prevent the front side windows from misting
up in wet weather, it's a good idea to open the
side air outlets and point them to the side.
� Switching air recirculation on/off
The air recirculation mode can be switched on
manually or automatically*.
- To switch the manual air recirculation mode
on/off, press the[;] button.
- The automatic* air recirculation function must
be activated on the infotainment system. Se
lect the following on the infotainment system:

button > Car > left control button > Ve
hicle settings > A/C > Auto recirculation. The
air quality sensor, which is designed for the de
tection of diesel and petrol exhaust fumes, au
tomatically switches the air recirculation mode
on or off depending on the level of pollution in
the outside air.
In air recirculation mode, the air from the interi
or of the vehicle is filtered and recirculated. This
setting prevents fumes etc. from entering the in
terior. We recommend switching on the air recir
culation mode when driving through a tunnel or
in traffic queues ¢ A.

Switching the defroster on/off
The windscreen and side windows are defrosted
or demisted as quickly as possible. Most of the
air comes out of the outlets below the wind
screen. The air recirculation mode is deactivated.
The temperature is regulated automatically.
The defroster is switched off when the !AUTO!
button is pressed.

Switching the rear window heating
on/off
If the rear window heating is activated with the
ignition switched on, the battery management
determines whether or not the battery charge
level is sufficient for the rear window heating to
be switched on. Otherwise the rear window heat
ing operates when the engine is running, and
switches off automatically after about Heating

10 -20 minutes, depending on the outside tem
perature.
To switch on the rear window heating perma
nently, press and hold the l[jjj) REA
R!
button for at
least two seconds. This setting will be stored for
approximately 15 minutes after the ignition is
switched off.
A WARNING
For reasons of safety you should not leave the
air recirculation switched on for too long. This
mode prevents fresh air from entering the ve
hicle, so the windows can mist over if the air
cooling is switched off. Bad visibility can
cause an accident.

To adjust the air flow direction, turn the ribbed
outer adjustment ring(!)¢ Fig. 67.
To adjust the air flow intensity, move the lev
er @ on the air outlet. To shut off the air flow,
move the lever all the way to the left.

The seat heating has three levels. The heat level
is indicated by an LED.
... To switch on the seat heating, press the� but
ton once .
... To reduce the level, press the� button again .
... To switch off the seat heating, press the� but-
ton repeatedly until all the LEDs have gone out.
The seat heating automatically switches from
level 3 to level 2 after about 10 minutes.
When not to switch on the seat heating
Do not switch on the seat heating in the follow
ing situations:
- Seat is unused
- A protective cover is fitted on the seat
- A child seat is fitted on the seat
- The seat is damp or wet
A WARNING
People with limited capacity to feel pain or
sense temperature could burn themselves
when using the seat heating. These people
must not use the seat heating -risk of injury!
CD CAUTION
To avoid damaging the heating elements of
the seat heating, please do not kneel on the
seat or apply sharp pressure at a single point.
Note
- The setting for the driver's seat heating is
assigned to the key in use.
- If the passenger's seat heating was on when
you last switched off the ignition, it will be
switched on automatically only if the igni
tion is switched on again within 10 minutes.
64 Neck
heating
Applies to: vehicles with neck heating
The neck heating works when the engine is run
ning.

The neck heating has three levels. The neck heat
ing is switched on when you turn the knob clock
wise ¢ Fig. 70. The LEDs above the seat symbol
indicate the blower level. To reduce the blower
level, turn the knob anti-clockwise. To switch off
the neck heating, turn the knob anti-clockwise
until all the LEDs have gone out.
The neck heating automatically switches from
level 3 to level 2 after about 6 minutes when the
soft top is closed.
A WARNING
- People with limited capacity to feel pain or
sense temperature could burn themselves
when using the neck heating. These people
must not use the neck heating -risk of in
jury!
- If the air outlets in the seat ¢ Fig. 69 are
covered by items of clothing or similar while
the neck heating is on, the air that emerges
immediately afterwards can be very hot.

immediate vicinity of the air outlets.

Supplementary heater
Applies to: vehicles with diesel engine
On cold days, the interior of the vehicle warms up
more quickly with the supplementary electric
heater. The supplementary heater is switched on
automatically as required, depending on the set
ting on the vehicle heating system.
The supplementary heater function can be
switched on or off as required. Select the follow
ing on the infotainment system: !MENU! button>
Car > left control button > Vehicle settings > A/C
> Auto supplementary heater. Heating

