EAU15598
Inspect your vehicle each time you use it to make sure the vehicle is in safe operating condition. Always follow the inspection
and maintenance procedures and schedules described in the Owner’s Manual.
WARNING
EWA11152
Failure to inspect or maintain the vehicle properly increases the possibility of an acci dent or equipment damag e.
Do not operate the vehicle if you fin d any pro blem. If a pro blem cannot be corrected b y the proce dures provi ded in
this manual, have the vehicle inspecte d b y a Yamaha dealer. Before using this vehicle, check the following points:
ITEM CHECKS PAGE
Fuel • Check fuel level in fuel tank.
• Refuel if necessary.
• Check fuel line for leakage.
• Check fuel tank breather hose and overflow hose for obstructions, cracks or
damage, and check hose connections. 3-23, 3-24
En gine oil • Check oil level in engine.
• If necessary, add recommended oil to specified level.
• Check vehicle for oil leakage. 6-11
Final gear oil • Check vehicle for oil leakage. 6-14
Coolant • Check coolant level in reservoir.
• If necessary, add recommended coolant to specified level.
• Check cooling system for leakage. 6-16
Front brake • Check operation.
• If soft or spongy, have Yamaha dealer bleed hydraulic system.
• Check brake pads for wear.
• Replace if necessary.
• Check fluid level in reservoir.
• If necessary, add specified brake fluid to specified level.
• Check hydraulic system for leakage. 6-25, 6-25

7. Check the oil check bolt gasket
and the oil filler bolt gasket for
damage, and replace them if nec-
essary.
8. Refill with the recommended final gear oil until it flows out of the oil
check bolt hole.
9. Install the oil check bolt, the oil fill- er bolt and their gasket, and then
tighten the bolts to the specified
torques. 10. Install the final gear case breather
cap by installing the washer and
bolt, and then tighten the bolt to
the specified torque.
11. Check the final gear case for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, check for
the cause.
EAU20071
CoolantThe coolant level should be checked
before each ride. In addition, the cool-
ant must be changed at the intervals
specified in the periodic maintenance
and lubrication chart.
EAU46694
To check the coolant level1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face and hold it in an upright posi-
tion.TIPThe coolant level must be
checked on a cold engine since
the level varies with engine tem-
perature.
Make sure that the vehicle is posi-
tioned straight up when checking
the coolant level. A slight tilt to the
side can result in a false reading.2. Check the coolant level in the
coolant reservoir.TIPThe coolant should be between the
minimum and maximum level marks.

63. If the coolant is at or below theminimum level mark, remove the
coolant reservoir cap guard by re-
moving the bolt, and then remove
the reservoir cap. WARNING! Re-
move only the coolant reservoir
cap. Never attempt to remove
the ra diator cap when the en-
g ine is hot.
[EWA15162]
4. Add coolant to the maximum level
mark, and then install the reservoir
cap. NOTICE: If coolant is not
availa ble, use distille d water or
soft tap water instea d. Do not use har
d water or salt water
since it is harmful to the en gine.
If water has been used instead
of coolant, replace it with cool-
ant as soon as possi ble, other-
wise the coolin g system will not
b e protecte d a gainst frost an d
corrosion. If water has been
a dde d to the coolant, have a
Yamaha dealer check the anti-
freeze content of the coolant as
soon as possi ble, otherwise the
effectiveness of the coolant will
b e re duce d.
[ECA10473]
5. Install the coolant reservoir cap
guard by installing the bolt.
EAU46426
To chan ge the coolant
1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face and let the engine cool if nec-
essary.
2. Remove cowling A. (See page 6-8.) 3. Remove the right air intake duct
by removing the bolts.
4. Place a container under the en- gine to collect the used coolant.
5. Remove the radiator cap. WARNING! Never attempt to re-
move the ra diator cap when the
en gine is hot.

6. Remove the coolant reservoir cov-
er and coolant reservoir by remov-
ing the bolts. 7. Remove the coolant reservoir cap
guard by removing the bolt, and
then remove the reservoir cap.
8. Drain the coolant from the coolant reservoir by turning it upside
down.
9. Install the coolant reservoir cover and the coolant reservoir by plac-
ing them in their original position,
and then installing the bolts.
10. Remove the coolant drain screw and its O-ring to drain the cooling
system. 11. After the coolant is completely
drained, thoroughly flush the cool-
ing system with clean tap water.
12. Install the coolant drain screw and its new O-ring.
13. Hold the vehicle upright, and pour the specified amount of the rec-
ommended coolant into the radia-
tor and reservoir. NOTICE: Failing
to hol d the vehicle upri ght when
fillin g the ra diator with coolant
may cause air to be trappe d in

and then install the reservoir cap
guard by installing the bolt.
15. Install the radiator cap.
16. Start the engine, let it idle for sev- eral minutes, and then turn it off.
17. Remove the radiator cap to check the coolant level in the radiator. If
necessary, add sufficient coolant
until it reaches the top of the radi-
ator, and then install the radiator
cap.
18. Check the coolant level in the res- ervoir. If necessary, remove the
coolant reservoir cap guard and the cap, add coolant to the maxi-
mum level mark, and then install
the cap and the cap guard.
19. Start the engine, and then check the vehicle for coolant leakage. If
coolant is leaking, have a Yamaha
dealer check the cooling system.
20. Install the right air intake duct by installing the bolts.
21. Install the cowling.

WARNING
EWAT1041
Do not remove the ra diator cap when the en gine an d ra diator are hot. Scal din g hot flui d an d steam may be
b lown out un der pressure, which coul d cause serious injury. Be sure to wait until the en gine has coole d.
Place a thick ra g, like a towel, over the ra diator cap, an d then slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the
d etent to allow any resi dual pressure to escape. When the hissin g soun d has stoppe d, press d own on the cap
while turnin g it counterclockwise, an d then remove the cap.TIPIf coolant is not available, tap water can be temporarily used instead, provided that it is changed to the recommended cool-
ant as soon as possible.
Wait until the
engine has cooled.
Check the coolant level in the
reservoir and radiator.
The coolant level
is OK.The coolant level is low.
Check the cooling system
for leakage.
Have a Yamaha dealer checkand repair the cooling system.Add coolant. (See TIP.)
Start the engine. If the engine overheats again,
have a
Yamaha dealer check
and repair the cooling system.
