Light and Vision
The coming home and leaving h ome functions
only operate when it is dark and t he light switch
is in the AUTO position

Auto headlights*
W hen the light swi tch is in the A UTO ~ page 48
position, the sw itch-on po int of the lights can be
cha nged in the automatic driving light function.
Daytime running lights
USA models :
You can switch the daytime r unning
lights
on and off .
Canada models: The funct ion cannot be tu rned
off .
It is activated automatically each t ime the ig­
n ition is switched on.
Tra vel mode*
The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
vides stronger illumination on the side of the
road on which you are driving.
If you are driving
in a cou ntry that dr ives on the opposite side of
the road from you r own country, this will cause
g lar e fo r oncom ing dr ive rs . To p revent glare:
- Travel mode must be selected in veh icles w ith
Xenon headlights* .
- In vehicles with halogen headlights, certain
areas of the headlight lenses must be cove red
with waterproof adhesive covers that prev ent
l ight from passing through. For more informa­
tion, ple ase see you r auth orized Audi dea le r or
a uthorized repair fa ci lity .
When travel mode is ac tiva ted, a disp lay in
t he dr ive r inf orm ation sys tem in dicates this
e ach t ime yo u sw itch the ignition on .

Emergency flashers

The emergency flashers makes other motorists
aware that you or your ve hicle are in an emergen­
cy situat io n .

When the emergency flashers are on, all four

You can indicate a lane change or a turn when the
emergency flashers are switched on by using the
turn signal lever . The emergency flashers stop
tempora rily .

The emergency flashers will turn on automatical­
l y if you a re in an accident where the airbag has
deployed .
@ Tips
You should turn on the emergency flashers
when:
-you are the last vehicle standi ng in a traffic
jam so that any other vehicles com ing can
see yo u, or when
- yo ur ve hicle has broken down or yo u are in
an eme rge ncy sit uat ion, or w hen
-your vehicle is be ing towed by a tow tru ck or
if yo u are towing another vehicle behin d
you.

Sea ts and stor age
- Use only soft cups in the cupholder. Hard
cups and g lasses can cause injury in an acci­
dent.
- Never use the cupholder or adapter as an
ashtray -risk of fire.
(D Note
On ly drink containe rs with lids should be car"
r ied in the cupholder . Liquid co uld spill out
and damage your vehicle's electronic equip­
ment or stain the upho lstery, etc.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and can
be lo cked .

On the right side in the glove compa rtment is a
holder with the key body into which the emerge n­
cy key m ust be cl ipped to be able to start the ve­
hicle.
A WARNING
To red uce the risk of personal injury in an acc i­
dent or sudden stop, always keep the glove
compartment closed wh ile driving.

Additional storage
There a re a variety of storage compartments and
fasteners in var ious places in the veh icle .
- In the roof head liner above t he rearview m irror .
- On the back of the fron t seat . The compart-
ment can hold a maximum we ight of 1 kg .
- On the left and right of the luggage compart­
ment, beh ind the side trim .
- Garment hooks on the pillars in the rear of the
vehicle .
.,&. WARNING
- When driving, do not leave any hard objects
on the rear window shelf o r allow your pet
to sit on the shelf . They co uld become a haz­
ard for vehicle occupants in the event of
sudden b raking or a crash .
- Always remove objects from the instr ument
panel. Any items no t stored co uld slide
aro und inside t he vehi cle while drivi ng or
when acce le rating or when a pplying the
brakes or when dr iving around a corner.
- When you are driving make sure that any­
thing you may have placed in the center con­
sole or other storage locations cannot fa ll
out into the footwells. In case of sudden
braking you wo uld not be able to brake or
accelerate.
- Any articles of clothing that you have hung up must not interfere with the driver 's view .
The coat hooks are designed on ly for light­
we ight clothing . Never ha ng a ny clot hing
w it h ha rd, pointed o r heavy ob jects in the
pockets on t he coa t hooks. Du ring sudden
braking or in an acciden t -espe cially if the
ai rbag is deployed -these ob jects cou ld in­
jure any passengers inside the veh icle .
- To reduce the r is k of person al injury i n an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the
glove compartment closed while dr iving.