Driving
General notes
Running in
A new vehicle should be run in over a distance of
1,500 km. For the first 1,000 km the engine
speed should not exceed 2/3 of the maximum
permissible engine speed -do not use full throt
tle. From 1,000 to 1,500 km you can gradually
increase the engine rpm and road speed.
During its first few hours of running, the internal
friction in the engine is greater than later on
when all the moving parts have bedded down.
How the vehicle is driven for the first 1,500 km
also influences the engine quality. After this peri
od you should continue driving at moderate en
gine speeds, in particular when the engine is
cold. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the
engine and increases the potential mileage which
can be covered by the engine.
You should also avoid driving with the engine
speed too low. Change down to a lower gear
when the engine no longer runs "smoothly". Ex
cessively high engine speeds are prevented by an
automatic rev limiter.
Letting the engine warm up/cool down
Applies to: Sand RS models
You can reduce the amount of wear and tear on
your vehicle during a sporty driving session sim
ply by adopting a more restrained driving style
while the engine is warming up and cooling
down.
When the engine is cold, the engine speed is limi
ted so that the full range of engine power is not
available. Once the engine has reached operating
temperature, the rev Limit moves to a higher
range of engine speeds. In addition, the tyres will
not develop their full grip potential until they
have had a chance to warm up on the road.
Even though the engine continues to be cooled
after you switch it off, it is particularly important
to give it time to cool down before parking. The
engine, brakes, exhaust system and gearbox will

reach very high temperatures when you adopt
a sporty driving style. Before you park the vehi
cle, allow it to cool down to normal temperature
by driving at moderate engine speeds for several
miles.
Avoiding damage to the car
CD CAUTION
Take care not to damage low-mounted parts
of the car (such as the spoiler or exhaust sys
tem) on steep ramps, uneven road surfaces or
roadside kerbs, etc. This applies especially to
vehicles with low ground clearance and to all
vehicles when fully laden.
Driving through water on roads
Please note the following in order to prevent
damage to the vehicle when driving through wa
ter (e.g. on flooded roads):
- The water level must not be higher than the ve
hicle's underbody.
- Do not drive faster than walking pace.
A WARNING
After driving through water, mud, sludge,
etc., the braking effect can be delayed slightly
due to moisture on the discs and brake pads.
Applying the brakes carefully several times
will remove the moisture and restore the full
braking effect.
CD CAUTION
- Parts of the vehicle (e.g. engine, gearbox,
running gear or electrical components) can
be badly damaged when driving through
water.
- Always switch off the start/stop system*
¢ page 71 before driving through water.

Never spill fluids on a hot engine. These flu
ids can cause a fire (e.g. radiator anti
freeze).
- Take care not to cause short circuits in the
electrical system, especially when working
on the battery.
- When working in the engine compartment
be aware that the radiator fan may start
running suddenly, even if the ignition is
switched off -risk of injury!
- Do not unscrew the cap on the expansion
tank when the engine is hot. The cooling
system is under pressure.
- Protect face, hands and arms by covering
the cap with a large, thick rag to protect
against escaping coolant and steam.
- Never remove the engine cover panel -risk
of burns!
- If any tests have to be performed with the
engine running, there is an extra safety risk
from the rotating parts, such as the drive
belts, alternator and radiator fan, etc., and
from the high-voltage ignition system.
- Vehicles with automatic gearbox: Never
open the throttle inadvertently (for instance
by hand from the engine compartment) if a
gear is engaged while the vehicle is station
ary with the engine running. The vehicle will
otherwise start moving immediately and
could cause an accident.
- Observe the following additional warnings if
work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Do not smoke.
- Never work near naked flames.
- Always keep an approved fire extinguisher
immediately available.
- Any work on the batteries and electrical sys
tem in your vehicle entails a risk of injury
and chemical burns in addition to danger of
accident or fire. For this reason, you must
have the work carried out by a qualified
workshop.
CD CAUTION
When topping up fluids make sure the correct
fluid is put into the correct filler opening. This Checking

can otherwise cause serious malfunctions or
engine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Inspect the ground underneath your vehicle
regularly so that any leaks are detected at an
early stage. If you find spots of oil or other
fluids, have your vehicle inspected in the
workshop.

On right-hand drive vehicles* some of the
containers/ reservoirs mentioned below are
located on the other side of the engine com
partment.
Opening/closing bonnet
The bonnet is released from inside the vehicle.

The wiper arms should be resting on the wind
screen: make sure they are not in a raised posi-
tion. Otherwise the paint may get damaged.

system
Coolant
The engine cooling system is filled at the factory
with a mixture of conditioned water and coolant
additive. This coolant must not be changed.
The coolant level is monitored by a warning lamp
• ¢page 14. However, we recommend that it
should be checked occasionally.
If you do need to top up the coolant, use a mix
ture of water and coolant additive. We recom
mend mixing coolant additive with distilled wa
ter.
Coolant additive
The coolant additive contains anti-freeze and cor
rosion protection agent. Only use one of the fol
lowing coolant additives. It is possible to mix
these additives.

be mixed with the water depends on the temper
atures to be expected in the winter season. If the
anti-freeze concentration is too low, the coolant
can freeze and cause engine damage.

