Driving
_& WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed. You must use
more force to turn or brake if. Because you
cannot steer and brake as you usually
would, this could lead to accidents and seri­
ous injuries.
- Please note that the brake booster and pow­
er steering only work when the engine is
running. When the engine off, you must use
more force to steer or brake the vehicle. Be­
cause the usual steering and brak.ing capa­
bility is not available, the risk of accidents or
injuries increases .
- Always take the vehicle key with you when
leaving the vehicle, even for a short period
of time. This applies particularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle . Otherwise the
children could start the engine or operate
electrical equipment such as power win­
dows.
- For safety reasons, always park the vehicle
with the selector lever in the P position.
Otherwise, there is the risk that the vehicle
could roll.
- After the engine has been switched off, the
radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10
minutes -even with the ignition switched
off. It can also switch on again after some
time if the coolant temperature rises as the result of heat buildup or if the engine com­
partment is heated by the sun's rays and the
engine is hot.
(D Note
If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended period of time, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine is
switched off- there is a risk of damaging the
engine. For this reason, let the engine run for
at idle for approximately two minutes before
shutting it off.

Starting the engine if there is a
malfunction
Applies to vehicles: with convenience key
It may not be possible to start the engine under
certain circumstances, for example if the battery
in the vehicle key is drained, if interference is af­
fected the key or if there is a system malfunc­
tion.

key inside the vehicle or if the system does not
recognize the key. The conven ience key may not
be recognized, for example, if it is covered by an
object that
disrupts the signal (such as a brief­
case), o r if the key battery is weak. Electronic de­
vices such as cell phones can also interfere with
the signal.
To still be able to start or stop the engine, refer
to "Cor rect ing a malfunction" ¢
page 84.
Ill Key not in vehicle?
The Ill indicator light turns on and this message
appears if the convenience key was removed from
the vehicle when the eng ine was running . If the
conven ience key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch the ignition on o r start the engine
once yo u stop it. In addition, you cannot lock the
ve hicl e from the outside .
Press brake pedal
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal when starting the eng ine .
Please engage N or P
This message appears when starting or s topping
the engine if the selector lever is not in the Nor P
position . The engine will not start/stop .
Driving
Shift to P, vehicle can roll away . Doors can only
be locked in P
T his message appears for safety reasons along
with a warning tone. It appears if the selec to r
lever for the automat ic transmission is not in the
P position when switching the ignition off with
the
I START ENGINE STOPI * button. Shift these­
lector lever to the P position. Otherwise, the vehi­
cle could roll. You also cannot lock the vehicle us­
ing the locking sensor o n the door hand le or us ­
ing the conven ience key.
Electromechanical
parking brake
Operating
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Introduction
A pp lies to veh icles: w ith plug -in hybrid drive
General information
The plug- in hybrid drive is a drive concept that al­
lows yo u to choose between driving w ith the elec­
tr ic moto r, with the gaso lin e engine o r using a
comb inat io n of both.
All work done on the high-voltage system must
only be performed by certified high-voltage tech­ n icians at autho rized Aud i dea le rs or authorized
Aud i Serv ice Facilities in accordance with Audi
gu idelines.
The high-voltage system is composed of the fol­ low ing h igh-vo ltage components: the high-volt­
age battery, the powe r electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high-voltage A/C compressor, the
high-vo ltage heater, the charging system and
charging port as well as the orange high-voltage
wiring.
The pedal referred to in this sect ion of the Own­
er's Manua l is the equivalent of the acce lerator
pedal (gas pedal) in a standard veh icle.
High-voltage battery
The high-voltage battery is located under the
rear bench seat in the veh icle and does not re­
qu ire any maintenance from the driver. Addition ­
a l information about the high-voltage battery can
be found under
Q page 112 .
A WARNING
The voltage in the high-vo ltage system is life­
threatening. Touching a damaged high-volt­
age component can result in a fatal e lectr ic
shock. The components in the high-voltage
system are ma rked with a warning label which
wa rns against the h igh-vo ltage.
- The voltage level in the high-voltage system
is still dangerous and potentially life-threat­
ening when the ignition is switched off.
- Never perform work on orange high-voltage
cables or on high-voltage components. Only

