y Under the following conditions, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may not
operate normally.
 


y Heavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat.



y If there is the possibility of partial contact with a vehicle ahead.



y When driving on continuously curving roads, and entering and exiting exits.



y Elongated luggage or cargo is loaded onto installed roof rails and covers the laser
sensor (front).
 


y Exhaust gas from the vehicle in front, sand, snow, and water vapor rising from
manholes and grating, and water splashed into the air.
 


y When towing a malfunctioning vehicle. 



y In the following cases, the laser sensor (front) may inadvertently determine that there is a
vehicle ahead and the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may operate.
 


y Objects on the road at the entrance to a curve.



y Vehicles passing in the opposite lane while making a curve.



y Metal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road.



y When passing through a toll gate.



y When passing under a vinyl curtain or À ag.



y Plastic objects such as pylons.



y Two-wheeled vehicles, pedestrians, animals or standing trees.



y Vehicle is driven with some of the tires having signi¿ cant wear. 



y When the system operates, the user is noti¿ ed by the À ashing Smart City Brake Support
(SCBS) indicator light (red) and the active driving display * . 


y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) warning light (amber) turns on when the system
has a malfunction.

y In the following cases, the radar sensor (front) may not be able to detect vehicles ahead
or obstructions.
 


y The rear surface of a vehicle ahead does not reÀ ect radio waves effectively, such as
an unloaded trailer or an automobile with a loading platform covered by a soft top,
vehicles with a hard plastic tailgate, and round-shaped vehicles.
 


y Vehicles ahead with low vehicle height and thus less area for reÀ ecting radio waves.



y Visibility is reduced due to a vehicle ahead casting off water, snow, or sand from its
tires and onto your windshield.
 


y The trunk/luggage compartment is loaded with heavy objects or the rear passenger
seats are occupied.
 


y Ice, snow, or soiling is on the front surface of the front emblem.



y During inclement weather such as rain, snow, or sand storms.



y When driving near facilities or objects emitting strong radio waves. 



y In the following cases, the radar sensor (front) may detect vehicles in the opposite lane or
surrounding obstructions, or it may not be able to detect vehicles ahead or obstructions.
 


y The beginning and end of a curve.



y Roads with continuous curves.



y Narrow lane roads due to road construction or lane closures.



y The vehicle ahead enters the radar sensor's blind spot.



y The vehicle ahead is running abnormally due to accident or vehicle damage. 



y Roads with repeated up and down slopes



y Driving on poor roads or unpaved roads.



y The distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead is extremely short.



y A vehicle suddenly comes close such as by cutting into the lane. 



y To prevent incorrect operation of the system, use tires of the same speci¿ ed size,
manufacturer, brand, and tread pattern on all four wheels. In addition, do not use tires
with signi¿ cantly different wear patterns or tire pressures on the same vehicle. (Including
the temporary spare tire)
 


y If the battery power is weak, the system may not operate correctly.



y When driving on roads with little traf¿ c and few vehicles ahead or obstructions for the
radar sensor (front) to detect, Forward Obstruction Warning/Smart City Brake Support
(FOW/SCBS) warning light (amber) temporarily illuminates, however, this does not
indicate a problem.

Laser Sensor (Front)
The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) laser sensor is installed at the top of the windshield
near the rearview mirror.


Laser sensor (front)

Always keep the surface of the windshield around the laser sensor clean to assure proper
operation of the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system.
WARNING
As there is the possibility of eye damage occurring from the laser, always heed the
following precautions:
 


¾ Never remove the sensor.



¾ A removed sensor will not meet the conditions for a class 1M laser under the IEC
60825-1 specifi cation and therefore eye safety cannot be assured.
 


¾ Do not peer into the sensor using optical instruments with a magnifi cation function
such as magnifying glasses, and microscopic and objective lenses within a distance of
100 mm (3.94 in) from the sensor.

Tire Pressure
Monitoring System
Warning Light
* When the warning light illuminates, and
the warning beep sound is heard (about 3
seconds), tire pressure is too low in one or
more tires.
WARNING
If the tire pressure monitoring system
warning light illuminates or fl ashes,
or the tire pressure warning beep
sound is heard, decrease vehicle
speed immediately and avoid sudden
maneuvering and braking:
If the tire pressure monitoring system
warning light illuminates or fl ashes, or
the tire pressure warning beep sound
is heard, it is dangerous to drive the
vehicle at high speeds, or perform
sudden maneuvering or braking.
Vehicle drivability could worsen and
result in an accident.
To determine if you have a slow leak or
a fl at, pull over to a safe position where
you can check the visual condition
of the tire and determine if you have
enough air to proceed to a place where
air may be added and the system
monitored again by an Authorized
Mazda Dealer or a tire repair station.

Do not ignore the TPMS Warning Light:
Ignoring the TPMS warning light is
dangerous, even if you know why it is
illuminated. Have the problem taken
care of as soon as possible before it
develops into a more serious situation
that could lead to tire failure and a
dangerous accident. Inspect the tires and adjust to the speci¿ ed
inÀ ation pressure (page 6-43 ).
N O T E
y Perform tire pressure adjustment when
the tires are cold. Tire pressure will vary
according to the tire temperature, therefore
let the vehicle stand for 1 hour or only drive
it 1.6 km (1 mile) or less before adjusting
the tire pressures. When pressure is adjusted
on hot tires to the cold inÀ ation pressure,
the TPMS warning light/beep may turn on
after the tires cool and pressure drops below
speci¿ cation.
Also, an illuminated TPMS warning light,
resulting from the tire air pressure dropping
due to cold ambient temperature will remain
illuminated even if the ambient temperature
rises. In this case, it will also be necessary
to adjust the tire air pressures. If the TPMS
warning light illuminates due to a drop in
tire air pressure, make sure to check and
adjust the tire air pressures.
y Tires lose air naturally over time and the
TPMS cannot tell if the tires are getting
too soft over time or you have a À at.
However, when you ¿ nd one low tire in a
set of four-that is an indication of trouble;
you should have someone drive the vehicle
slowly forward so you can inspect any low
tire for cuts and any metal objects sticking
through tread or sidewall. Put a few drops
of water in the valve stem to see if it bubbles
indicating a bad valve. Leaks need to be
addressed by more than simply reinÀ ating
the tire as leaks are dangerous — take it to
an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

* The light turns on if the windshield and
the radar sensor are dirty or there is a
malfunction in the system. Verify the reason why the warning light
is illuminated on the center display (page
7-24 ).
If the reason why the warning light is
illuminated is due to a dirty windshield, clean
the windshield.
If the warning light is illuminated because of
a dirty radar sensor, clean the front emblem.
For any other reasons, have the vehicle
inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