-The coat hooks must only be used for light­
weight clothing . Do not leave any heavy or
sharp edged objects in the pockets which
may interfere with the side curtain airbag
deployment and can cause personal injury in
a crash .
- Do not use coat hangers for hanging cloth­ ing on the coat hooks as this can interfere
with proper deployment of the side curtain
airbags in an accident.
- Do not hang heavy objects on the coat
hooks, as they could cause personal injury in
a sudden stop.
-Always keep the compartment above the
rearview mirror closed while driving to re­
duce the risk of injury in the event of sudden
braking maneuvers or a collision.

Objects located on the rear shelf that rub
against the rear window could damage the
heating wires for the rear window defogger.

-A vent slot is located between the shelf and
the rear window. Do not block the vent with
any items you may place on the rear window
shelf.
- Do not p lace bulky items on the rear window
shelf as they could restrict or block the driv­
er's vision in the rear view mirror.
Roof rack

Additional cargo can be carried with a roof lug­
gage rack .

"'Always read and follow the instructions provid­
ed by the roof rack manufacturer when instal­
ling the roof rack system.
If luggage or cargo is to be carried on the roof,
you must observe the following :
- Only use roof racks approved for your vehicle .
These approved roof racks are the basis for a
complete roof rack system . Add it ional attach­
ments or carrier systems are needed to trans­
port luggage and sports equipment. We recom­
mend using roof racks from the Audi original
accessories program.
- When insta lling the roof rack, make sure it is
only mounted on the designated locations on
the roof

- We recommend that you keep the installation
instructions for your roof rack system together
with your Owner's literature in the vehicle .
When should the roof rack be removed?
-Before going through an automatic car wash (it
is best to ask the car wash operator for advice).
- When not in use, to reduce fuel consumption,
wind noise and to guard against theft .
_&. WARNING
- Use of an unapproved roof rack or incorrect
mounting of an approved roof rack can
cause the roof rack or the items attached to
it to fall off the roof onto the road.
- Objects falling from the roof of a vehicle can
cause a crash and personal injury.
- Only mount the roof rack on the designated
locations on the roof

-When driving with a roo f rack system,
changes to the center of gravity and wind
resistance can change the vehicle handling
and lead to a collision . A lways adapt your
dr iv ing and your speed to the current condi·
t ions .

- Your vehicle warranty does not cover any
damages to the vehicle caused by using roof
racks or mounting structures not approved
by Aud i for your vehicle . The same applies to
damage resulting from incorrect roof rack i nst allation .
- Always check the roof rack mount ings and
hardware befo re each trip and dur ing a tr ip
to make s ure everyt hing is securely tight­
ened.
If necessary, ret ighten the mo unt ings
and check the entire system from time to
time.
- After mounting a roo f rack system, or when
you transport objects on the roof of your ve­
hicle, the height of the veh icle is naturally
i nc reased. Be careful when driving under
l ow bridges or in parking garages for exam­
ple . This could cause damage to the load
and even the vehicle itself.
- Make sure that the open rear lid and the
su nroof do not come into contact with ob·
j ects on the roof .
Loading the roof rack
Always distribute loads evenly. Make sure any ­
thing on the roof rack is securely tied down .

The max imum perm issible roo f weight is
2 00 lb
( 90 kg ).
The roof weight is the total of the
weight of the roof rack, the attachme nts and the
cargo you are carrying . You must also not exceed
the maximum load weight fo r the roof rack yo u
a re using.

When using a roof rack system wh ich has a lower
l oad carrying capacity, you must not use up the
total max imum permissib le load carry ing capac i­
ty specified above. Instead, you should load the
roof rack sys tem only to the maximum capacity
specified by the manufacturer of the roof rack
system.
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used to
secure items to the roof rack can fail du ring
hard brak ing or in a collision and cause seri­
ous persona l injury .
- Ma ke sure the roof rack is i nstalled exactly
as spe cified above

cur ing items to the roof ra ck to help preven t
items from sh ifting or flying forward .
- Items on the roof rack must a lways be se·

- The use of a roof rack can negative ly affect
the way a vehicle handles . Cargo that is
large, heavy, b ulk y, long or flat w ill have a
greater negative influence on the vehicle's
aerodynamics, center of grav ity and overa ll
handling . Always drive slowly, avoid sudden
braking and maneuvers when transporting
cargo on the roof of your vehicle .
- Never exceed the maximum permissib le
load carry ing capacity of the roof of your ve­
hicle, the perm iss ible axle weights and the
perm iss ible total we ight of your vehicle
~ page 255, Weights.