authorized repair facilities that are certified
may perform work on the high-voltage sys­
tem.
- Never damage, alter or remove the orange
high-voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high-voltage system.
- Never perform any work using c utting, shap­
ing or sharp-edged too ls or heat sources
near the h igh-vo ltage system and high-volt­
age cables.
- Aud i regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high-voltage sys­
tem and h igh-vo ltage components.
- When working on the h igh-vo ltage system
and h igh-voltage compone nts, make sure
the remote cont rol key is kept far enough
away from the vehicle so that there is no
ris k of the ignit ion be ing inadve rten tly
sw itched on.
- Gases that escape from the high-vol tage
b attery can be poisono us or flammable.
- Damage to the high-voltage battery could
cause the h igh-vo ltage battery to leak im­
media tely or in the fu ture, and poisonous or
flammab le gases cou ld escape . Do not in ­
ha le the gases!
- Do not expose yourse lf to any leaking fluids
and do not come into contact with them .
- The high-volt age battery e lectroly te fl uid is
caustic. I f electrolyte fluid comes into con ­
tact with the sk in, f lush the affected area
for at least 15 minutes with clean water.
Then wash the affected area with soap.
Have the affected area examined by a med i­
cal professional.
- In the event of a technical emergency, in­
form the responders that the vehicle is
equ ipped with a high-voltage battery.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended when in
drive ready mode

gaged . The veh icle can start moving ("creep­
ing") even if the gaso line engine is switched
off, since the e lectr ic motor is still operating.

If the B indicator light turns on, the high-volt­
age battery is charging or is already completely
charged.
I f the . indicator light stays on, there is a mal­
function in the charging system. Have the prob­ l em corrected immediately by an authorized Audi
dea ler or authorized Audi Service Facility.

Vehicle charging

Applies to vehicles: with plug -in hybrid drive
There could be a malfunction if you are not able
to pull the vehicle charging connector out of the
vehicle charging port. You must use the emer­
gency release to release the vehicle charging con­
nector.
Requirement: the se lector lever must be in the P
position, the vehicle must be unlocked and the
charging process must have been ended or inter­
rupted.

A WARNING
Do not be misled by the status report displays
by ignor ing messages and/or illuminated
warning and indicator lights in the vehicle.
This could lead to break downs in on the road,
accidents and serious injuries.
@ Tips
- If the high-voltage battery is not charged,
the amount of access requests is limited to
15 after switching off the ignition. This
helps conserve the 12 volt vehicle battery.
You cannot control functions or access in­
formation if the charge level of the 12 volt
vehicle battery is too low.
- If at least two minutes have passed after
the last time the ign ition was switched off,
you can reset the access counter back to "0"
as needed after switching the ignition on/
off again .
Vehicle position
Applies to vehicles: with plug -in hybrid drive
The vehicle collects data under certa in conditions
and sends it to a server.
When data is stored, you can data such as the ex­
amples listed below using the Audi connect e­
tron services:
- Vehicle location display
e-tron
-Display of one's own location
- Route to your vehicle
If your mob ile dev ice also has a navigation func­
tion, you can nav igate to your last known parking
location .
For example, you have the option to show the
route to your vehicle and to send the correspond­
i ng locations.
(D Tips
- The new parking locat ion cannot be deter­
m ined with this service if the vehicle is
moved after shutting the vehicle off and
w ithout switching the ignition on and off
again, for example when being towed or if
the vehicle is stolen .

park position is transmitted to the

ter removing the key.
Charging
Applies to vehicles: with plug- in hybrid drive
You can contro l and access the high-voltage bat­
tery ch arging process remotely using these
serv­
ices. You have the following options:
- check the battery charge level,
- start/end the charging process,
- program the charging t imer with/without cl i-
mate control,
- deactivate/activate the charging timer.

A WARNING
Only perform charging functions on the high­
voltage battery if the vehicle is shut off cor­
rectly, is connected to a suitable socket and if
the ignition is switched off.

