Locking the passenger's door with the
emergency key
The mechanical locking device is located on the
end face of the passenger's door. It is only visible
when the door is open.

... Insert the key in the slot inside and turn it as
far as the stop to the right (if the door is on the
right* side) or to the left (if the door is on the
left side).

the passenger's door has been closed it can
no longer be opened from the outside. The door
can be opened from the inside by pulling the
door handle.
A WARNING
On vehicles with an anti-theft alarm system*,
do not leave anyone (especially children) in
the car if it is locked from the outside and the
safelock mechanism* is activated: the doors
and windows cannot then be opened from the
inside c::> page 32. Locked doors could delay
assistance in an emergency, potentially put­
ting lives at risk.
Anti-theft alarm system
Applies to: vehicles with anti-theft alarm system

If the anti-theft alarm system senses interfer­
ence with the vehicle it triggers an audible and
visible alarm. The anti-theft alarm system is acti­
vated when you lock the vehicle in the usual way
and is switched off again when you unlock the ve­
hicle.
The anti-theft alarm system comprises the fol­
lowing components:
Anti-theft alarm
The alarm is triggered if the bonnet, the boot lid
or any of the doors are forced open. The alarm
system is armed whenever the vehicle is locked .
If you unlock the vehicle by turning the key in the
driver's door lock, you should switch on the igni­
tion within 15 seconds to prevent the alarm from
being triggered. On some export versions, the ..,.

is triggered immediately when you open a
door.
To deactivate the alarm, switch on the ignition or
press the[@] button on the remote control key.
Int erior monitor and tow-away prot ection
When the vehicle is locked, the alarm will be trig­
gered if movements are detected in the interior
(e.g. by animals) or if the vehicle's inclination is
changed (e.g. during transport). You can prevent
the alarm from being triggered accidentally by
switching off the interior monitor and/or tow­
away protection. To do so, proceed as follows:
� Press the� button¢ Fig. 23. The LED in the
button will light up.
� If you now lock the vehicle, the interior monitor
and tow-away protection will remain deactiva­
ted until the vehicle is unlocked again.

The doors can no longer be opened from the in­
side. This makes it more difficult to break into
the vehicle ¢ A . The message Be aware of door
sa felock. See owner's manual appears on the in­
fotainment display when you switch off the igni­
tion as a reminder that the safelock mechanism*
will be activated. You can switch off the safelock
mechanism* by using one of the following op­
tions:
� Press the� button on the remote control key a
second time within 2 seconds. Or:
� Touch
the sensor on the door handle a second
time within 2 seconds (applies to vehicles with
convenience key). Or:
� Turn the emergency key in the door lock to the
lock position a second time within 2 seconds.
The alarm is triggered if you switch off the safe­
lock mechanism* and a door handle is then oper­
ated. To deactivate the alarm, switch on the igni­
tion or press the� button on the remote control
key.

A WARNING
Do not leave anyone (especially children) in
the car if it is locked from the outside and the
safelock mechanism* is activated: the doors
and windows cannot then be opened from the
inside. Locked doors could delay assistance in
an emergency, potentially putting lives at
risk.
CD CAUTION
If you switch off the safe lock mechanism*,
the interior monitor and tow-away protection
are automatically disabled, and vice versa.
This means that your vehicle is no longer
completely protected against theft.
The interior monitor and tow-away protection
will only function as intended if the windows
are closed.

� Pull down the boot lid and let it drop into the

A WARNING
- After closing the boot lid, always check that
the catch has engaged properly. The boot lid
could otherwise open suddenly when the ve­
hicle is moving -this could result in an acci-

- The boot lid must always be completely
closed when the vehicle is moving; other­
wise toxic exhaust fumes can be drawn into
the interior.
@ Note
When the vehicle is locked, you can unlock
the boot lid separately by pressing the�
button on the remote control key. The boot
lid will lock automatically when you close it
again.
Releasing the boot lid manually
The boot lid can be released manually from the
inside.

the switch briefly to the second stop:
the window will automatically open/close all
the way. The window will stop moving immedi­
ately if the switch is operated again.
� To set an intermediate position, press/pull the
switch to the first position until the window has
reached the desired position.
Switches for electric windows

A WARNING
- Always take the key with you when leaving
the vehicle -even if you only intend to be
gone for a short time. This is especially im­
portant if children are left in the car. They
might otherwise be able to start the engine
or use power-operated equipment such as
the electric windows -this could lead to in­
juries. The window switches are only deacti­
vated when the driver's door or the passeng­
er's door is opened.
- Always be careful when closing the win­
dows. Careless use of the electric windows
can cause severe injuries.
- When locking the vehicle from the outside,
make sure that nobody is inside the vehicle,

- The windows can be operated for about ten
minutes after the ignition has been switch­
ed off. The window switches are only deacti­
vated when the driver's door or the passeng­
er's door is opened.
- When the doors are opened, or while the
soft top is being opened or closed, the win­
dows are automatically opened about
10mm.
Convenience open/close function
All the windows can be opened or closed at the
same time.

