The alarm will be activated if any of the fol-lowing occur while the vehicle is parked andthe system is armed.
One of the doors is opened without using the remote control transmitter or the F. A . S . T. - k e y. The engine hood or the trunk lid is opened.
When the alarm is activated: 1. The headlights blink on and off for 3 min- utes. After 3 minutes the headlights automati- cally shut off. 2. The horn will sound intermittently for 3minutes.
Ty p e 1 Ty p e 2 The alarm can be deactivated in the following ways.
NOTE
If the engine hood or the trunk lid is open, the theft-alarm indicator (A) illuminates and the system cannot enter the armed stage. The system enters the armed stage about 20 sec-onds after the engine hood or the trunk lid is closed. The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator (A) is illuminated, all doors are unlocked by remote control trans-mitter or the F.A.S.T.-key. The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator is illuminated, the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position. The system will not be
armed if a door or the
trunk lid or the engine hood is not com- pletely closed. If this happens, rearm the sys-tem as described above.

Starting and stopping the engine Features and controls 5-55

N00542101096
Do not operate the starter motor continu- ously for longer than
15 seconds as this
could run the battery down or damage thestarter motor. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition switch back to the “LOCK” position, wait a few seconds, and then try again. Trying repeatedly withthe engine or starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” (on page 8-2) for instructions. The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move. A lon-ger warm up period will only consume extra fuel.

[For vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.- key.]For information on operation for vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key, refer to “F.A.S.T.-key: Starting the engine” on page5-20. [Except for vehicles equipped with the F. A . S . T. - k e y. ]Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system, which automatically controls the release of fuel.
There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. The starter should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time.To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened 2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Make sure the parking brake is applied.4. Press and hold the brake pedal downfirmly with your right foot. 5. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 6. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles with continuously variable transmission (CVT), make sure the selec- tor lever is in the “P” (PARK) position.
Starting and stopping the engine Tips for starting
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine
at high rpms or drive
at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up. Release the ignition switch as soon as the engine starts. Otherwise, the starter motorwill be damaged.
Starting the engine
NOTE
For models equipped with a manual trans- axle, the starter will not operate unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed (Clutch inter-lock). This is a safety feature.

The CVT has 2 forward selector positions and 1 reverse selector position. The CVT selects an optimum ratio automati-cally when the selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) position, depending on the speed of the vehicle and the position of the acceleratorpedal. The selector lever (A) has 2 gates; the main gate (B) and the manual gate (C).
With the brake pedal depressed, set the selector lever in the gate to operate. Set the selector lever in the gate to operate.
WA R N I N G Always depress the brake pedal when shifting the selector lever into a selector position from the “P” (PARK) or “N”(NEUTRAL) position. When beginning to driv
e, do not shift the
selector lever from the “P” (PARK) or“N” (NEUTRAL) position while depress- ing the accelerator pedal. Doing so is dan- gerous because the vehicle will “jump”forward or backward.
NOTE
To ensure proper transmission operation, stop at each detent position when shifting. After shifting, check the position in the multi-information display. If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the“P” (PARK) position. For a shift indicated by in the illustration, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If you attempt to move theselector lever before depressing the brake pedal, the selector lever will be immovable.
Vehicles with manual gate
NOTE
In the main gate, the selector lever has 4 positions. For information on manual gate operation, please refer to “Sports mode” on page 5-64.
With the brake pedal depressed, set the selector lever in the gate to operate.

When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to another position while the brake pedal is pressed and held down with the ignition switch at the“ON” position, the battery may be flat or the shift-lock mechanism may be malfunction- ing.Immediately have your vehicle checked by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. If you need to move the vehicle, shift theselector lever as follows. 1. Make sure the parking brake is fully applied. 2. Stop the engine if it is running.3. Insert a screwdriver with a cloth over its tip into the notch (A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to remove the cover.
4. Depress the brake pedal with the right foot. 5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC”position. 6. Insert a screwdriver in the shift-lock release hole (B). Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position whilepressing the screwdriver down.

If the ambient temperature is low, the selector lever position display on the multi-informa- tion display may blink when the selector lever is placed in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R”(REVERSE) position immediately after the engine has been started. This indicates that the transmission requires warming up. Whilethe display is blinking, the vehicle will not move, because the transmission keeps disen- gaging until the warm up is completed even ifthe selector lever is placed in the “D” or “R” position. When the selector lever position display is blinking, perform the following procedure: 1. Depress the brake pedal with your right foot and place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position for several seconds.
2. Keep depressing the brake pedal and then place the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position. If the selector lever position display stopsblinking, the warm up is completed and the transmission will function normally. 3. If the display is still blinking, repeat steps1 and 2 above.

This position locks the transmission to pre- vent the vehicle from moving. The engine canbe started from the “PARK” position. Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
At this position, the transmission is disen- gaged. It is the same as the neutral position ona manual transaxle and should be used when the vehicle is not moving for an extended length of time during driving, such as in atraffic jam. This position is used for most city and high- way driving. The transmission will automati-cally and continuously change its gear ratio depending on road and driving conditions.
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, immediately park your vehicle in a safe place and follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid is overheating. The engine con- trol may activate to lower the CVT fluid tem-perature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease. In this case, take one of the following procedures:• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down. After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains or flashes frequently, have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
[When warning display is showing] It may be that there is something unusual happening in the CVT, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

“R” REVERSE
CAUTION Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion. If the lever is shifted into the “P”(PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion, the transmission may be damaged. CAUTION
“N” NEUTRAL
WA R N I N G Never move the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving since you could accidentally slip it into the “P”(PARK) or “R”(REVERSE) position, damaging the transmission. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope, the engine should be started in the “P” (PARK) position, not in“N” (NEUTRAL) position. To prevent rolling, always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) position, or when shift- ing into or out of “N” (NEUTRAL) posi-tion.