CD CAUTION
- Have your qualified workshop check the
cooling system before the winter season to
make sure that the anti-freeze concentra
tion is adequate for the conditions to be ex
pected. This applies particularly if you drive
into a colder climate zone.
- To prevent damage to the engine, do not
use a different type of anti-freeze additive if
the approved type of additive is not availa- Checking

ble. In this case use only water and bring
the coolant concentration back up to the
correct level as soon as possible by putting
in the specified additive.
-Always top up with fresh, unused coolant.
- Radiator sealants must not be added to the
coolant.

and topping up fluids
Any loss of coolant normally indicates a leak in
the cooling system. Drive to a qualified workshop
without delay and have the cooling system
checked. If there are no leaks in the system, a
loss of coolant can only occur if the coolant boils
and is forced out of the system as a result of
overheating.
A WARNING
- The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not unscrew the cap on the expansion tank
when the engine is hot: you could be scal
ded by escaping steam.
- The coolant and coolant additive can be a
health hazard. Store the coolant additive in
the original container in a safe place out of
reach of children -risk of poisoning.
- When working in the engine compartment
be aware that the radiator fan may start
running suddenly, even if the ignition is
switched off- risk of injury!
CD CAUTION
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty. Air could have got into the cooling
system -risk of engine damage! In this case,
do NOT drive on. Obtain professional assis
tance.

Having brake fluid changed
Have the brake fluid changed regularly by a quali
fied workshop.
A WARNING
- If the brake fluid level is under the MIN
mark, the effectiveness of the brakes and
therefore the safety of the vehicle may be
impaired -risk of accident! Do not drive on.
Obtain professional assistance.
- Heavy use of the brakes may cause a vapour
lock if old brake fluid is left in the system.
This would seriously impair the effective
ness of the brakes and the safety of the car
- risk of accident!
CD CAUTION
- If the brake fluid level is above the MAX
mark, brake fluid may escape via the cap on
the reservoir in certain circumstances and
cause damage to the vehicle.
- Brake fluid must not be allowed to come in
to contact with the vehicle's body, other
wise it will attack the paintwork.
Battery General warnings for batteries
Because of the complexity of the power supply,
any battery work, such as disconnection, replace
ment, etc. must be carried out by a qualified
workshop ¢ ,& .
The term "vehicle battery" refers to the 12 Volt
battery in your vehicle.

Audi Genuine Tyres
Audi Genuine Tyres with the marking "AO" are
specially matched to your Audi. When used prop
erly, these tyres meet the highest standards in
safety and handling. Your specialist retailer will
be glad to provide more information.
_& WARNING
- Use only tyre/rim combinations and match
ing wheel bolts approved by Audi. Otherwise
damage to the vehicle and an accident could
result.
- For technical reasons, it is not possible to
use wheels from other vehicles. In certain
cases, it is not even possible to use wheels
from another vehicle of the same model.
- It is very important to ensure that the tyres
you have chosen have adequate clearance.
When selecting replacement tyres, do not
rely entirely on the nominal tyre size
marked on the tyre; with some makes of
tyre the effective tyre size can differ signifi
cantly from the nominal dimensions, even
though the tyres have the same size desig
nation. Inadequate tyre clearance can result
in damage to the tyres or the vehicle, caus
ing a serious safety risk.
-Avoid running the car on tyres that are more
than 6 years old. If you have no alternative,
you should drive slowly and with extra care
at all times.
- The use of run-flat tyres on your vehicle is
NOT authorised! Unauthorised use can cause
an accident or damage your vehicle.
- If wheel trims are fitted after the car is pur
chased, ensure that there is an adequate
flow of air for cooling the brakes -risk of ac
cident!

Tyre wear / damage

Tyre wear
Inspect the tyres regularly for damage.
- The wear on under or over-inflated tyres is sig
nificantly higher.
- Fast cornering, heavy acceleration and hard
braking all increase tyre wear.
- If you notice excessive tyre wear, have the
wheel alignment checked by a qualified work
shop.
- Have your tyres rebalanced if steering wheel vi
brations indicate an imbalance. Otherwise, the
tyres and other parts of the vehicle may wear
faster.
Tread wear indicators
The original tyres on your vehicle have 1.6 mm
high tread wear indicators

across the tread at regular intervals. The letters
"TWI" or triangles on the sidewall indicate the
positions of the tread wear indicators.

Changing wheels round
Wheels should be changed round regularly to en
sure that the wear is equal on all tyres. Fit the
wheels from the rear axle on the front axle and
vice-versa. All the tyres will then last for about
the same time.