control key until all the windows have reached

If you wish to use the convenience open function
for the windows, set Long press to open win­

A WARNING
- Take care when closing the windows and the
soft top*. Careless or uncontrolled use can
cause injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should only use the
remote control key to open and close the
windows and soft top* when you are at least
2 metres away from the vehicle. To avoid in­
juries, always keep an eye on the windows
and the soft top* when pressing the I:@ but­
ton to close them. The windows and soft top
stop moving as soon as the I:@ button is re­
leased.
What to do after a malfunction
You can reactivate the one-touch open and close
function if it fails to operate.
"" Pull and hold the electric window switch until
the window is fully closed.
"" Release the switch and then pull it again for at
least one second.
Garage door opener
(Homelink)
Description
Applies to: vehicles with garage door opener (Homelink)

The garage door opener (Homelink) allows you
to activate garage doors, security systems, home
or office lighting and other electric devices by
means of control buttons inside your car. It com­
prises three buttons, integrated in the operating
unit above the interior mirror in the headliner, �

which perform the functions of up to three hand­
held transmitters.
To operate the desired systems with the garage
door opener, you first need to program the but­
tons in the operating unit.
A WARNING
When you are operating or programming the
garage door opener, make sure that no per­
sons or objects are close to the devices receiv­
ing the transmitter signals. Otherwise, per­
sons might be injured or other damage
caused by moving parts.
(D Note
- For security reasons we recommend that
you delete the programming of the buttons
prior to selling your vehicle.

Controls

Important: The button in the operating unit must
be programmed <=> page 36 and the vehicle
must be within range of the garage door or other
system you wish to operate.
.. To open the garage door, press the button. The
green LED CD will light up or flash.
.. To close the garage door, press the button
again.
Note
When opening/closing the garage door, do
not keep the button pressed for more than
36 20
seconds; otherwise the garage door open­
er will switch to the programming mode.
Programming the transmitter

Programming a button: Stage 1 (at the
operating unit)
1. Switch on the ignition.
2. Press
and hold down the two outer buttons
on the operating unit<=> page 36, Fig. 28 until
the yellow LED@ goes out and the green
LED CD flashes. This procedure will delete the
standard factory settings and does not need
to be repeated when programming the other
buttons.
3. Briefly
press the particular button in the op­
erating unit that you would like to program.
4. Wait until the yellow LED@flashes . The
programming mode is then activated for 5
minutes.
5. Step in front of your vehicle with the original
hand-held transmitter for the system you
wish to assign to the button in the operating
unit.
Programming a button: Stage 2 (at the
radiator grille)
6. Hold
the hand-held transmitter in front of
your car's radiator grille<=> Fig. 29.
7. Now press and hold the button on the hand­
held transmitter until the turn signals on
your vehicle start to flash. This can take up to
30 seconds.
8. If the hazard lights flash three times, the
button has been programmed successfully. If
the hazard lights flash once only, the

operation has failed or the five
minute programming period has expired. Re­
peat the programming procedure starting
with the 3rd step, or try holding the trans­
mitter nearer or further away from the radia­
tor grille.
9. If the garage door or other system still fails
to be activated using the buttons in the oper­
ating unit after programming is completed,
it is possible that the system might be work­
ing with a rolling code instead of the normal
fixed security code. If this is the case, a roll­
ing code progr amming is required in addi­
tion to the steps described above
¢page 37.
Follow the instructions above to program the
other two buttons. Start with the 3rd step.
Erasing the button programming
Programmed buttons can only be erased all at
once; it is not possible to erase them individually.
Reprogram the buttons if necessary.
� Switch on the ignition.
� Press and hold down the two outer buttons on
the operating unit until the yellow LED @
goes
out and the green LED CD
flashes.
Reprogramming the buttons
� Switch on the ignition.
� To reprogram an individual button, press and
hold the desired button until the green LED CD
goes out and the yellow LED @
starts to flash
(after about 20 seconds). Then release the but­
ton immediately. The programming mode is
then activated for S minutes.
� Continue with the 5th step.

