On conventional vehicles, the kinetic energy that is generated when the vehicle is
decelerated by applying the brakes or during engine braking ends up being discarded as
heat. By utilizing this discarded kinetic energy to generate electricity and use it to power the
vehicle's electrical devices and accessories such as the A/C and audio, fuel consumption can
be reduced. Mazda's system for generating electricity from this kinetic energy is called the
Regenerative Braking System (i-ELOOP).

y The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system will not operate under the following
circumstances.
 


y The vehicle speed falls below about 10 km/h (6.3 mph) even though the Blind Spot
Monitoring (BSM) OFF indicator light is turned off.
 


y The shift lever (manual transaxle)/selector lever (automatic transaxle) is shifted to
reverse (R) and the vehicle is reversing.
 


y In the following cases, the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) OFF indicator light À ashes and
operation of the system is stopped. If the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) OFF indicator
light remains À ashing, have the vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon
as possible.
 


y Some problem with the system including the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning
lights is detected.
 


y A large deviation in the installation position of a radar sensor (rear) on the vehicle has
occurred.
 


y There is a large accumulation of snow or ice on the rear bumper near a radar sensor
(rear). Remove any snow, ice or mud on the rear bumper.
 


y Driving on snow-covered roads for long periods.



y The temperature near the radar sensors (rear) becomes extremely hot due to driving
for long periods on slopes during the summer.
 


y The battery voltage has decreased. 



y Under the following conditions, the radar sensors (rear) cannot detect target objects or it
may be dif¿ cult to detect them.




y A vehicle is in the detection area at the rear in an adjacent driving lane but it does not
approach. The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system determines the condition based on
radar detection data.
 


y A vehicle is traveling alongside your vehicle at nearly the same speed for an extended
period of time.
 


y Vehicles approaching in the opposite direction.



y A vehicle in an adjacent driving lane is attempting to pass your vehicle.



y A vehicle is in an adjacent lane on a road with extremely wide driving lanes. The
detection area of the radar sensors (rear) is set at the road width of expressways.
 


y In the following cases, the activation of the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights
and the warning beep may not occur or they may be delayed.
 


y A vehicle makes a lane change from a driving lane two lanes over to an adjacent lane.



y Driving on steep slopes.



y Crossing the summit of a hill or mountain pass.



y The turning radius is small (making a sharp turn, turning at intersections).



y When there is a difference in the height between your driving lane and the adjacent
lane.
 


y Directly after pressing the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) switch and the system
becomes operable.

BSM OFF Indicator Light

This indicator light illuminates for a few
seconds when the ignition is switched ON.

The BSM OFF indicator light illuminates
when the BSM system is turned off by
pressing the BSM OFF switch.
The indicator light À ashes if the BSM
system has a malfunction. Consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.

NOTE
If the vehicle is driven on a road with less
traf¿ c and few vehicles that the radar
sensors can detect, the system may pause
(The BSM OFF indicator light in the
instrument cluster À ashes). However, it
does not indicate a malfunction.

BSM OFF Switch

When the BSM OFF switch is pressed, the
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear
Cross Traf¿ c Alert (RCTA) systems are
turned off and the BSM OFF Indicator
Light in the instrument cluster turns on.
If the switch is pressed again, the Blind
Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross
Traf¿ c Alert (RCTA) systems become
operable and the BSM OFF Indicator
Light turns off.
N O T E
 


y When the ignition is switched off, the
condition before the system was turned
off is maintained. For example, if the
ignition is switched OFF while the
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear
Cross Traf¿ c Alert (RCTA) systems are
operational, the Blind Spot Monitoring
(BSM) and Rear Cross Traf¿ c Alert
(RCTA) systems remain operational the
next time the ignition is switched ON.
 


y The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and
Rear Cross Traf¿ c Alert (RCTA) systems
are turned off when the battery is
disconnected such as when the battery
terminals or fuses have been removed
and re-installed. To turn the Blind Spot
Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross
Tr a f¿ c Alert (RCTA) systems back on,
press the BSM OFF switch.

WARNING
Always check the surrounding area visually before actually putting the vehicle in
reverse:
The system is only designed to assist you in checking for vehicles at the rear when putting
the vehicle in reverse. Due to certain limitations with the operation of this system, the
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning light may not fl ash or it might be delayed even
though a vehicle is behind your vehicle. Always make it your responsibility as a driver to
check the rear.