Make sure that the opened rear lid does not
come in contact with the cargo on the roof .
@ For the sake of the environment
As a result of the increased wind resistance
created by a roof rack, your vehicle is using
fuel unnecessarily . So remove the roof rack
after using it .

Warm and cold
Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the air in the veh icle inter ior. It
is the most effective when the windows and sun ­
roof are closed. If there is a build-up of heat in­
side the vehicle, ventilation can help to speed up
the cooling process.
I n all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
b lower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera­
ture .
Condensat ion from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water under the veh icle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
P ollutant filt er
The pol lutant filte r removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the a ir.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the intervals specif ied in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the a ir cond it ione r can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air pollut ion, the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than specified i n your Aud i War­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your author ized Audi Service Advisor for advice.
Ke y cod ed setting s
The climate control settings are automatically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use .

Reduced visib ility is dangerous and can ca use
accidents.
- For safe dr iv ing it is very impo rtan t that all
windows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
t ion .

- Complete ly familiarize yourself with the
proper use and function of the heating and
ventilation system and espec ially how to de­
fog and defrost the wi ndows .
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshield first, using the heat­ ing and vent ilation system. The washer solu­
tion may freeze on the windshield and re­
duce visibi lity.
(D Note
- If you suspect that the air conditioner has
been damaged, sw itch the system off to
avoid further damage and have it inspected
by a q ualified dealership.
- Repa irs to the Aud i air cond itioner requ ire
special techn ica l know ledge and spec ial
tools. Contact an a uthorized Audi dealer fo r
assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
By reduc ing the amo unt of fuel you use, you
also reduce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the a ir.
(D Tips
- Keep t he a ir intake slots (in front of the
windshield) free from ice, snow and debr is
in orde r to maintain the prope r funct ion of
the climate control system .
- The energy management sys tem may sw itch
the seat heating* o r rea r window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are available
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of clothing on
the luggage compartment cover, ensure
that the openings are not covered.

Improperly stored luggage or other items can
fly through the vehicle causing serious per­
sonal injury in the event of hard braking or an
accident . To help reduce the risk of serious
personal injury:
- Always put objects, for example, luggage or
other heavy items in the luggage compart­
ment.
- Always secure objects in the luggage com­
partment using the tie-down eyelets and
suitable straps.
A WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles. To help reduce the risk of a loss
of control leading to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
-Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible .
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the
luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating
or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceed ing permissible weight
standards can cause the veh icle to slide and
hand le differently.
- Please observe information on safe driving
qpage 121.
A WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be­
cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid
open, observe the fo llowing notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the sunroof,
Driving safety
-Open all air outlets in the instrument pan­
el,
- Switch off the air recirculation
,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed .
A WARNING

Always make sure that the doors, a ll win-
dows, the sunroof and the rear lid are secure­
ly closed and locked to reduce the risk of in­
jury when the vehicle is not being used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked .
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­
cially with the rear lid left open . A child
could crawl into the vehicle through the lug­
gage compartment and close the rear lid be­
coming trapped and unable to get out . Be­
ing trapped in a vehicle can lead to ser ious
personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the vehi­ cle .
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment . Vehicle occupants must al­
ways be properly restrained in one of the ve­
h icle 's seat ing positions.
(D Tips
-Air circulation helps to reduce window fog­
ging . Stale air escapes to the outs ide
through vents in the tr im panel. Be sure to
keep these slots free and open.
- The tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The t ire pressure is shown on the tire
pressure label. The tir e pressure label is lo­
cated on the driver's side B-pillar . The tire
pressure label lists the recommended cold
tire inflation pressures for the vehicle at its
maximum capacity weight and the tires that
were on your vehicle at the time it was man­
ufactured. For recommended tire pressures
for normal load conditions, please see chap­
ter