- The required distance between the hand­
held transmitter and the Homelink module
inside the radiator grille¢ Fig. 29 depends
on the system you are programming.
- With some types of systems, you may need
to briefly release the button during pro­
gramming and then press it again. When
programming a new device, keep the button
pressed for at least 15 seconds before try- Doors

ing again with the transmitter in a different
position. Watch out for your vehicle's haz­
ard warning lights while doing so.
Rolling code programming
Applies to: vehicles with garage door opener (Homelink)
Some devices require rolling code programming.
Identifying a rolling code
� Press a programmed button in the operating
unit again and hold it down.
� Watch the green LED CD
¢ page 36, Fig. 28. If
the green LED starts flashing rapidly, this indi­
cates that the system you wish to operate, such
as a garage door, is equipped with a rolling
code.
� Program the rolling code as follows:
Activating a system's drive unit
� Locate
the programming button on the sys­
tem's drive unit. The exact location and colour
of the button may vary depending on the type
of system.
� Press
the programming button on the system's
drive unit (this will normally cause an indicator
lamp on the unit to light up). You now have
about 30 seconds to start and complete pro­
gramming of the button in the operating unit.
Programming the button in the operating
unit
� Press the previously programmed button in the
operating unit for 2 seconds.
� Press the button for 2 seconds again to com­
plete rolling code programming.
� For some systems, the button may have to be
pressed a third time to complete the program­
ming sequence.
After programming, the system should recognise
the signal and respond when the button in the
operating unit is pressed. Now the other control
buttons can be programmed as required.

- Having a second person assist you makes
programming of the rolling code easier and

Soft top
General notes
The soft top opens and closes automatically.
When the top opens, it folds away completely in­
to the storage box. The soft top can be opened or
closed at a speed of up to SO km/h.
In normal conditions the soft top is windproof
and waterproof. In extremely bad weather (such
as torrential or continuous rain), a few droplets
of water may possibly form inside the car. This is
quite normal, and no cause for concern.
To preserve the appearance of the soft top and
keep it waterproof, please follow the instructions
for cleaning and care ¢page 263, Care of vehi­
cle and cleaning. You should also note the fol­
lowing points:
- Open and stow the soft top only when it is
clean and dry. Pressure creases can form if the
soft top is stowed when damp, and mildew or
other damage can occur if left for long periods.
To avoid scratching or damaging the soft top,
do not use sharp objects to remove ice and
snow. A normal ice scraper can be used to clear
the rear window.
- Do not leave the soft top open for weeks at a
time to prevent any discolouration in the folds
of the fabric.
- Do not open the soft top at temperatures be­
low O 0
C. The fabric loses its elasticity at sub­
zero temperatures.

� Switch on the ignition.
� To open/close the soft top, pull/press and hold
the switch until the operation is complete.
Opening and closing the soft top (one-touch
function)
� Switch on the ignition.
� Briefly pull/push the soft top switch to open/
close the soft top completely. It is not necessa­
ry to hold the switch. The one-touch function is
available at speeds of between 6 km/h and
SO km/h.
The status of the soft top is shown in the instru­
ment cluster when the soft top switch is operat­
ed.
If the soft top does not open/close when you op­
erate the switch, a message will appear
¢page 40.
A WARNING
- When operating the soft top make sure that
external factors, e.g. wind, do not affect the
function of the soft top and do not incon­
venience or endanger other road users.
- Never drive with the soft top not correctly
locked in place. There is a danger that the
fabric could be caught by the airstream and
blown open. This could cause an accident,
possibly resulting in personal injury or dam­
age to the car.
- When opening and closing the soft top,
make sure there is no risk of injury from the
moving parts of the frame, etc.
- Since the rearward view is obstructed while
the soft top is opening or closing, you
should avoid operating the soft top when re­
versing.
CD CAUTION
- To prevent damage to the soft top:
- Do not put any items in the soft top stor-
age box.
- Always ensure that there is sufficient
clearance above the soft top when open­
ing or closing it .

� Note
- To avoid draining the vehicle battery, do not
operate the soft top repeatedly with the en­
gine switched off.
-A message will be displayed in the instru­
ment cluster if a soft top malfunction oc­
curs ¢ page 40.
- The soft top can also be operated manually
in the event of a malfunction ¢page 41,
Manual operation of the soft top. The cause
of the fault should be traced and rectified
by a qualified workshop as soon as possible.
- If you park the car with the soft top open,
remember that this leaves the interior ex­
posed to intruders and to potential damage
in sudden adverse weather. Lock any be­
longings you leave behind in the luggage
compartment. Close the soft top before you
leave the vehicle unattended.
- The windows in the doors are automatically
lowered slightly while the soft top is open­
ing/closing.

The soft top stops moving immediately if you re­
lease the key. It is possible to operate this fea­
ture with the convenience key* up to a distance of
approximately 4 metres.

Driver messages

This message will appear if a malfunction occurs.

Soft top: operation currently not possible
If the soft top is operated repeatedly, the over­
load cut-off is activated for approx. 15 to 30 mi­
nutes. You can open/close the soft top again af­
ter this period.
Soft top: operation currently not possible.
Engine must be running
The power-operated soft top is deactivated if the
battery voltage is too low. You can open/close
the soft top again after starting the engine.
Soft top: operation currently not possible.
Outside temperature too low
The soft top cannot be opened at temperatures
below -15 °C.
Soft top: operation currently not possible.
Speed too high
For safety reasons, the power-operated soft top
cannot be opened at road speeds of over 50 km/
h. Reduce speed to open/close the soft top.
