Driving Tips
Winter Driving
Carry emergency gear, including tire
chains, window scraper, À ares, a small
shovel, jumper cables, and a small bag of
sand or salt.
Ask an Authorized Mazda Dealer to check
the following:
y Have the proper ratio of antifreeze in the
radiator.
Refer to Engine Coolant on page
6-29 .
y Inspect the battery and its cables. Cold
reduces battery capacity.
y Use an engine oil appropriate for the
lowest ambient temperatures that the
vehicle will be driven in (page 6-26 ).
y Inspect the ignition system for damage
and loose connections.
y Use washer À uid made with antifreeze—
but do not use engine coolant antifreeze
for washer À uid (page 6-31 ).
N O T E
y Remove snow before driving. Snow left
on the windshield is dangerous as it
could obstruct vision.
y Do not apply excessive force to a
window scraper when removing ice or
frozen snow on the mirror glass and
windshield.
y Never use warm or hot water for
removing snow or ice from windows and
mirrors as it could result in the glass
cracking.
y Drive slowly. Braking performance
can be adversely affected if snow or
ice adheres to the brake components. If
this situation occurs, drive the vehicle
slowly, releasing the accelerator pedal
and lightly applying the brakes several
times until the brake performance
returns to normal.
Snow Tires
Use snow tires on all four wheels
Do not go faster than 120 km/h (75 mph)
while driving with snow tires. In À ate snow
tires 30 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm
2 , 4.3 psi) more
than recommended on the tire pressure
label (driver's door frame), but never
more than the maximum cold-tire pressure
shown on the tires.
The vehicle is originally equipped with
all season radials designed to be used all
year around. In some extreme climates you
may ¿ nd it necessary to replace them with
snow tires during the winter months to
further improve traction on snow and ice
covered roads.
WARNING
Use only the same size and type tires
(snow, radial, or non-radial) on all four
wheels:
Using tires diff erent in size or type is
dangerous. Your vehicle's handling
could be greatly aff ected and result in
an accident.
CAUTION
Check local regulations before using
studded tires.

Turbocharger Information
CAUTION
¾ After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine at least 30 seconds before
stopping it. Otherwise, the turbocharger could be damaged.
¾ Racing or over-revving the engine, particularly after it's just been started, can damage the
turbocharger.
¾ To protect the engine from damage, the engine is designed so that it cannot be raced just
after starting it in extremely cold weather.
The turbocharger greatly enhances engine power. Its advanced design provides improved
operation and requires minimum maintenance.
To get the most from it, observe the following.
1. Change engine oil and ¿ lter according to Scheduled Maintenance (page 6-4 ).
2. Use only recommended engine oil (page 6-26 ). Extra additives are NOT
recommended.

Wrench Indicator Light *
When the ignition is switched ON, the
wrench indicator light is illuminated and
then turns off after a few seconds.
The wrench indicator light turns on under
the following conditions:
y When the preset maintenance period has
arrived.
y When its time to replace the engine oil.

6-19 .
Low Engine Coolant Temperature
Indicator Light (Blue) *
The light illuminates continuously when
the engine coolant temperature is low and
turns off after the engine is warm.

CAUTION
¾ When driving off -road in areas where there is grass or foliage, it is recommended that the
Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system be turned off .
¾ Always use tires for all wheels that are of the specifi ed size, and the same manufacturer,
brand, and tread pattern. In addition, do not use tires with signifi cantly diff erent wear
patterns on the same vehicle as the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may not
operate normally.
¾ The laser sensor (front) includes a function for detecting a soiled windshield and informing
the driver, however, depending on the conditions, it may not detect plastic shopping bags,
ice or snow on the windshield. In such cases, the system cannot accurately determine a
vehicle ahead and may not be able to operate normally. Always drive carefully and pay
attention to the road ahead.
N O T E
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will not operate if the driver is deliberately
performing driving operations (accelerator pedal and steering wheel).
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will operate under the following conditions.
y The engine is running.
y “Forward Smart City Brake Support Malfunction” is not displayed in the multi-
information display.
y The vehicle speed is between about 4 to 30 km/h (2 to 18 mph).
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system is not turned off.
y The DSC is not malfunctioning.
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) detects a vehicle ahead by emitting a near-infrared
laser beam and receiving the beam re À ected off the re À ector of the vehicle ahead, and
then using it for the measurement. Consequently, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
may not operate under the following conditions:
y Re À ection of the laser is poor due to the shape of the vehicle ahead.
y The vehicle ahead is signi ¿ cantly dirty.
y Under bad weather condition, such as rain, fog and snow.
y The window washer is being used or the windshield wipers are not used when it's
raining.
y The windshield is dirty.
y The steering wheel is turned completely left or right, or the vehicle is accelerated
rapidly and comes close to the vehicle ahead.
y Trucks with low loading platforms and vehicles with an extremely low or high pro ¿ le.
y Vehicles with certain shapes such as a vehicle carrier.

Scheduled Maintenance
Scheduled Maintenance (U.S.A., Canada, and Puerto
Rico)
Follow Schedule 1 if the vehicle is operated mainly where none of the following conditions
(severe driving conditions)apply.
y Repeated short-distance driving
y Driving in dusty conditions
y Driving with extended use of brakes
y Driving in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are used
y Driving on rough or muddy roads
y Extended periods of idling or low-speed operation
y Driving for long periods in cold temperatures or extremely humid climates
y Driving in extremely hot conditions
y Driving in mountainous conditions continually
If any do apply, follow Schedule 2. (Canada residents follow Schedule 2.)
Vehicles using Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance
Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance is selected by default for U.S.A. and Puerto Rico residents.
If any following conditions do apply, follow Schedule 2 with engine oil ¿ xed maintenance.
y Extended periods of idling or low-speed operation such as police car, taxi or driving
school car
y Driving in dusty conditions
The vehicle calculates the remaining oil life based on engine operating conditions. The
vehicle lets you know when an oil change is due by illuminating the wrench indicator light
in the instrument cluster. Change the oil as soon as possible within the next 1000 km (600
mile) or 15 days. Refer page 6-19 for the details.
N O T E
y Please ensure that the Flexible Oil Maintenance Setting is reset after each Oil and Filter
replacement.
y For maintenance guidelines beyond the miles/months listed, follow the maintenance
intervals provided in the Scheduled Maintenance Tables.