N O T E
 


y In the following cases, the BSM OFF Indicator Light turns on and operation of the
system is stopped. If the BSM OFF Indicator Light remains illuminated, have the vehicle
inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible.

y In the following cases, the radar sensor (front) may not be able to detect vehicles ahead
or obstructions.
 


y The rear surface of a vehicle ahead does not reÀ ect radio waves effectively, such as
an unloaded trailer or an automobile with a loading platform covered by a soft top,
vehicles with a hard plastic tailgate, and round-shaped vehicles.
 


y Vehicles ahead with low vehicle height and thus less area for reÀ ecting radio waves.



y Visibility is reduced due to a vehicle ahead casting off water, snow, or sand from its
tires and onto your windshield.
 


y The trunk/luggage compartment is loaded with heavy objects or the rear passenger
seats are occupied.
 


y Ice, snow, or soiling is on the front surface of the front emblem.



y During inclement weather such as rain, snow, or sand storms.



y When driving near facilities or objects emitting strong radio waves. 



y In the following cases, the radar sensor (front) may detect vehicles in the opposite lane or
surrounding obstructions, or it may not be able to detect vehicles ahead or obstructions.
 


y The beginning and end of a curve.



y Roads with continuous curves.



y Narrow lane roads due to road construction or lane closures.



y The vehicle ahead enters the radar sensor's blind spot.



y The vehicle ahead is running abnormally due to accident or vehicle damage. 



y Roads with repeated up and down slopes



y Driving on poor roads or unpaved roads.



y The distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead is extremely short.



y A vehicle suddenly comes close such as by cutting into the lane. 



y To prevent incorrect operation of the system, use tires of the same speci¿ ed size,
manufacturer, brand, and tread pattern on all four wheels. In addition, do not use tires
with signi¿ cantly different wear patterns or tire pressures on the same vehicle. (Including
the temporary spare tire)
 


y If the battery power is weak, the system may not operate correctly.



y When driving on roads with little traf¿ c and few vehicles ahead or obstructions for the
radar sensor (front) to detect, Forward Obstruction Warning/Smart City Brake Support
(FOW/SCBS) warning light (amber) temporarily illuminates, however, this does not
indicate a problem.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Initialization
In the following cases, system
initialization must be performed so that the
system operates normally.
 


y A tire pressure is adjusted.



y Tire rotation is performed.



y A tire or wheel is replaced.



y The battery is replaced or completely
drained.
 


y The tire pressure monitoring system
warning light is illuminated.


Initialization method

1. Park the car in a safe place and ¿ rmly
apply the parking brake.
2. Let the tires cool, then adjust the tire
pressure of all four (4) tires to the
speci¿ ed pressure indicated on the tire
pressure label located on the driver's
door frame (door open).
Refer to Tires on page 9-10 .
3. Switch the ignition ON.
4. While the vehicle is parked, press
and hold the tire pressure monitoring
system set switch and verify that
the tire pressure monitoring system
warning light in the instrument cluster
À ashes twice and a beep sound is heard
once.


CAUTION
If the system initialization is performed
without adjusting the tire pressure,
the system cannot detect the normal
tire pressure and it may not illuminate
the tire pressure monitoring system
warning light even if a tire pressure is
low, or it may illuminate the light even
if the pressures are normal.
Adjust the tire pressure on all four
tires and initialize the system when
the warning light is turned on. If the
warning light turns on for a reason
other than a fl at tire, the tire pressure
of all four tires may have decreased
naturally.
The system initialization will not be
performed if the switch is pressed while
the vehicle is being driven.

y Operate the climate control system with
the engine running.
 


y To prevent the battery from being
discharged, do not leave the fan control
dial on for a long period of time with the
ignition switched ON when the engine is
not running.
 


y Clear all obstructions such as leaves,
snow and ice from the hood and the air
inlet in the cowl grille to improve the
system ef¿ ciency.




y Use the climate control system to defog
the windows and dehumidify the air.
 


y The recirculate mode should be used
when driving through tunnels or while in
a traf¿ c jam, or when you would like to
shut off outside air for quick cooling of
the interior.
 


y Use the outside air position for
ventilation or windshield defrosting.
 


y If the vehicle has been parked in direct
sunlight during hot weather, open the
windows to let warm air escape, then
run the climate control system.

(With A/C switch)
 




y Run the air conditioner about 10 minutes
at least once a month to keep internal
parts lubricated.
 


y Have the air conditioner checked before
the weather gets hot. Lack of refrigerant
may make the air conditioner less
ef¿ cient.

 The refrigerant speci¿ cations are
indicated on a label attached to the
inside of the engine compartment. Check
the label before re¿ lling the refrigerant.
If the wrong type of refrigerant is used,
it could result in a serious malfunction
of the air conditioner.

WARNING
Always adjust the audio while the
vehicle is stopped:
Do not adjust the audio control
switches while driving the vehicle.
Adjusting the audio while driving
the vehicle is dangerous as it could
distract your attention from the vehicle
operation which could lead to a
serious accident.
Even if the audio control switches are
equipped on the steering wheel, learn
to use the switches without looking
down at them so that you can keep
your maximum attention on the road
while driving the vehicle.

CAUTION
For the purposes of safe driving,
adjust the audio volume to a level that
allows you to hear sounds outside of
the vehicle including car horns and
particularly emergency vehicle sirens.

y To prevent the battery from being
discharged, do not leave the audio

when the engine is not running.
 


y If a cellular phone or CB radio is used
in or near the vehicle, it could cause
noise to occur from the audio system,
