In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a la ne change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faster a veh icle approaches ,
the soo ner the d isplay in the exterior mirror w il l
turn on.
@ Vehicles tra veling with you
Veh icles traveling with you are ind icated in the
exterior m irror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All ve hicl es detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at th e latest .
@ Vehicle s left behind
If you slow ly pass a vehicle that s ide assist has
de tected (the diffe rence in speed between the
vehicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph or
15 km/h), the display in the exterior mirror turns
on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
The display w ill not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side ass ist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph or 15 km/h).
Functional limitation s
The radar sensors are designed to detect the lef t
and rig ht adjacent lanes whe n the road lanes are
the normal width . In certa in situations, the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
t hough there is no vehicle located in the area
that is crit ica l for a lane change. For example :
- if the lanes a re narrow o r if your are driving on
the edge of your lane . If this is the case, the
system may have detect ed the vehicle in anoth­
e r lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- if yo u are driving through a curve. Side assist
may r eact to a vehicle that is on e lane over
from the ad jacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or disp laced guard rai ls) .
- In poor weather condit ions. The side assist
functions are limited .
Do no t cover the radar sensors ¢

stickers, deposits, bicycl e wheels or other ob­
jects, because this wi ll affect the function. Do not
u se side assist when towing a trailer . For infor­

replace a driver's attention . The driver alone
is always responsib le for lane changes and

Improper reliance on the side assist system
can cause collisions and serious personal in­
jury:
- Never rely only on side assist when chang­
ing lanes.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is safe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles under
all conditions -danger of accident!
- Please note that side assist indicates there
are approaching vehicles, or vehicles in your
blind spot, only after your vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at least 19 mph
(30 km/h).
- In certain situations, the system may not
function or its function may be limited. For
example:
- if vehicles are approaching or being left
behind very quickly. The display may not
turn on in time.
- in poor weather conditions such as heavy
rain, snow or heavy mist.
- on very wide lanes, in tight curves or if
there is a rise in the road surface. Vehicles
in the adjacent lane may not be detected
because they are outside of the sensor
range.
(D Note
The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system. Have
your authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility check their function.

-If the window glass in the driver's door or
front passenger's door has been tinted , the
display in the exterior mirror may be misin­
terpreted.

Adjusting the display brightness

The signal brightness can be set in the radio or
MM!*.

The display brightness adjusts automatically to
the brightness of the surroundings, both in the
information and in the warning stage. In very
dark or very bright surroundings, the display is
already set to the minimum or maximum level by
the automatic adjustment. In such cases, you
may notice no change when adjusting the bright­
ness, or the change may only be noticeable once
the surroundings change .
Adjust the brightness to a level where the display
in the information stage will not disrupt your
view forward. If you change the brightness, the
display in the exterior mirror will briefly show the
brightness level in the information stage . The
brightness of the warning stage is linked to the
brightness in the information stage and is adjust­
ed along with the information stage adjustment . ..,.

Drive select provides the possibility to experience
d iff erent types of vehicle settings in one veh icle.
F or instance, using the three
Comfort, Auto and
Dynamic modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a comfortab le driving mode with the
press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with MM I*, the vehicle
setup for
Individual* mode can be customized by
you. This makes it possible to combine settings
such as a sporty engine tuning with comfortable
steering.
A WARNING
-
Improper use of the drive select can cause
collisions, other accidents and serious person­
al injury.
Description
App lies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
veh icle's features . However, the engine, auto­
matic transmission and steering are always in­
volved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and the au ­
tomatic transm ission respond quicker or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements . In the sporty dynam ic mode, the au­
tomatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs .
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios . Indirect steer ing that moves
eas ily, like the steering in comfort mode, is best
suited to long drives on a highway. In contrast,
dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steering.
The follow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steering*: the steering rat io changes based on
vehicle speed in order to ma inta in optim um
steering effort for the driver at all times. This

sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle con­
tro l. At reduced speeds, however, steering is
more direct in order to keep the steering effort as
minimal as possible when the driver is maneuver­
ing the vehicle. At low and average speeds, dy ­
nam ic steering additionally prov ides more re­
sponsive steering performance .
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­ ing and acceleration operations by the driver,
road surface, driving speed, and load . This makes
it possible to adapt damping to the driving situa­
t ion virtua lly in real time. Drive select also makes
it possible to sat isfy the desire for sporty suspen­
sion (Dynamic) and comfortable suspension
(Comfort) without giving up balanced tuning (Au­
to).
Engine sound*
T he sound of the eng ine is adapted to the select ­
ed mode and ranges from subtle to spo rty.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control also
responds to the driv ing behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner.

- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto and
Dynamic modes.
- Selecting the
Dynamic mode results in spo r­
ty shift ing characteristics. The S gear posi­
tion engages automatically.
- In vehicles that have dynamic steering*, op­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­
ping the engine . This does not indicate a
prob lem.

Dynamic · gives the driver a sporty driving feel
and is suited to a sporty driving style.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you again st
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin­
tentionally .

The selector lever lock is released as follows :

press and hold the release button on the side of
the gear selector knob

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po si­
tions when the ignit ion is turned on . You must
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position. As a reminder to the
driver , the following warn ing appears in the in­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
The Automatic Shift Lock only functions when the
vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h) .
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the Auto ·
matic Shift Lock is automatically deact ivated in
the N pos it ion .
A time delay element preven ts the selec tor lever
from locking when it is moved through the N po ­
sition (going from R to D/S). The locking element
will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N .,..

Release button
The release button on the se lec to r lever preven ts
the lever from being accidentally sh ifted into cer­
tain posit ions . Press ing t his but ton deactivates
the selector lever lock . Depending on the direc­
tion of the shift, the selector lever locks at differ ­
ent positions. The positions are high lighted in
the illustrat ion ¢

Ignition key safety int erlock
The key cannot be removed from the igni tion un ­
less the selector lever is in the P park pos ition .
When the ignition key is removed, the selector lever will be locked in the P pos ition.

Starting the engine
~ The selector lever must be in P or N.
Starting off
~ Press and hold the brake pedal.
~ Press and hold the release button in the selec­
tor lever handle, se lect the des ired selector lev­
er posit ion such as D/S and release the button.
~ Wait briefly until the transmission has shifted
(you w ill feel a slight movement) .
~ Remove your foot from the brake pedal and ac­
cele rate .
Stopp ing temporarily
~ Keep the veh icle stationary us ing the braking
pedal, for example at traffic lights .

~ Do not press the acce lerato r pedal when doing
this.
~ To prevent the veh icle from ro lling when you
start driving, set the parking brake when stop­
ping on steep incl ines¢ &_.
The parking brake wi ll re lease automatically and
the ve hicle w ill start moving once you press the
acce lerator pedal.
Stopping /par king
If the se lector lever is not in the P position whe n
you open the driver's door, the vehicle cou ld roll.

tened.
Under certain circumstances, such as driving in
the mounta ins, it may be useful to switch tempo ­
rarily to the manual sh ift program in order to ad­
j ust the gears to the dr iv ing cond it ions by hand
¢ page 126.
On slopes, activate the parking b rake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too m uch stress from being placed
on the locking mechanism.
