected them.
WA R N I N G If the electrolyte fluid is not visible, or looks frozen, DO NOT ATTEMPT JUMP STARTING!! The battery might split open or explode if the temperature is below the freezingpoint or if it is not filled to the proper level. NOTE
Open the terminal cover before connecting the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery. (Refer to “Disconnection and connection” onpage 9-13.)
Use the proper cables suitable for the battery size. Otherwise heat damage to the cables could result. Check the jumper cables for damage and cor- rosion before use.WA R N I N G Be sure to follow the proper order when connecting the batteries, of:
.
Make sure that the connection is made to the engine properly. If the connection is directly made to the negative side of the battery, the flammable gases from insidethe battery might catch fire and explode, causing personal injury. When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect the positive (+) cable to the nega- tive (-) terminal. Otherwise sparks canmake the battery explode.NOTE
CAUTION Make sure that the jumper cable will not be caught in the cooling fan or other moving parts in the engine compartment.NOTE
If the engine is started with the air duct removed, the noise produced as air is drawn into the engine will be greater than when theduct is installed.WA R N I N G Charging your battery while it is still in your vehicle might cause the battery to catch fire and explode. If you have to charge it while in the vehicle, disconnectthe negative terminal. Keep sparks, cigarettes and flames away from the battery because the battery may explode. Keep your work area well vented when charging or using the battery in an enclosed space.

Engine overheating 8-4 For emergencies
8
If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the engine has been started by using jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking systemwarning light to blink on and off. This is only due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap-pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.
N00836500323
When the engine has overheated, the infor- mation screen in the multi-information dis-play will be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. The screen will then change to theengine coolant temperature display screen and “ ” will flash. If this happens: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine still running, carefullyraise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment. 3. Check that the cooling fan is running. Ifthe fan is not turning, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.
5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolant temperature warning display on the multi-information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, you can start driving again. If the bar graphstays in the red zone, turn off the engine. 6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the reserve tank. Ifthere is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant. 8. If the reserve tank needs coolant, you willprobably also need to add coolant to the radiator. Do not loosen or remove the radiator cap until the engine has cooleddown.
Remove all the caps before charging the battery. Electrolyte (battery acid) is corrosive diluted sulphuric acid. If electrolyte comesin contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. If electrolytegets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

The coolant reserve tank (A) lets you quickly see when you need to add coolant. When the engine is cold, the level in the reserve tankshould be between the “FULL” and “LOW” marks. The radiator usually stays full so there is no reason to remove
the radiator cap (B)
except when you check the coolant freeze point or replace the antifreeze coolant.
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Coolant provides excellent protection against corrosion andrust formation on all metals, including alumi- num, and prevents blockages in some parts of engine. If you need to add co
olant often, or if the
level in the reserve tank does not drop when the engine cools, the cooling system shouldbe pressure-tested for leaks. Take your vehi- cle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for testing.