Intelligent Technology
- The braking ability of your vehicle is limited
to the traction of the wheels. In this way, it
is not different from a two whee l dr ive vehi­
cle . Do not be tempted to accelerate to a
high speed when the road is slippe ry th is in­
c reases the risk of an acc ident .
- Note that on wet streets, the front wheels can "hyd roplane" if d riving at s peeds that
are too hig h. Unlike front whee l drive
vehicles , the eng ine does no t rev highe r su d­
denly when the vehicle begins hyd ro planing.
For this reason, pay attention to the road
co ndit ions regar dless of your speed.
Energy management
The starting ability is optimized
The energy management system manages the
electrical energy distribution and optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the
engine .
When a ve hicle w ith a conventional energy sys­
tem is not driven for a long time, the battery is
d rained by equ ipment (for example the immobi l­
i z e r) . In certain circumsta nces, there could may
not be eno ugh en ergy to start the engine.
Your ve hicle is equipped with a n intellige nt ener­
gy management system for d istr ibut ing electric i­
ty . This s ignifica ntly imp roves the starting ability
and increas es the battery life.
The energy management system Is made up of
battery diagnosis , idling current management
and dynamic energy management .
Battery diagnosis
The battery diagnosis determines the battery
charge level. The sensors dete rm ine the battery
voltage, the battery cur rent, and t he battery
temperature . The c urrent charge level and the
pe rformance of the bat tery are dete rm ined based
on this.
Idling current management
The idling current management decreases the
energy used w hile parked . With the eng ine
sw itched off, i t manages the energy dist ribution

to the different e lectr ica l components. Date from
batte ry diagnosis is taken into account for this.
De pend ing o n the bat tery charge leve l, elect ric al
equipmen t is switched o ff one item a fter the o th­
er, to prevent the bat tery from drai ning and to
retain the start ing ability .
Dynamic energy management
While driv ing , dynam ic energy manageme nt dis ­
tribu tes the ap propr iate amo unt of energy to t he
electr ical eq uipment. It contro ls the battery
charge level so that more energy is no t used then
i s being generated in order to maintain an opti­
mal batte ry charge level.

- Ener gy management cannot overcome the
laws of p hysics . Note that the charge leve l
and length of the battery life are limited.
- When the sta rting ability is en dangered, the

What you should know
Maintaining the s tarting ability is the highest
priority.
A lo t of st ress is placed on the b attery when dr iv­
i ng sho rt d istances, in t raff ic, and a t cold times
of the year . A lot of energy is used but litt le is
generated. It is also critical whe n the engine is
not running but e lectr ica l equipment is sw itched
on. In th is case, energy is used but none is gener­
ated.
In sit uat ions like th is, ene rgy management w ill
active ly regulated the distrib ution of energy.
Long periods without use
I f you do no t drive yo ur vehicle fo r sever al days o r
weeks, e le ctrica l equ ipment is g radua lly sca le d
back or switched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures th e vehicle will be ab le to start a fter long
per iods of time . Some conven ience f unctions
such as opening w ith the remote control key may
not be available . These convenience functions
will be ava ilable again o nce you swi tch the ig ni-
tion on and sta rt the eng ine. .,..

A WARNING
- Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored
only in the closed original container out of
the reach of chi ldren!
- Brake failure can resu lt from old or inappro­
priate brake fluid. Observe these precau­
t ions:
- Use only brake flu id that meets SA E speci­
fication
J 1703 and conforms to Federal
Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always check
with your authorized Audi dealer to make
sure you are using the correct brake fluid.
The correct type of brake fluid is also indi­
cated on the brake flu id reservoir.
- The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use of
the brakes can cause a vapor lock if the
brake fluid is left in the system too long.
This can ser iously affect the efficiency of
the brakes as well as your safety. This
could result in an acc ident.
(D Note
Brake fluid w ill damage the pa int of your vehi­
cle.
For the sake of the environment
Because of the prob lem of proper disposal of
brake flu id as well as the special tools re­
quired and the necessary expertise, we rec­
ommend that you have the brake fluid
changed by your author ized Audi dealer.
Battery
General information
All work on the battery requires expert knowl­
edge.

Ch eck ing and Filling
Plug -in hybrid drive* : you can find important in ­
formation about the high -vo ltage battery under
¢ page 98.
The battery in yo ur Audi does not need any ma in­
tenance under
normal operating conditions . Audi
recommends having the electrolyte level check
by an authorized Audi dealer or author ized Audi
Service Facility when there are
high outside tem­
peratures or when dr iving all day. The e lectrolyte
level should also be checked each time the bat ­
tery is charged¢
page 249.
Have the battery checked when you bring your ve­
hicle in for an inspection. It is a good idea to re­
place the battery if it is more than 5 years old.

Di sco nnecting the battery te rminal s
The battery should not be disconnected. Several
vehicle functions (power windows, for example)
will be lost when the battery is disconnected. The
funct ions must be reprogrammed after connect­
ing the battery. To avoid this, the battery should
only be disconnected from the vehicle electrical
system when it is absolutely necessary.
