196 Driving and Operating
Torque Lock
Torque lock is when the weight of
the vehicle puts too much force on
the parking pawl in the
transmission. This happens when
parking on a hill and shifting the
transmission into P (Park) is not
done properly and then it is difficult
to shift out of P (Park). To prevent
torque lock, set the parking brake
and then shift into P (Park). To find
out how, see "Shifting Into Park"
listed previously.
If torque lock does occur, the
vehicle may need to be pushed
uphill by another vehicle to relieve
the parking pawl pressure, so you
can shift out of P (Park).
Shifting out of Park
This vehicle is equipped with an
electronic shift lock release system.
The shift lock release is designed to
prevent movement of the shift lever
out of P (Park), unless the ignition is
in ON/RUN/START and the brake
pedal is applied.The shift lock release is always
functional except in the case of an
uncharged or low voltage (less than
9 volt) battery.
If the vehicle has an uncharged
battery or a battery with low voltage,
try charging or jump starting the
battery. See
Jump Starting 0307.
To shift out of P (Park):
1. Apply the brake pedal.
2. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN/ START.
3. Release the parking brake. See Parking Brake (Manual)
0 202 orParking Brake
(Electric) 0203.
4. Press the shift lever button.
5. Move the shift lever.
If unable to shift out of P (Park): 1. Fully release the shift lever button.
2. While holding down the brake pedal, press the shift lever
button again.
3. Move the shift lever. If the shift lever will not move from
P (Park), consult your dealer or a
professional towing service.
Parking over Things
That Burn

vehicle and ignite. Do not park
over papers, leaves, dry grass,
or other things that can burn.

To ensure proper engine
performance and long life, careful
attention must be paid to engine oil.
Following these simple, but
important steps will help protect
your investment:

Use engine oil approved to the
proper specification and of the
proper viscosity grade. See
“Selecting the Right Engine Oil”
in this section.
. Check the engine oil level
regularly and maintain the
proper oil level. See “Checking
Engine Oil” and“When to Add
Engine Oil” in this section.
. Change the engine oil at the
appropriate time. See Engine Oil
Life System 0256.
. Always dispose of engine oil
properly. See “What to Do with
Used Oil” in this section.
Checking Engine Oil
It is a good idea to check the engine
oil level at each fuel fill. In order to
get an accurate reading, the vehicle must be on level ground. The
engine oil dipstick handle is a loop.

oil dipstick.
1. If the engine has been running recently, turn off the engine and
allow several minutes for the oil
to drain back into the oil pan.
Checking the oil level too soon
after engine shutoff will not
provide an accurate oil level
reading.
{Warning
The engine oil dipstick handle
may be hot; it could burn you.
Use a towel or glove to touch the
dipstick handle.
2. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean paper towel or
cloth, then push it back in all
the way. Remove it again,
keeping the tip down, and
check the level.

Removal and Installation of the
Sealant Canister
To remove the sealant canister:1. Unwrap the sealant/air hose to access the canister release
button.
2. Press the canister release button (9).
3. Pull up and remove the canister.
4. Replace with a new canister which is available from your
dealer.
5. Push the new canister into place.
6. Rewrap the sealant/air hose.
Storing the Tire Sealant
and Compressor Kit
To access the tire sealant and
compressor kit: 1. Open the trunk. See Trunk 039.
2. Lift the cover.
3. Remove the strap.
4. Remove the tire sealant and compressor kit.
To store the tire sealant and
compressor kit, reverse the steps.
Jump Starting
For more information about the
vehicle battery, see Battery0268.
For the LF4 only, there is an
optional low mass battery that can
be used for Track events. If the
vehicle has the low mass battery
installed and the battery has a low
State of Charge (SOC), the vehicle
can be jump started the say way as
if the regular battery was in the
vehicle using the following
procedure. For more information on
the low mass battery, see Battery
0 268 andTrack Events and
Competitive Driving 0179.
If the battery has run down, try to
use another vehicle and some
jumper cables to start your vehicle.
Be sure to use the following steps to
do it safely.

Batteries can hurt you. They can
be dangerous because:. They contain acid that can
burn you.
. They contain gas that can
explode or ignite.
. They contain enough
electricity to burn you.
If you do not follow these steps
exactly, some or all of these
things can hurt you.
Caution
Ignoring these steps could result
in costly damage to the vehicle
that would not be covered by the
vehicle warranty. Trying to start
the vehicle by pushing or pulling it
will not work, and it could damage
the vehicle.
1. Good Battery Positive Post
2. Good Battery Negative Post
3. Discharged Battery Positive Post
4. Discharged Battery Negative Grounding Point
The jump start positive post (1) and
negative post (2) are on the battery
of the vehicle providing the jump
start.
The jump start positive post (3) and
the negative grounding point (4) for
the discharged battery are on the
passenger side of the vehicle. The positive jump start connection
for the discharged battery is under a
red cover. Remove the cover to
expose the terminal.
1. Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-volt battery
with a negative ground system.
Caution
If the other vehicle does not have
a 12-volt system with a negative
ground, both vehicles can be
damaged. Only use a vehicle that
has a 12-volt system with a
negative ground for jump starting.
2. Position the two vehicles so that they are not touching.
3. Set the parking brake firmly and put the shift lever in
P (Park) with an automatic
transmission, or Neutral with a
manual transmission. See