safety seat on the front passenger seat be­ cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immed iate ly install
the rear-fac ing ch ild safety seat in a rear
seating pos it ion and have the airbag system
inspected by your a uthorized Audi dea le r.
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety seats installed
on the front passenger's seat may interfere
with the deployment of the airbag and
cause serious personal injury to the child.
~ WARNING
If, in except ional circumstances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing chi ld restraint on the
front passenger 's seat:
- Always ma ke sure the forward-fac ing seat
has been designed and certified by its man­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and s ide a irbag.
- Never put the forward-facing child restraint
up against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
-Always move the passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat's fore and aft
adjustment range, as fa r away from the air­
bag as possib le befo re installing the for­
wa rd- facing child restra int. The bac krest
must be adjusted to an up right posit ion.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on.
A WARNING
To red uce the risk of serious in jury, make s ure
t hat the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light w ill
be displayed wheneve r a child restraint is in­
stalled on t he front passenger seat and t he
ign ition is switched on.
Airb ag sys tem
-If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not stay on, perform the checks described
¢ page 148, Monitoring the Advanced Air­
bag System .
-Take the child restra int off the front passen­
ger seat and install it prope rly at one of the
rear seat positions if the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light does no t stay on.
- Have the airbag system inspected by your
author ized Audi dealer immed iately .
- Always carefully follow instructions from
child restraint manufacture rs when instal ­
ling child restra ints .
A WARNING
-If, in exceptional c ircumstances, you must in-
stall a forward or rearward-facing child re­
stra int on t he fron t passenger 's seat:
- Imp roper installat ion of child res traints can
reduce the ir effectiveness or even prevent
them from provi ding any pro te ct ion.
- An imprope rly installed child restra int can
interfere wi th the airbag as it deploys and
serio usly injure or even kil l the c hild -eve n
with an Advanced A irb ag Sys tem.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instr uctions provided wi th the child sa fe ty

- Never p lace add ition al it ems on the se at
that can increase the total weight registered
by the weight -sensing mat and can cause in ­
jury in a crash .

Airbag syste m
-a small adu lt or teenager is on the front pas ­
senger seat
- a passenger who is not sitting upright with
their back against a non -reclined backrest with
their feet on the vehicle floor in front of the
seat is on the front passenger seat.
I f the front passenger airbag dep loys, the Feder ­
al Standard requires the airbag to meet the "low
risk" deployment criteria to help reduce the risk
of injury through interaction with the airbag.
"Low risk" deployment occurs in those crashes
that take place at lower decelerations as def ined
in the electronic control unit.¢

Alway s remember: Even though your vehicle is
equ ipped w ith Advanced Airbags, the safest place
for children is properly restrained on the back
seat . Please be sure to read the important infor­
mat ion in the sections that follow and be sure to
heed a ll of the WARN INGS.
A WARNING
To red uce the risk of inj ury when an ai rbag in­
fla tes, a lways wear safety bel ts p roperly.
- If you are unrestrained, leaning fo rwa rd, s it­
t ing s ideways or o ut of pos ition in any way,
yo ur risk of in jury is much h igher .
- Yo u will also re ceive serious injur ies and
could even be killed if you are up aga inst the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag
¢page 138.
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing chi ld safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat wi ll be
ser iously injured and can be killed if the front
airbag inflates - even w ith an Advanced Airbag
System.
- Although the Advanced A irbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off the front
airbag when a rearward-facing child re­
straint has been installed on the front pas­
senger seat, nobody can absolutely g uaran­
tee that deployment is impossible in all con­
ceivable s ituations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle .
- The inflating a irbag w il l hit the child safety
seat or infant c arrier with great force and

w ill smash the child safety seat and child
aga inst the back rest, center armrest, door,
or roof.
- Always install rearward-facing child re­
straints in the back seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rea r-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating posi tion and have the ai rbag system
inspected by your au thori zed Au di dealer.
A WARNING
If, in exceptional ci rcums tances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing child res traint on the
front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-fa cing sea t

Advanced Airbag System components
The fro nt passenge r seat i n your veh icle has a lot
of ve ry important parts of the Advanced A irbag
System i n it. These parts incl ude t he weight­
sens ing mat, senso rs, wir ing, bracke ts, and
more . The f unction o f the system in the front
passenger seat is checked by the electro nic con­
tro l unit when the ignition is on . The control unit
monitors the Advanced Airbag System and turns
the airbag ind icator light on when a malfunction
i n the system components is detected. The func-
tion of the a irbag ind icator light is described in .,_
