NOTE
The timing in which the system switches the headlights changes under the following conditions. If the
system does not switch the headlights appropriately, manually switch between high and low beams
according to the visibility as well as road and traffic conditions.
lWhen there are sources of light in the area such as street lamps, illuminated signboards, and
traffic signals.
lWhen there are reflective objects in the surrounding area such as reflective plates and signs.lWhen visibility is reduced under rain, snow and foggy conditions.lWhen driving on roads with sharp curves or hilly terrain.lWhen the headlights/rear lamps of vehicles in front of you or in the opposite lane are dim or not
illuminated.
lWhen there is insufficient darkness such as at dawn or dusk.lWhen the luggage compartment is loaded with heavy objects or the rear passenger seats are
occupied.
lWhen visibility is reduced due to a vehicle in front of you spraying water from its tires onto your
windshield.

qTo Operate the System
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
operates to switch the headlights
automatically between high and low
beams after the ignition is switched ON
and the headlight switch is in the AUTO
and high beam position. At the same time,
the High Beam Control System (HBC)
indicator light (green) in the instrument
cluster illuminates.
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
determines that it is dark based on the
brightness of the surrounding area.
NOTE
lWhen the vehicle speed is 30 km/h (18 mph)
or higher, the headlights automatically
switch to high beams when there are no
vehicles ahead or approaching in the
opposite direction.
When the vehicle speed is less than about
20 km/h (12 mph), the High Beam Control
System (HBC) switches the headlights to
low beams.
lThe low beams may not switch to high
beams when cornering.
lOperation of the High Beam Control
System (HBC) function can be disabled

NOTElThe Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will not operate if the driver is deliberately
performing driving operations (accelerator pedal and steering wheel).
lThe Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will operate under the following conditions.lThe engine is running.l“SCBS Forward malfunction”is not displayed in the multi-information display.lThe vehicle speed is between about 4 to 30 km/h (2 to 18 mph).lThe Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system is not turned off.lThe DSC is not malfunctioning.lThe Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) detects a vehicle ahead by emitting a near-infrared laser
beam and receiving the beam reflected off the reflector of the vehicle ahead, and then using it for
the measurement. Consequently, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) may not operate under the
following conditions:
lReflection of the laser is poor due to the shape of the vehicle ahead.lThe vehicle ahead is significantly dirty.lUnder bad weather condition, such as rain, fog and snow.lThe window washer is being used or the windshield wipers are not used when it's raining.lThe windshield is dirty.lThe steering wheel is turned completely left or right, or the vehicle is accelerated rapidly and
comes close to the vehicle ahead.
lTrucks with low loading platforms and vehicles with an extremely low or high profile.lVehicles with certain shapes such as a vehicle carrier.lUnder the following conditions, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may not operate
normally.
lHeavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat.lIf there is the possibility of partial contact with a vehicle ahead.lWhen driving on continuously curving roads, and entering and exiting exits.lElongated luggage or cargo is loaded onto installed roof rails and covers the laser sensor.lExhaust gas from the vehicle in front, sand, snow, and water vapor rising from manholes and
grating, and water splashed into the air.
lWhen towing a malfunctioning vehicle.lWhen driving with tires having significantly different wear.lIn the following cases, the laser sensor may inadvertently determine that there is a vehicle ahead
and the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may operate.
lObjects on the road at the entrance to a curve.lVehicles passing in the opposite lane while making a curve.lMetal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road.lWhen passing through a toll gate equipped with a bar.lWhen passing under a vinyl curtain or flag.lPlastic objects such as pylons.lTwo-wheeled vehicles, pedestrians, animals or standing trees.lWhen the system operates, the user is notified by the flashing Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
warning indication and the multi-information display.

Your vehicle is equipped with a Forward Sensing Camera (FSC). The Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) is positioned near the rearview mirror and used by the following systems.
lHigh Beam Control System (HBC)lLane Departure Warning System (LDWS)lSmart Brake Support (SBS)
The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) determines the conditions ahead of the vehicle while
traveling at night and detects traffic lanes. The distance in which the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) can detect objects varies depending on the surrounding conditions.

CAUTION
ØDo not apply accessories, stickers or film to the windshield near the Forward
Sensing Camera (FSC).
If the area in front of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens is obstructed, it will
cause the system to not operate correctly. Consequently, each system may not
operate normally which could lead to an unexpected accident.
ØDo not disassemble or modify the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC).
Disassembly or modification of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) will cause a
malfunction or mistaken operation. Consequently, each system may not operate
normally which could lead to an unexpected accident.
ØHeed the following cautions to assure the correct operation of the Forward
Sensing Camera (FSC).
ØThe direction of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) has been finely adjusted,
therefore do not change the installation position or remove the Forward
Sensing Camera (FSC).
ØBe careful not to scratch the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens or allow it to
get dirty.
ØDo not remove the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cover.
ØDo not place objects on the dashboard which reflect light.
ØAlways keep the windshield glass around the camera clean by removing dirt or
fogging. Use the windshield defroster to remove fogging on the windshield.
ØConsult an Authorized Mazda Dealer regarding cleaning the interior side of the
windshield around the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC).
ØConsult an Authorized Mazda Dealer before performing repairs around the
Forward Sensing Camera (FSC).
ØThe Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) is installed to the windshield. Consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer for windshield repair and replacement.
ØWhen performing repairs around the rearview mirror, consult an Authorized
Mazda Dealer.
ØDo not hit or apply strong force to the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) or the
area around it. If strong force is applied, stop using the Lane Departure
Warning System (LDWS), the High Beam Control System (HBC), and Smart
Brake Support (SBS) and consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
ØThe direction in which the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) is pointed has been
finely adjusted. Do not change the installation position of the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) or remove it. Otherwise, it could result in damage or malfunction.

NOTElIn the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cannot detect target objects correctly,
and each system may be unable to operate normally.
lThe height of the vehicle ahead is low.lYou drive your vehicle at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.lHeadlights are not turned on during the night or when going through a tunnel.lIn the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) may not be able to detect target
objects correctly.
lWhen driving next to walls with no patterning (including fences and longitudinally striped
walls).
lThe taillights of the vehicle ahead are turned off.lA vehicle is outside the illumination range of the headlights.lThe vehicle is making a sharp curve, or ascending or descending a steep slope.lEntering or exiting a tunnel.lHeavy luggage is loaded causing the vehicle to tilt.lStrong light is shone at the front of the vehicle (back light or high-beam light from on-coming
vehicles).
lThere are many light emitters on the vehicle ahead.lWhen the vehicle ahead is not equipped with taillights or the taillights are turned off at
nighttime.
